I recently became awear that I needed to update my verison of Macromedia Flash Player. However, when I went to the download page, the download would not start, and no prompts to install an acitveX controll would appear. Also, there was a blank box towards the top of the page. I beleive it was the sort of box that is sometimes displayed before an image/movie finishes loading on a page or if the image/movie fails to load. This box has been appearing in the place of flash content quite frquently lately, which is why I wanted to update my flash player. I am running on Windows XP SP2. I have checked all of my security systems to make sure that they are not simply preventing the download from happening, and they are not. Any imput/solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here's another user with the same inability to download Macromedia Flash via IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519. I've set all security settings (Internet as well as Trusted) to Enable or Prompt, and added Macromedia to the trusted sites. No components are being blocked (such as cookie references to 2o7.net that were blocked before I removed 2o7 from my restricted list). I've used Firefox to download the install_flash_player.exe file from http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.ex e Even that installer won't work. It expands files...I see references to GetFlash.exe, and the installer drops out of my Task List with no messages. I'm running Zone Alarm, but get no prompts, or messages in the logs. Running with ALL other apps disabled. Will try disabling Zone Alarm and see how that goes...
I too are sharing the same frustrations. I was able to see Flash content before I did the new version install. The install was complete (after I went to a support site and downloaded a (manual) version?) However, I am still unable to see any Flash content on any sites. Instead I see a small box w/ a circle, square and triangle in it. I am running Windows XP and wondering now it is a bug for XP users. Has anyone heard any information to fix the problem?
Anyone look at the xpsp2 pop-up blocker? Disable it completely or turn on prompting?
I get the message cannot find Install_flash_player_active_x.msi
I am also getting same problem i.e not able to install flash player 8 on windows XP SP2. My system flash plugin won;t work after w32.blaclmal virus attack (successfully cleaned by antivirus software). I have tried varous tips n hints from numerous forum, but still can't able to figure out "Why Flash plugin is not installed on windows XP +SP2". Installer starts copying file in c:\windows\system32\macromad.......then popup windows close!. nothing happen No flash player 8 installed. NOr do i able to install from macromedia website 2o7.net. Installation won't start Please help me in installing.
How do I download Flash 7 Plugin?????? PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!
;):confused; signed up for juno speedband 8/2005, I had macromedia installed then and have since updated to ADOBE with the same result. whenever i try to activate JUNO SPEEDBAND "to help protect your security, internet exployer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. click here for options..., you are seeing this text because you do not have
I still cannot load Flash 8 w/ Internet Exployer, HOWEVER, I loaded Mazilla Foxfire (free) and was able to load Flash8 in one try! I've been using it instead of Internet Explorer and am very happy with it. It's great. Give it a try!
I am getting this same problem... I have been going through a possible work around for the last few days but to no avail.... the odd thing is I am able to run a .swf file on its own, when I right click it says flash player 8, but if the .swf is within Internet explorer nothing shows up... Adobe Macromedia need to make this public and at least find a fix for it...
I agree that Adobe Macromedia need to find a fix for this, instead of continuing to stonewall and deny there is a problem. One member said that Flash8 player only works if you accept the"free offer" of Yahoo's dreadful searchbar that comes up on the Flash8 download page. Maybe try that and let us know how you go.

I can confirm that you MUST leave the tick in where it says to install the Yahoo searchbar, as unbelievable as this sounds, the download of the ActiveX control would only appear at the top of my Internet Explorer screen when I left this box ticked !!! Absolutely frustrating. So to all of you who have this issue just leave the box ticked to install the Yahoo searchbar. Then it should prompt you to install the ActiveX Control so please do so and once installed close off ALL Internet Explorer windows/screens. Then if you don't need the Yahoo searchbar as I had no need for it at all (I was forced to installed it against my will). Then click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel (if you can't see Settings, just click Control Panel), next double click Add / Remove Programs, scroll at the bottom of the list when it displays, highlight the Yahoo searchbar and click the button "Change/Remove" or if this doesn't appear click "Uninstall" on the bottom right of the screen and follow the prompts. When done reopen your Internet Explorer and you'll find the Macromedia content will finally work. For Macromedia to deny they don't have a bug their ActiveX Controller or setup software, I can definately confirm that they have a MASSIVE bug which thanks to the advice of Zephead987 I wouldn't have been able to install the Macromedia Flash Player. Very very frustrating indeed.
I had a problem downloading Flash Player also, but found a SOLUTION...Open your web browser and click Tools, then Internet Options. Click the Content tab, and go to Publishers. Click on the tab marked Untrusted Publishers and see if Macromedia is listed in the box. If it is, then click remove and it will allow you to download the Flash Player and other things from the company. I'm not sure how to mark them as untrusted again if you want to do that after installation...but hey, you've now got the player. Hope I could help!
Is there any real evidence of this .. Only once have I heard of someone reporting this is required, and with no good proof ? Three is no evidence of anywhere on the net that I can find of it fixing problems .. the only advice I ever see about it is "DO NOT INSTALL THE YAHOO TOOLBAR". Everyone else on the planet (or the vast majority) can install Flash Player WITHOUT that ticked. I know I certainly can .. and it gives no trouble at all on Windows XP SP2 .... I suspect there is some other issue at play here. I suspect that the rumours that this is required is a marketing ploy by Yahoo (or advertisers that use it) to get more downloads / installations of the toolbar. -- Jeckyl
Hi there, I was having the same problem and visiting the forum wasn't much help. Eventually I decided to download an earlier version of flashplayer (7). After downloading this one I was somehow able to download version 8. I forgot to uncheck the Yahoo box, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, probably not. Anyway it might be worth trying. Good luck.
