macromedia players flash : Can't download flash player

For some unknown reason, my flash player stopped working. Anyway, now I try to
download it and nothing happens. I see a message that says "Important: you may
have to click the gold bar at top of browser"

I don't see a gold bar. There is nowhere else to click.

What is happening?

I was having the same problem. I, too, was using Internet Explorer with XP Pro
Service Pack 2. However, I followed Timelord3's suggestion and downloaded the
Full Version Netscape 8 browser (http://www.netscape.com). When I opened and
installed the browser, it did automatically prompt for plug-ins. It showed
Macromedia Flash Player as a needed plug-in to be updated. It went through the
process and stated that the update was complete. However, when I went to a site
that uses FlashPlayer 8, it still wasn't working. So, I closed Netscape and
opened IE and it only worked after I disabled all pop up blocker or ad blocking
commands.

Also, I thought FlashPlayer 8 was not downloading from the Macromedia website;
however, if you look in your Macromed folder, you will probably find the icon.
It did download, but did not automatically install it. Howver, if you click on
the GetFlash icon, it will ask you if you want to install it. To get to the
GetFlash icon's folder...Start>My Computer>C:Hard
Drive>WINNT>system32>Macromed>Flash>GetFlash (double click on this icon) Hope
this helps...

I was able to get FlashPlayer 8 to work in both Netscape 8 or Internet Explorer
6 after I disabled both ad blocking and animation blocking in my accelerator
program preference section.

I use an accelerator program called Proxyconn with Earthlink (dial-up).
Proxyconn works similar to AOL's and Earthlink's "surf 5X faster program".
Both AOL and Earthlink would have an area where you can choose your preferences
for whether or not ads or animation are blocked while surfing. This is where
you would want to disable these features in order for Flash Player to work.
Hope this helps...

Yes, I'm using xp. I haven't downloaded Netscape yet, I;m hoping that won't be
necessary!

I tried following veromax's instructions (Start>My Computer>C:Hard
Drive>WINNT>system32>Macromed>Flash>GetFlash) but after I click hard drive
(local disk) there is no WINNT folder. I tried Windows folder but it says
"files are hidden"

I've disable ad blockers - still no luck.

Windows keeps telling me to click on the yellow bar at the top of the browser
- there is no yellow bar !!!

Also when I try to organize favorites, I get a blank box with a simaler icon
to that of a non displaying flash file.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

I received the same "gold bar message" prior to downloading Netscape and
following the path I mentioned in an earlier posting. Also, I'm using XP Pro
(upgraded from W2000). So, you may have a slightly different configuration.
Try going to your hard drive and follow this path...
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

The Netscape download did seem to be an important step in the process. It
takes about 35 minutes to download using dial-up. Once you get Netscape to
update FlashPlayer plug-ins you can go back to using IE or whatever browser you
are currently using.

I don't have any suggestions for the problem you are having with organizing
your favorites.

For a minute, I thought this was going to work!

It asked me if wanted to install, I clicked yes, the green bar went across,
then I got "An error has occured......."

Now what?

The following TechNote takes you through the settings in Win XP SP 2 that
should help play Flash content once again:
