macromedia flash sitedesign : Flash website - subsections external or internal?

I'm building a photography website for a friend. First (in short) I'm debating
whether to do some of the site in external SWFs, or if there's a more efficient
way to just have it all in one SWF (and just have preloaders on larger
sections).

Details:
Homepage > Preloader; load 5 images externally (slideshow)

Portfolio (Debating loading this externally as a SWF)
Preloader
- 5 subsections to this (perhaps a preloader for each section)
- all images would load externally
- XML file for caption info

Published work (Also debating loading this externally as a SWF)
Preloader
Dynamic horizontal scroll (image loop) of projects

Bio
- general

Contact
- Form

I have general flash experience and will be getting some help from another
programmer from time to time, but I wanted to get a basis so that I don't
generate something that's too messy. I just remember having issues trying to
unLoadMovie SWF's when the user would go back or to another section. The
ultimate goal is, not to have the browser refresh on sections of the site (Like
HTML), but to have a smooth yet dynamic transition from one section to the next.

Hi

Personally I would have the Homepage within Flash and load all other content
using swf's.
Each area of the site can then be designed and updated in isolation, one major
bonus is the load-on-demand this gives you
so you dont have to preload everything only what the user requests.

Hope it helps

Thank you, that does make sense, I just remember encountering issues when I
wanted to unLoad the movie.

Question about the portfolio section. There will be 5 main categories to his
photography:
- Editorial
- Multimedia
- Adventure
- Fly Fishing
- Weddings

Should I make each of those it's own SWF?

Hi

I'd keep this as one, but make it dynamic as possible, people don't mind
waiting for interesting content - so keep your visitor engaged while your
content loads. There are literally thousands of tutorials for flash galleries,
I am sure there is one out there that can give you an idea of how to organise
your content.

Simplicity is key - a picture paints a thousand words, so let the content do
the talking.
