macromedia players flash : Is Flash 8 Player backwards compatible?

I created some swf files using Flash 8 and this works ok at home, as I have
Flash Player 8, but when I access the site from college (which uses Flash
Player 7) the swf file is there, but is invisible... this is in IE6. The
college version of Firefox (v8) can see the file no problems. Does this mean
Flash 8 swf files arent compatible with older versions of Flash player?
If I resave the files as an older version (any recommended?) will the files
display correctly?

The only flash I have are for the headers... but the site loks fine in IE6 but
is a bit wonky in Firefox (but thats another matter! But if anyone can help
with that, that would be cool. Its my first site btw)

Pretty obviously a file published for Flash player 8 is going to need at
least Flash Player 8

If you want it to work for earlier players, you can change publish settings
to publish for an earlier version of Flash Player .. but then you won't get
the new Flash player 8 features (like filters, better video codec etc)

NOTE: You should always publish for the minimum Flash player version you can
that supports the features and bug fixes you need. There is no advantage
publishing for a higher version (except for Flash 5 vs flash 6 -- as Flash 6
supports compressed SWF file).
