Ever since I installed Flash Player 8, Internet Explorer is crashing. I uninstalled Flash and everything is fine, except for the popups asking me to install Flash Player 8 every 30 seconds or so. I found the old versions of Flash and have installed all the way back to Flash Player 5 and determined that version 5, 6, 7 and 8 all cause Internet Explorer to crash. Anyone have any idea why? I use Win98, IE6 and haven't had problems until now. The Error states that Internet Explorer must shut down and gives me the option to send a report and not.
I have had a similar problem on any version of XP that has service pack 2. Are you getting a popup complaining about the activeX plugin? If you click "advanced" in the error message you will get a list of the plugins installed for IE. Select the flash.ocx one and there should be an option to update it. This seems to have fixed the problem for me.
Same problem on all of the IBM Thinkpads in my school district. All of them have IE crash the moment Flash8 player is installed. Remove it and they're fine. Only seems to be affecting these particular machines, even after a clean install. Not sure what the issue is. Going to try an older version and see if it crashes as well. Any updates on this appreciated.
We have the same problem with flash (8.0.22.0 on XP SP2) crashing ie 6. The problem seems to affect all 1800 users in our intranet (We've got many support requests regarding this error. ) The crashes are irregular but usually 5 times / h when clicking around. on the site. Flash 7.x works fine though, but downgrading 1800 users ... We have been working for weeks with this issue and, sadly, the only fast solution for u,s is to remove the flash menus.
I've figured it out. If you notice on the Macromedia page to download the Macromedia Flash Player, it asks if you would like the Yahoo Toolbar. Make sure it's clicked. It will correct the problem of IE crashing when a Flash object tries to load on a page. I recently was cleaning my wife's Win98 machine of programs/stuff not needed and removed the yahoo toolbar. Next thing you know as soon as my wife tries to get on a site/web page with flash it crashes. After trying everything to repair the install of IE and also updating the runtime 6 files...i removed flash and did not accept the update and the pages loaded fine except for the flash links/advertising. I came across this page....so once I figured out the yahoo toolbar is somehow tied in with the Flash program, I thought I would let you know. Hope it works.:D
Dear Qwann, I suspect you may have hit the nail on the head. But I am not in a positon to test your theory now. If you are correct, then this represents a very serious breach of the U.S. anti-trust laws. and Adobe and whoever else is involved in this deception should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!
Actually no, but once i put yahoo toolbar back on...no more crashes via flash player. I troubleshooted it right to the yahoo toolbar. Anyone else it work for leave a post pls. I'm guessing they somehow have Flash Player looking for a file they assumed would be installed with yahoo toolbar. If someone does not install the yahoo toolbar though, it's missing. It may also be if you download them both at the same time originally, then uninstall Yahoo toolbar, it screws something up in Flash Player. Either way try it and let me know if it works. I noticed no one in the forums had a good fix for it, i think i do...test it out.:beer;
This is an excellent workaround, but not a fix. Macromedia say that the Yahoo search bar is NOT necessary to run Flash8, but this appears not to be true. The point is, I and my employer don't want the dreadful Yahoo toolbar messing up my IE6. If you have to download the Yahoo search bar in order to stop Flash8.ocx craching IE6 then Adobe/Macromedia should say so. They should also apologise to the IT community for so introducing such dreadful crippleware that has caused so much lost productive time. Please could a some other users who have the time, test Qwann's theory and let us know the results.
That seems incredibly unlikely.. probably a coincidence. Are you sure you don't work for Yahoo ?? :) -- Jeckyl
Hey all, I seem to be having this same problem with a Flash module I developed for my employer. My .swf was written with Flash MX 2004 Professional with ActionScript 2.0. That .swf is served up by an app server (via a .jsp) and accesses data (via a servlet) on the same server. While testing in-house, the module worked flawlessly with Flash Player 7.x and 8.0.22.0 on both IE 6 and Firefox (using Windows XP Pro). My team then took the module off-site to integrate it with a live demo. They are using Windows 2000 with IE 6 running Flash Player 8.0.22.0. Every time they try to access the .jsp with the flash module, IE fails to load the module and the browser hangs. The same thing happens when they try to load the raw .swf file in a browser window. This is very frustrating and looks bad on my company, so I hope a solution is found soon.
I have crash issues when closing IE6 running Flash Player 8. After any interaction (clicking a button and jump to a frame label) then closing the browser from the Close button, the browser window closes and I get an IExplorer Application memory error "Cannot read memory 0x10005f6c from 0x10005f6c". Unfortunately, it is certain scenarios: Running locally development & offline, fine. Running locally Apache Server, fine. Running remote Linux, crash. Running remote, Unix-non Linux at root level, crash. I can replicate doing a *very* basic Flash file: buttons, frames with labels to jump to, stop(); and text. Needless to say I uninstalled FPlayer 8 and reinstalled 7 and all is fine. It was *very* frustrating and time consuming to pinpoint so I hope this helps someone else out.
