Simple Question - Changing Button Text

Simple Question - Changing Button Text robertnzana

macromedia flash sitedesign: I want to create a simple menu. Each menu "button" is an arrow pointing to the
word. When a user hovers over the button the arrow/text changes from blue to
red text. I've created the first button and saved it as a symbol with no
problem.

Here's the issue: DUPLICATING the button several times to other "menu items".
When I start to change the text of the button it changes ALL instances of the
other buttons (which kind of makes sense because they are really the same
object I believe).

I want to be able to change the "button over" from let's say red to green
later on if I want to - having to change it on ONLY 1 place, even though there
may be 10 buttons. How should I go about doing this.

I hope my message is clear to you....

Sorry for the simple question.

You can either create several objects, or use the same object that gets its
text from a little script, that is different for every button (that`s how I
would do it, rather than populating the lib with lots of almost similar
objects).

Don`t apologize for asking simple things.
You should feel guilty thou if you don`t try first... ;-)

Thanks for your reply.

I was thinking for of like object oriented programming. There's no easy way
to have all the buttons based on the same "root" button. It would be great to
just change the behavior of 1 button and all "children" reflect this change.

If I have to use a "little script" are there any simple examples you can point
me to?

Thanks again!
