It's not easy with Flash because it won't allow gradients in masks. (unless Flash 8 has something, I don't know)

I've been trying to do this for quite some time and can't figure it out. I want
to create a wiping effect with a gradient as a mask (color > transparent). So
it looks smooth fading left to right or whatever. You get the picture,
hopefully :).

I know how to create a color > transparent gradient in flash, but it treats
the image as solid and not gradient. I've also tried importing a gradient as a
..PNG but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions, or am I going down a dead
end? Thanks in advance.

Sure, it's really simple. You create your mask with a black and white
gradient (black meaning the layer being masked will be completely visible,
white meaning completely invisible). Then you *must* assign the mask via
actionscript, or else the gradient will not work.

mc1.setMask(mc2);
