Hey Nate,

Lots of people try to do what you are doing.. they try to start
building websites as soon as they get Flash. It really doesn't work
that way. People don't realize how much of an endeavor that learning
Flash can be. It takes a lot of time and effort to be proficient with
it. You need to start with the basics by doing the tutorials that
come with the program. It's not something that you should skip over
because if you do you will get too frustrated with Flash and probably
not use it anymore. Once you are really familiar with all the Flash
basics like layers and keyframes and movieclips, etc, then start
downloading different examples of stuff similar to what you want to
make. Get the sourcecode from interesting sites and break it down so
that you understand how it's made. (use a decompiler like the one
from soThink.com but don't steal, just learn from the sites) In
addition to all that, it really helps to watch Flash training videos
from places like vtc.com and lynda.com. It's about $25 to $30 per
month and you can watch as many as you have time to download
(unlimited for all subjects) Tutorial books on Flash are helpful too.

Good luck and come home safe!

Why not give vtc.com or lynda.com a shot, like tralfaz suggested? I've
used Lynda.com's Online Learning Library myself, and it's pretty hard to
beat for the price. You get access to QuickTime video tutorials. It really
does feel like you have an expert sitting there with you, going through
things step by step.

Do you have any particular questions? There are dozens of very
knowledgeable people here and you're sure to find plenty of help ... but
what exactly do you need? When you say, "I cant get anythign to work," I
don't know where to even begin helping you.
