Hello FDezzy,
First, I think that your shared web host will not give you permission to
install a version of Flash Com in the server. Maybe I had misunderstood,
but if it is a contracted hosting, they don't give permissions to
install any software on their machines. Could exist an exception, but I
don't know one.
You can install a Developer version of the Flash Com freely on the
development machines, so you can run the samples in this machine. (Could
be Linux or Windows).
You will only need to purchase a version of FCS when you'll go to deploy
your server that have a FCS installed, in other words, the license is
required only when your server goes to ambient production (if it will be
used in an Intranet, you will need a license too).
To be sure about this aspects, visit the website
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashcom/ and read about the ways to
license.
I hope it helps.

Hello...newbie here...
I would like to implement the
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/flashcom/articles/first_comm_app.html application on a Redhat/Unix-based shared webhost server for my website. I
would like to try Flash MX and Flash Comm Server before purchasing. Both
tutorials require that I have Flash Communication Server MX.
Questions:
1. I'm pretty sure I need Unix version of Flash Comm Server installed on my
webhost server in order for the application to work on my website (or am I
mistaken?). However, would I also need the Windows version for my Windows
computer to test the application? The tutorials for both applications appear
to require that I have Flash Comm installed on my computer as well.
2. If I purchase Flash Comm Server, would I have to purchase two
versions...one for Unix webhost server, one for my Windows computer?
3. Are there any problems with installing Flash Comm Server on my shared
webhost account.
Thank you,
FDezzy
