Matthew,

Just use a rectangular movie clip with the alpha set completely
transparent to use for your hit area. Then give each instance it's own
name so you can reference them in AS. If this isn't quite clear for
you, you might try running through the tutorial at http://
www.gotoandlearn.com/ Lee Brimelow gives a great walk through for
folks wanting a watch a see type demo. Lots of other great stuff there
as well. HTH

If each of those text objects are buttons, then just set a keyframe in
the "hit" frame of the button, then draw a filled rectangle around the
text. Now you have a larger hit area that includes the space between the
characters.

If each of those text objects is a movieClip, then add a layer and draw
a rectangle around the the text in this new layer. Make that rectangle a
movieClip. Set that clip's alpha to 0. This invisible rectangle will be
the hit area for that clip.

you to a different page or frame. can i set the actual text box and not the
actual letters (hard to click on) to be the clickable area? If you want to see
my site to see what i mean it is www.matthewglloyd.co.uk

i ran into this problem too when i was first learning how to do buttons. Rob
is saying the right thing, but i don't know if it makes much sense to you.

Start from scratch:

-Click the icon in your library to create a new symbol
-Type the text that you want for your button and apply the color etc...
-In the properties, choose STATIC TEXT
-Insert a key frame on OVER (while on this keyframe, adjust the colors etc..
to how you want it to be on rollover)
-Insert a keyframe on DOWN
-Insert a keyframe on HIT
-Create a new layer above layer 1 named "hit area"
-On this layer draw a rectangle over your text and make the alpha 0 in the
color mixer.
-"Remove Frame" on the HIT keyframe on layer 1 (it will now show a keyframe on
the hit area layer fir HIT but not one on layer 1. on layer 1 you will only
have the other 3 keyframes.)
-now you can test it out.
