There are two sothink tools that you need.. "swf decompiler" to get a real
good listing of everything and to be able to extract the pieces and "sothink
quicker" to get the layout of the file.. layers and tweens and where
movieclips are placed etc. I have to use both to make a fla. I can't
easily do it with just one or the other.

You will not have the same as the original fla because some things are
compressed down during the compile and can't be uncompressed again by the
decompiler.
It takes a lot of practice with the tools to make a fla from them. It's
often faster just to re-do the fla from scratch. It usually comes out
improved the 2nd time anyway.
good luck,

Has anybody had experience with decompiling SWF files and rebuilding them as
FLA? Are there any 'caveat emptors' one should be aware of before getting
in too deep?

Hi,

If you google 'gordon decompiler' you'll find an OS X version, this is the
only one I've used. I am aware of there being a number of PC versions out there.

I've not had much need for them to be honest.

Hope this helps.
