I'm not really sure how you've setup your Flash file since I dont have Flash 8
but generally when I have a menu where its possible that a menu item has an
"on" position I keep a state variable to keep track of the menu items. So if
you have 3 menu items like you do. Each menu item would have an open animation
followed by a stop, with a closing animation. When you click on an menu item it
would first play the closing animation on the current open menu item (if
nothing is currently open then nothing will happen) and then play the open
animation for the newly clicked animation. Once that has been done, assign the
state variable the new menu item. Hope that makes sense.

That sounds about what I want to do but I don't know where to start, I have the
idea but not the full knowledge
I made a mx2004 file for you to look at, and it would be so great if you could
do the variable example on my menu!! I would be ever grateful
