macromedia players flash: Hi, looks like alot of people are having problems. I just found this forum
last night, and I don't know too many people who are aware that there is one or
there'd probably be alot more posts about this.

OK, I had my computer reformatted this week. Went to get Flash and Shockwave
and Flash did not want to d/l. This happened at least 5 times. Finally, I got
it to d/l to my desktop, clicked on the installer, got a little blue "flash"
across the screen then nothing. I had to try to install the darned thing I
think 3 or 4 times before it actually worked.

I need flash just to view my homepage (RR cable) and many sites we go to do
use flash now. At the moment I can't use my IE at all. When I click to open
it, I get a blank page saying done, so x out, try again. Then I get part of
the page (the topper). X out, try again. Then I'll finally get my full
homepage to load. But if I then try to go anywhere else IE locks up,
completely freezes, I get an error message and when I send the message to
microsoft I get "solution not found. unknown error occurred on your comupter
that caused IE to malfunction".

This is ridiculous!

Now games ... both on IE and FF (thank goodness for FF or I'd not be online at
all), I go to a game site that uses flash for just about everything. Most of
the pages and maps will load, though slowly. But games? Either won't load at
all or will start to load then just stop and sit there. I also tried playing a
flash/shockwave game on MSN zone, that caused my computer to crash and the
cause was the 8.ocx.

I'm all for security and making things safer, but this is just as bad as some
of the "fixes" microsoft put into sp2 - which uses active x just like flash
does. Security and safety mean nothing if you can't use the technology or
product to begin with!

I have a computer tech friendly person who's offered to come over and reformat
my computer again (had SP2 put on and have since uninstalled it as I thought
that was the root of my flash and shockwave problems) so now my computer's
messed up with all these bits and pieces floating around. So that's more
money I don't have to pay to have something done that I just had done! Plus
everything else that I will need to install - again.

Flash and Shockwave are very important components for online "living".
Please, to the powers that be and whoever wrote this version 8 .... DO
SOMETHING! I've never had a problem with flash or shockwave before either in
d/l, installing or using. Now? Nothing but problems.

I am having a similar problem. IE crashes every time a webpage loads with flash
on it (ie yahoo crashes but google does not). I installed a new graphics card
just before the problem started. It is an ATI 128MB card. All this started
after I installed this new AGP card. Maybe a graphics/driver conflict? Any
similarity to me? did you install any new graphics drivers, maybe update it or
something when you reformatted? IE works fine now that I have uninstalled
flash... but who wants a computer without flash?

Hi, I just found this forum too and you have pretty much described the problem
I seem to be having. I am not very savy when it comes to computers and their
jargon so I have a really hard time trying to figure out what to do when a
problem occurs.
I play JewelQuest a lot and lately I get the following error really often:

Problem description

"An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an
unknown error occurred in Flash Player. This software was created by
Macromedia, Inc..

Recommendations

Microsoft has researched this problem with Macromedia, Inc., and they do not
currently have a solution for the problem that you reported. Below is a list of
recommendations to take that may help prevent the problem from recurring.

Please click the following link for Flash Player support:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer
Additional information

If this problem continues to occur with the latest product updates for Flash
Player, we recommend you obtain assistance and troubleshooting information
directly from Macromedia, Inc"

Then MicroSoft apologizes for having to shut down! I think MSN Zone.com is
the only program it happens in, but I'm not sure I had to download the
ActiveX in order for JewelQuest to work and now I have this constant problem.
When I click on the Micromedia link provided on the MicroSoft error report to
update the Flash add-on I get a "there are no upgrades at this time'----so what
am I supposed to do OR does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks for your help................................

Right- see all the other posts on this forum. We all seem to have the same
crappy problem. I posted details for what I've tried under another quote for
al4sure. I'm trading messages now with a tech support guy who has not been
helpful so far. You'd think they'd check out these forums once in a while and
help folks out!

Sometimes we do. But these are peer-to-peer support forums, so we don't
-have- to. And generally don't have the resources to monitor these forums.

If you really need help then you have to go through
http://www.macromedia.com/support and open an incident. And for Flash
Player issues there is a contact link on
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/.

I need to know what your support incident # is so I can follow up...

I have looked at Adobe's responses to the Flash8.ocx crashing IE6 issues, and
they dont impress me one bit. They are giving the world the impression Adobe
management dont even care about this. Surely they realise this reflects
incredibly badly on Adobe and Macromedia.
Wev'e all tried everything suggested on the flash Player support centre (and
lots of other things) to no avail. Its a worldwide problem. Just look on the
internet!
All we see is Adobe and Microsoft blaming each other and Adobe trotting out
the same tired old response.
All we want is some acknowledgement there is a problem and that some-one is
working on a fix.

Does anyone ever respond? I just get an automated response, which i reply to,
since the info in the automated response in invariably useless. I've gotten
zero real replies after that. Hell, even a "we have no idea how to fix your
problem" would be fine.

Yes, it is a great problem that affecting to thousands of users.

1) I have found a solution. Install a previous flash player version (flash 6 o
2004).
example: C:\.....\Macromedia\Flash MX 2004\players\release\Install Flash
Player 7 AX.exe

2) Open I.E. and go to Macromedia flash player download page to update to
flash 8 version:

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockw
aveFlash

Now, it works ok,

JM

See comments from Qwann under "Flash 8 causes Internet Explorer to crash."
Seems it works OK only if you tick the box to install the universally hated Yahoo search bar. Very interesting.
