macromedia flash sitedesign:
Screen resolution is irrelevant. All that matters is browser viewport
size. Browser viewport sizes can be anything.

hi there,

i'm wondering if the majority of people out there no longer use the 800 x 600
screen resolution anymore. i used to have it years ago, but over the last few
years the standard monitor seems to be 1024 x 768. i know that we have to check
our designs to also accommodate the 800 x 600 viewer, but wondering how common
that is anymore? any thoughts? is it getting to be obsolete?

Hi dan, could you expand on browser viewport? I am not sure if I follow
your comment

I have always tried to target the site dimensions based on the target
audience's resolution I believe they will be using and adjusting it to
best fit the viewing area within the browser... but I can be missing out
on something important

I disagree. If you are looking to be able to display your site without it
scaling and without the user having to scroll, screen resolution is vital.
It defines the maximum 'browser viewport size'. The viewable browsing area
is of course important - this is generally *less* than the screen
resolution, to allow for toolbars etc.

Denise - w3schools have some stats on this:

Here are a couple of interesting articles discussing web design and screen
resolution:

I got all these links from Google - Google is your *friend* - use it! :)

hi peter, thanks very much for your feedback and links on the subject. i found
it to be very helpful and it confirmed the answer to my question. it is: 800 x
600 is not obsolete, but only about 17% of users are viewing the web at that
resolution. 1024 x 768 is by far the most popular at 60% of users. and the
remainder is made up of even larger sized monitors that many people may use for
work, etc. so...the moral to the story is that 800 x 600 still is a decent
percentage to make sure i accommodate with the designs.

thanks!

You're welcome. A lot also depends on your target audience - for instance,
in the UK, for the educational market, the majority of secondary schools
will run a minimum resolution of 1024x768, whilst the majority of primary
schools will still be 800x600...
