macromedia flash flashcom : video camera compatibility

Greetings all,

I have been dealing with the inconsistent complexities of connecting a video
camera to an application that uses Flash Communication Server. (We have not
upgraded to Flash Media Server yet; hopefully in next year's budget). I found,
after several hours of guesswork and fishing around, that Flash does not like
all video drivers. And I stumbled, quite accidentally, onto a camera
compatibility page that lists webcams (this page is found at
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_16453) that are
compatible with Flash Media Server. Sadly, the implication is that Flash Media
Server (and by extension, Breeze) is not designed for higher-end camcorders.

My goal has been to connect a camcorder-- not a webcam-- to a Breeze meeting.
The reason this question is here instead of the Breeze Meeting forum is because
I believe the Flash Media Server issue is an underlying one.

(Now why would I want to do this? Consider that a moot point. I have been
tasked by educators to figure it out for their own fell purposes).

In my discussions with other video professionals, I have been referred to a
fascinating entry in the Wikipedia about Firewire
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire). I interpret this article to mean
something like this: If the computer has firewire, and the camera has
firewire, you can connect the two without having to purchase 3rd party video
capture solutions.

My question: Will Flash Media Server "see" the above-described video
connection in a live video application?

Thanks in advance,

So you know, it's not an FCS/FMS issue, but rather a Flashplayer issue.

If the flashplayer recognizes the driver for the device, it will show up in
the cam selection list. For example, the driver for my el-cheapo Hauppage WinTV
card is recognized, and any video source I connect to the card can be used as a
cam in FCS. That might be your solution for connection the camcorder.

As far as devices that don't have installed drivers (such as your firewire
camera), perhaps the software for the camera will include a driver the
flashplayer recognizes. I guess the only way to know is to install the driver
and try it out.
