I want to download Flash, but every time I click on download I get a red x in
the upper left corner and no sign of how to continue the download of flash.
I'm use a PC, windows XP Pro, I've made changes to turn off popup blocking,
and lowered my internet settings to low, still nothing happens. I also get a
message saying ' You might have to click the gold bar at the top of the page to
allow the install' but there is no yellow bar.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? is there a way to get flash on a cd?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I also have the same problem for months and feel really angry about!
Maybe today, I found the problem: the expiration date is over.
If I look in the browser => Tool => Internet Options => content => publisher
=> approved publisher => macromedia ( expiration date: 18/06/2005 )
But how to do after??
I looked for the solution on the website for months but I begin to be very
angry not to find ANYTHING!
Please HELP!!!

I received this same message. I could not get this to change. So, I just went
to my internet accelerator preferences (Proxyconn with Earthlink) and unchecked
"kill pop ups and ad blocking" and "block animation and stop animated gifs".
This was the final piece to a very frustrating puzzle. The Flash Player 8
worked on the websites where I previously wasn't able to view their web pages.

I was having the same problem. I, too, was using Internet Explorer with XP Pro
Service Pack 2. However, I followed Timelord3's suggestion and downloaded the
Full Version Netscape 8 browser (http://www.netscape.com). When I opened and
installed the browser, it did automatically prompt for plug-ins. It showed
Macromedia Flash Player as a needed plug-in to be updated. It went through the
process and stated that the update was complete. However, when I went to a
site that uses FlashPlayer 8, it still wasn't working. So, I closed Netscape
and opened IE and it only worked after I disabled all pop up blocker or ad
blocking commands.

Also, I thought FlashPlayer 8 was not downloading from the Macromedia website;
however, if you look in your Macromed folder, you will probably find the icon.
It did download, but did not automatically install it. Howver, if you click on
the GetFlash icon, it will ask you if you want to install it. To get to the
GetFlash icon's folder...Start>My Computer>C:Hard
Drive>WINNT>system32>Macromed>Flash>GetFlash (double click on this icon) Hope
this helps...

Hum sorry what do you mean by 'animation blocking'?

I disabled all stuff that could block (firewall, pop-up, security level at
lowest) but I'm not sure my knowlegde is absolute :D
thx
PS: I suppose ad blocking it's: tools=> blocking pop-up?

I still can't download flash player.

I've installed and am using Netscape 8. Removed all versions of flash player.
Disabled ad blocking in Windows and checked untrusted publishers. Removed
Norton. Rebooted many times.

When at the Macromedia download page, I click download without Yahoo toolbar,
I get the tiny icon with the very tiny square, circle, and triangle enclosed.

When I try with the Yahoo toolbar also selected, I get the tiny icon with ust
a red "X" inside.

Is this a clue?

(I have no clue - have tried everything in this thread and everything at
Macromedia help, that I can find)

Unfortunately, it looks like this "club" is growing. Microsoft released a
critical update dated 10/1105 - Q896688. Since then, I can't access Windows
Update--I need Administrator Privileges (W98SE), and ANYTHING pertaining to
Flash or Shockwave displays as a big white empty box with a small box in the
upper left consisting of a red square, green circle, and blue triangle. I tried
restoring my Reg to pre-update date, per a Microsoft community forum
suggestion, but that didn't work. They claim the update corrupted the registry,
but some DLLs were updated as well -- they may be the culprit. I'm trying to
get someone at Microsoft to listen to me. Ho Hum. I have also tried ALL
Macromedia's fixes, from the Reg compatibility issued to both Flash and
Shockwave uninstalls & standalone installs.

I installed Flash 7. In the process, the obsolete ActiveX control for
swflash.inf was removed. I now am running Flash Player 8 with no problems.
The real culprit is Microsoft's critical update Q896688 and their new version
of Mshtml.dll - 6.00.2800.1522. Restoring the old Mshtml.dll - 6.00.2800.1106
solves ALL problems, including Windows Update.

I've just succeeded in doing this, after first getting the same error message,
which I think you get if you have only installed Flash and don't have the
installation disk in the drive.
First install "directshow9" which is part of Microsoft DirectX. If you go to
msdn and search for DirectX 9.c this includes it.
Next install QuickTime 6.5 or above. I think the only version you can get now
is 7 which forces you to install iTunes. Its actually the iTunes installer, but
its the only way to get QuickTime.
After that, the shortcut will let you past that error message screen and asks
for the location of
F:\FSCOMMAND\Macromedia Flash 8 Video Encoder.msi
where F: is your DVD drive. I think this .msi will install from anywhere you
put it. Its designed to be installed on a separate machine to where you install
Flash so that you can batch process video files while you're working on a Flash
project.
Then you might get an error message saying that Flash 8 Video Encoder needs
repairing... don't bother with that for some reason it then goes on to ask you
to "insert disk 1" which is an impossibility. Instead, remove Flash 8 Video
Encoder... then re-run its installation.

Finally, you're done and ready to use Video Encoder to convert your AVI, MOV,
MPG, or MP4 files into FLV Hurrah! Its intuitive to use, but give it time. You
won't be able to multi-task!

After that, you still need to create a new document in Flash8, import the FLV,
save it, and export it to SWF. Put the SWF and the FLV in the same relative
path and when you run the SWF in the free Flash player, you get a window that
controls the video.

NOTE: it does not convert from FLV back into MP4. For that you'd need to buy
one of the many 3rd party products quite cheaply available.
