Is there any way of getting data out of a MySQL database than the old
way...using PHP to get the data, put it into a long string with separators and
then sent to Flash? Does Flash MX 2004 Pro have something new?

MX 2004 Pro has XML data connectors. Use a .php file to create an XML stream to
the XMLconnector and bind that to a dataset or component. Still not real easy
and I did not use previous versions of flash but it sounds easier than what you
described. At least no more complicated than using Dreamweaver to access MySQL
Data.
