flash (macromedia):
I've got some videos encoded as .FLV files and for the most part seem to be
fine being served through my webhost that allows progressive file streaming.
We're getting a few people complaining about having to download and install
Flash 9 player but saying they have no problem viewing Youtube videos.
Should we be encoding in Flash 7 or 8 for awhile and holding off until Flash
9 is a bit more widespread?

Thanks. Oddly enough, just to be safe I was creating the .flv file with
Flash 8 settings and publishing in Flash 8 too. When I open the .fla files
they all show Player: 9 in the properties box.

What codec are you using to encode your videos? On2VP6 is the better (i.e.
smaller file size for same quality, or better quality for same file size),
newer, codec. If you are encoding to this rather than the Sorenson codec, it
requires >=FP 8 to run. Since the current FP version is 9, this would
necessitate downloading FP9 for any current user of <=FP7

I am using the "import video" function within Flash CS3. Should I be using
Sorenson to create the Flash videos instead of creating them directly in
Flash?

It's easy to become confused with this issue, as Sorenson publish software
(Squeeze) that is very good for creating FLVs from other video formats, and
they also wrote the earlier codec, 'Sorenson codec' that was used for all FP
version prior to 8. Now, using Sorenson Squeeze you can also compress to the
On2 VP6 codec - this is universally acknowledged as a better codec, but does
of course necessitate the end-user having FP 8 or above installed.

So, no, you don;t *have* to use Sorenson Squeeze, though I find it much
better than the encode software released with Flash 8. I haven't seen CS3
yet though.
