we've got a little fcs app here that utilises Microphone.get(); for some of
us, that command gets the mike. for others it doesn't. the basic Microsoft
Sound Recorder app in programs > accesssories > entertainment works for
everyone here.

The problem here was caused by a modem. The Flash Player was using the first
microphone it found. In this case that was the modem microphone, which wasn't
obvious it was being selected until I looked at the 'settings' on the flash
player by right clicking the swf. You are able to choose between either the
modem microphone input and the sound card microphone input. If you do not have
a PCI modem with external modem and speaker option (in order to use it like a
telephone) this won't be a problem. The default microphone (sound card input)
is chosen for you.
