macromedia players flash: Hi

Is it possible to turn macromedia sound off so that i can surf without the
music being interrupted!
I have turned the 'Play Sounds In Web Pages' off in internet explorer but it
hasn't done it.
I have Flash8.ocx installed

Or is this software not really for users benefit?

Is Macromedia generally used for annoying adverts? If so i will remove it.

I allowed it to be installed when i went to a music website, but now all sorts
of sites make noise and i don't want them to!!
