I was wondering if it's possible to use flashcom as a venue for people to do
interactive gaming like a hangman or boggle word type game, or any game,
maybe a mahjong turnbased game or backgammon.

Any thoughts are appreciated

Try my big interactive mutil-user chess game at

where FlashCom and its Share Objects as well as PHP/MySQL are used.

lets say i wanted to have flash record your _x and _y, send it to a server and
the server sneds it out to everyone else connect, thereby showing where you are
exactly on their screen. how could you send it from your flash document and
then recieve everyone elses info from the server?

Check out the shared ball app or cursor component that come with Flashcom, they
implement that kind of functionality.

Also I have built an app that incorporates x and y coordinate sharing on a
large scale:

Download the trial server from Macromedia. In that download will be tons of
documentation and example files. You can set this up on a development server to
test and develop on. I have mine running on my 2ghz P4 Windows XP laptop. A
good book to read is Robert Reinhardt's 'Building Rich Internet Applications'.
Again, tons of examples on a CD. The kind of thing you're talking about is
done with remote sharedObjects. They rock. You can do tons of real time data
sharing with them. They are really robust. To publish to the web you're going
to need a FlashCom hosting account. You can get that from Media Temple or
Influxis pretty cheap (depending on # of simultaneous users and bandwidth).
Hope that helps.

I second that, Robert's book is great but now there's a better one ;-)
