macromedia flash flash remoting : Basic architectural question

Hello all,
I'm architecting my first RIA, and from what I've read on the macromedia web
site, there are 4 possible ways of handling data transfer between flash and the
server.
1)Flash remoting (requires a server licence, which is expensive, right?
Proprietary, so some lock-in concern, right?)
2)Simple http name-value pairs (for an example of this, see
http://www.smartwebby.com/Flash_and_ASP/default.asp )
3)xml over http
4)web services (described by a wsdl)

I'm trying to choose between these different approaches, and despite articles
on this exact topic (see
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/flash/articles/ria_dataservices.html
)
I'm stumped.
Why would I go for remoting? How is it better than just using regular xml? Xml
seems pretty well integrated into FlashMX2004 Pro, and since integration with
the dev environment seems like it was the selling point of remoting, is there
any reason for me to consider it now?

Your thoughts, options, and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

From that article I linked to. It really doesn't sound very positive (though it
tries to put the best spin on it)

First off, many people took Macromedia's emphasis on web services as a herald
of Flash Remoting's early demise. Though this was never intended to be the
case, Macromedia's decision to roll out connectors for web services and XML in
Flash?and not provide a connector for Flash Remoting, which is still a
stand-alone product separate from Flash?was seen by many as an indication that
web services were the new kid on the block.

However, Macromedia did release updated components for Flash Remoting that
work with MX 2004 and Flash Player 7. Using these updated components, Flash
Remoting will work with MX 2004 and Flash Player 7, and you can migrate
projects to the new tools. These components are ActionScript components, not
ActionScript 2.0, and there still isn't a Remoting connector component to go
along with the WebServiceConnector and XMLConnector components. So, Macromedia
has some work to do in the future to build out Remoting support to bring it to
the level of support they're providing for web services and XML. However, the
good news is that Macromedia has said they are working on such a project,
though they haven't provided a specific release date.

Hi,
I am having the same issue as You. I am planning to build a RIA and a Cold
Fusion site at the same time. I have read and read all articles I have
found. Here is my conclusion. Write a bunch of CFCs, generate XML for
different languages, write Flash classes with Remoting 1.0 and then wait for
version 2.0 and maybe the Connection Components 2.0
