macromedia flash sitedesign : Permanent mask with varying opacity

Hello.

Here is the situation: I have a horizontal bar on which several images
keep alternating, four at a time, each occupying 25% of the bar's total
width, as represented on the following scheme:

+---------------------------------------------------------------+
| (a) | (b) | (c) | (d) |
| | | | |
| | | | |
+---------------------------------------------------------------+

The issue is that I need to have a logo permanently visible on the left
side of the bar. To ensure readability, I will have to reduce the
opacity of the images which are under the logo. If the logo would fit
exactly in region (a), I would only need to change the correspondent
image's alpha and that would do it. However, the logo image advances a
bit into the (b) region, but not enough that it would be ok to also mess
with (b)'s alpha setting.

What I really needed is some kind of mask which would affect both
regions; (a) as a whole and a part of (b). As a matter of fact, it would
be great if that mask could have its opacity varying from left to right,
i.e., being totally opaque on the left, and becoming transparent as it
approached (b). Can that be done?

Thank you,

This can be accomplished with PNGs, if I understand your question right.
Flash does not support gradient masks. But you could certainly create a
graphic in Photoshop with a gradient transparency then save as PNG24 and
import.
