FLASH MX suddenly is crashing PCs

flash actionscript: I know that this is the ActionScript forum, but I thought that there may be
someone out there who has had this happen to them. At this point, I am trying
to trouble shoot this problem myself.

I teach FLASH MX in a PC Lab with 25 workstations. This incident had no
previous occurrence. Today, FLASH repeated froze the systems on 90% of the
workstations. We restarted, attempted the procedure again, and had repeated
results. This occurred with 2 different classes, meaning to over 40 students,
and on the teacher workstation.

This is what happened: I wanted to demonstrative a simple motion tween. Each
movie file, was independently created by the individual students, and saved
onto their individual hard drives. Students drew a shape in symbol edit mode,
and then attempted to drag an instance onto the stage, in a keyframe on a new
layer, in scene one. The movie clip was a simple drawing, and the entire movie
contained NO ActionScipt.

On the majority of the workstations FLASH froze the system after students
attempted to drag an instance of a movie clip symbol onto the stage. The PC
usage went up to 100 % when I checked the TASK manager under performance.

The System Administrator watched this incident occur, as it is easily
duplicated. We are current with our Windows XP updates. We have Service Pack
2 installed on our system. There are no viruses on the Network. There has not
been any additional software added to our network recently. It definitely is a
problem with the program.

I have been using this version of the software daily for several months now
and have not had this ever happen before.

HELP! Does anyone know what in FLASH MX is causing our PC?s to freeze? I want
to do more than the soft shoe tomorrow in class. Thanks

Have you tried updating flash? It may help.

I suggest testing one machine (that you know to be a troubled one) and try to
duplicate the problem. I could not. Did this happen after SP2 was installed,
out of curiosity?

We have FLASH MX 2004 Pro on order so it's just a matter of time before it
arrives and is loaded in the lab. Unfortunately, I was very successful at
duplicating the problem. :)

This happened some time after SP2 was downloaded. Last night, I noticed that
MS had some updates that it prompted me to install on my personal computer.
Maybe - this was was initiated the problem, earlier with the pcs in the lab.

Thanks for your reply. I'll follow that link today on my workstation and see
if it fixes things.

It is interesting to know that this event happened to another user on the same
day. Hmmmm . If your friend is experiencing the same situation as I am, then
he is having major problems with FLASH and will probably need to reinstall it.
I still dont know what my situation is, but need to have a good idea before I
proceed, as it involves 25 computers.

A Really good book for your friend to pick up is Macromedia Flash MX 2004
Beyond the Basics Hands-On Training http://www.peachpit.com/title/0321228537
There are many interesting tutorials in it. It is an intermediate level I
think.
