Is there some reason why using session variables in a CFC web service would
dramatically slow down remoting performance in a secure production
environment (but not in an insecure development environment)?

FYI, I've since discovered that it is not the session variable setting (or
the lock which contains it) but the <CFAPPLICATION> tag itself (included in
the CFC so as to gain access to the user session) which causes the remote
call to fail (leaving no errors behind; except that the responder function
in the SWF never responds).

Also, this hanging only occurs on the first call. Subsequent calls work.