Very frustrating is right... I apologize; the problem was resolved this morning but reared it's ugly head after no changes to any files. However, there may be a conflict with AcroIEHlprObj in Internet Explorer 6 (Tools>Manage Add-ons...). I disabled it and restarted. Now it seems the issue is gone after testing. Then I reinstalled Flash Player 8; still no crash. So, I'm not sure this is just a Flash issue anymore. Anyone hear about this problem? Is this a legit BHO or some kind of virus?
I have been having severe problems with both InternetExplorer and MSN Explorer crashing and blaming browser ad-ons. At one point i could not even get on-line and Verizon couldn't help me. I blocked a couple ad-ons, more or less at random, choosing those whose publishers were not well known to me or not guaranteed. That got me back on, but i still get knocked off all the time. Lately, I've been getting messages, sometimes, pinpointing a particular ad-on. Last time it was Flash.ocx, Macromedia Flashplayer 7.0 r19. I'm using XP home w/SP 2. One of the first posters above suggested a way to update that file, and I intend to try it, but would appreciate any advice. (I don't have the expertise of many of the pros posting here.)
My error messages have a 'tech data' button, rather than 'advanced' button, and no add-on list there.. when I went to 'manage add-ons' from the control pannel, there was only one list, which did not contain the Flash.ocs that MS complained about. the wndow allowing choice of lists (previously) had only one 'option' that time. Anyone know how I can get back to the that other list? Previously MS was not indicating any particular add-on, and their advice on how to recognize a subversive one didn't apply to those in my lists.
I've never seen or heard of any evidence of uninstalling Yahoo making Flash crash .. the two controls/activex are unrelated .. one does not depend on the other. You would have no hope in any sort of lawsuit unless you had hard, reproducible, evidence that installing and then uninstalling Yahoo Messenger made Flash player stop working (and that this was the sole cause). It is just as likely something else you did to your machine was the cause. There is no scam here .. its just one of those silly conspiracy theories. As soon as anything on a computer doesn't behave as someone thinks it should there's always a conspiracy theory .. Microsoft sabotaging Flash, Flash in cahoots with Yahoo, etc etc. Something went wrong on your computer (if what you say is true).. but you cannot be sure what it was as there are too many variables and unknowns. No amount of whinging about it will stop it being your responsibility to fix what is wrong on your computer. Have you actually tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash to see if that works? Are you running on XP in limited user mode .. latest Flash Player has problems with that (that MM/Adobe are currently trying to sort out). You'll get a lot further if you try to help yourself and work with others to solve your problem instead of taking a typical American response of "I'm going to sue someone because it has to be anyone's responsibility but my own". -- Jeckyl
I'm experiencing the same problem. Flash 8 aws working FINE until I installed yahoo messenger because I had to to talk to someone ONE TIME. Then Flash 8 started crashing internet explorer after I uninstalled it. After reading the posts here, I'm convinced that this is somehow related and if Macromedia/Adobe doesn't take steps to remedy this situation, there are a few lawyers and definitely other users that I'd like to call in a class action lawsuit. I am NOT going to waste my time trouble shooting all my workstations because of some scam that they're pulling.
[quoted text, click to view] > there may be some malign interaction between Yahoo software and Flash.
Not really .. Flash Player is also used by MSN messenger to display 'winks'. -- Jeckyl
So, do I understand correctly that no one has actually solved this problem, other than through happy coincidence? Humbug... BTW, Does anyone else get hung up trying to install the Player on Firefox 1.0?
A tidbit: I left this forum to uninstall Flash 8 and install an earlier version. I found when I ran the uninstall utility that the Flash8 ocx was being used by Yahoo Messenger - it would not uninstall until I closed Messenger. So there may be some malign interaction between Yahoo software and Flash.
If I am correct, both MSN and AIM and maybe Yahoo (not sure as I don't use it) use flash to display the ads as well. Also seeing as I have never installed Yahoo Messenger or toolbar previously and said no to installing it when installing flash, I don't think Yahoo is the issue. On a side note has anyone noticed that when installing Adobe Reader that it prompts you to install the Yahoo toolbar as well?
I have the problem as well. A message pops up and says there is an error with the Flash8.osx add-on. So I uninstalled flash, clicked to install it again, it said it was successfully installed, but it's not. It's not the the control panel. Nothing I do seems to be working. Disabling AcrolEHiprObj doesn't work either.
Found this problem occuring at a website from a customer of mine... I analyzed that Internet Explorer crashes with the following stack trace: ~~ virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056cefe5() virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056cf0ae() virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056c196c() virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056d0a70() virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056c44a0() virtualcap_57f0230514b99a168bf23ad720b58b56.ax!056c44b7() [quoted text, click to view] > Flash8.ocx!300df459()
~~ - Have updated my Flash8.ocx to Flash8b.ocx (add-on update) --> No fix - Have updated my Shockwave ActiveX and Flash object (view objects) --> No fix My current versions are: * ActiveX object == 10,1,1,16 * Flash object == 8,0,24,0 Will analyze this problem more thoroughly tomorrow..
