Masks in Flash can't be gradients. But I know what effect you mean.
The trick here is to position simple graphics over the top and bottom of
your scrolling area. These graphics each represent a gradient from one
color to the same color, with one of those being transparent (in fact, these
graphics can be two instances of the same symbol). If the color of these
graphics is the same as the background color for the scroll (or the movie,
or at least this section), it gives the appearance that the scroller itself
is fades to semi-transparency.

I'm trying to make a scroll area where the contents of the scroller gradualy
fade off the top and bottom as you scroll. I'm assuming if i add some sort of
gradient effect to the edges of the scroll content's mask this would do the
trick. Anyone done / seen this before?
