How to get gradients to stick to the lines in a d

macromedia flash sitedesign: I need some basic help and understanding of how to make a gradient fill that I
apply to a rectaangle stick to all the edges when I pull and shape the
rectangle into more of a polygon. I am trying to develop a lower menu
navigation bar similar to the one that is shown here.

I cannot get the hang of how the original designer made the upper shadow
effects right above the buttons. See how it is darker in the gradient right
above where the buttons are giving the illusion that the buttons are inset.
Does it have something to do with lock fills or using the brush tool over the
area? I am stumped and will admit it.

I cannot point to the original flash file as it is part of someone elses site
and they published it to that site. Is there a way I can grab it from thier
site so as to reproduce it for my own? Not to take thier work and use it at
face value of course. It could be produced in photoshop -sure and then
exported out for use in flash. I just need to figure out how that effect is
done? any ideas about how to proceed?
