macromedia players flash : Flash installs but doesn't play after XP Pro upgrade

I recently upgraded from Windows 2K to XP Pro. I've had problems with Flash
players on CNN working so I uninstalled/re-installed the Flash Player. Now I
can't get Flash to be recognized by IE 6. I think it is being downloaded fine,
but all Flash content through both IE and AOL is unavailable.

This isn't a Firewall or Security issue as I disabled the former and to the
best of my ability, lowered Security settings in IE to ridiculous levels to no
effect.

Any ideas?

I wish I had an answer for you. I just had my computer reformatted (xpsp1 home
ed) and had sp2 installed. I thought the problem was the sp2, so I've
uninstalled it. The flash 8 player didn't even want to d/l the installer, when
it finally did and I clicked on the exe I just got a blue "flash" on the
screen, then nothing. After multiple tries, I finally got it to install. But
now my IE homepage (which uses flash) doesn't want to open. And when I finally
do get it to load, I can't go anywhere - IE just locks up and crashes. I also
use Firefox (only way I'm online) and games aren't loading - either at all or
only loading partway then stopping. My firewall is set so that macromedia is
allowed and trusted. I even tried lowering security settings in my IE and on
my firewall temporarily (scary) but that did nothing.

I think, after talking to other people with Flash 8 problems and reading the
forum here that this is a problem with the way Flash 8 was done. I sure wish
someone from macromedia would come here, read all this, respond to us and DO
SOMETHING.