We are also having the same problem. I have turned all security measures off and it still wont download. I have tried both checking and unchecking the yahoo box and it still wont download either way. I tried to find macromedia flash 7 to download as someone suggested but can only find updates. Not sure what to try now....
Hi, Although I am not sure of the cause of these installation and playback issues, I can confirm that you do *not* need to install Yahoo Toolbar in order to install Flash Player. The page is designed to detect whether you already have the current version -- if you do, then we don't make you go through an install process. So one case where you do not see the XP gold bar or activeX install prompt is when you already have the correct player. You can check if you have Flash Player installed, and if so, which version here: http://www.macromedia.com/go/tn_15507. The current version for Windows IE is 8.0.22.0. If you are still having problems, I recommend running the uninstaller ( http://www.macromedia.com/go/tn_14157 ), and reinstalling from www.macromedia.com/go/getflash. Also, note that the plugin for IE is different than the plugin for Firefox. They are unrelated, so you will need to install into each browser separately. The uninstaller will remove both. regards, Emmy Product Manager, Flash Player
How come the unistall will pop up for me to run it or save it, but the install will do nothing. I have tried at least 20 times to install it but it does not work. I have checked everything that I need to check and nothing works.
I did the uninstall and it said it unistalled successfully. I went to reinstall and nothing happens. On the page that comes up after clicking install, there is a box where flash content should be and all it has is a red x in it. Now what?
I had the same problem. I tried to upgrade for days and was unsuccessful. I tried many of the same things. Finally, today I decided to uninstall the Flash player completely and install Flash Player 7 as someone had suggested (downloaded from http://www.comcast.net/flashUpgrade.html). After a successful download, I restarted my computer and IT WORKED!! I was finally able to view the Flash content on my Yahoo homepage. Then I was able to download Flash Player 8 here without any problems, and I hadn't even changed any of my security settings. I hope this helps someone!:Q
Same here - if I try to install from the web site, I get some apparent file download activity (hard disk LED flashes), but no prompt to install an ActiveX control, no success message, no movie playing - NADA. I DL'd the installers (Flash Player and ActiveX control) and ran them from my hard disk - I got the 1904 errors until I used Mr. Bentley's suggested regedit fixes, but even though it now says it has installed OK, it never runs in the browser. Every site I go to with flash content says I need to install the Flash 8 player. DG
hey VEROLAMB! you completely ROCK! I followed your link and got flash player 7 to download and then got it upgraded to flash 8. Thanks !
I tried everything except checking the box for Yahoo's toolbar (it did say it wasn't needed). I have been up around the clock and have been at this problem for days. I refuse to quit. Do you think there is any other possible solution? I have the files: Flash.ocx, GetFlash.exe, GetFlash.exe.manifest, and NPSWF32.dll in the Flash folder (which is 1 out of the 5 folders in Macromed<system32<Windows) of WindowsXP Home Edition. Everything appears to have installed okay, but when I test for flash...never do I get anything other than that white box with the little icon. Shockwave however works.
I forgot to add that I know for sure there is no trouble with Flash Player 8 to work correctly when opting out to install Yahoo's toolbar (it just doesn't work on this hard drive). Why one drive had no trouble and the other drive (this one) does, I just might expire from exhaustion from not giving up.
One last comment: The drive flash 8 works on is Windows XP Professional. The one it doesn't work on is XP Home. Do you think the Home version just can't handle what the Pro one can? My Home version isn't as fresh of an install as the Pro, so I doubt the real answer to this question might be impossible to answer unless someone else can varify the same observation.
Actually faithfilly, I'm using professional and I can say that I've been trying to download this player all week with no luck. I've tried everything suggested, and nothing will work. There's no gold bar, there's no prompts for installation, I've tried flash player 7, I've checked the box for the yahoo toolbar, I've changed my security settings, removed programs, checked publishers, uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted and torn up my clothes. I need some answers.
Thelm, I'm amazed over the inconsistency of this issue. I wish I knew how I got it to work on the Pro drive. It wasn't too long ago when I installed it there. I vaguely remember it acting stubborn to install so I kept doing it over and over; then finally it installed. I got the player to download but that does no good when it doesn't work after the installation.
Maybe this reply will work since I've written it in MS word and did a copy & paste! When I downloaded both versions (7 & 8), the flash still didn?t work. After giving up, about 20-30 minutes later, a Flash message pops up asking me if I want to upgrade my Flash to a newer version. Of course I said OK (made no sense though since I had installed version 8 after 7 already). As soon as the Flash program did it?s thing, the Flash now does its job beautifully! I had ridiculous difficulties trying to find where to download Flash 7, even after going to Comcast.net! The version 7 for Macromedia Flash is available at Comcast.net, but don?t ask me where. I wish I wrote down what I did, but after about 21 hours of practically a non-stop obsession to get Flash working?anyone would kind of not feel like writing details anymore (especially when nothing seemed to work and there didn?t look like any hope in success coming)! Thank you everyone for what you?ve written here in this forum on this thread! I couldn?t have done it without you and want you all to know you can succeed if you just don?t quit trying. I must have done uninstalls and reinstalls totaling around 15 times each. I won?t even mention all the other things I?ve tried (but didn?t seem to solve the problem).
See the post in macromedia.flash by Bentley Wolfe... TEST POTENTIAL FIX for 1904 Flash Player install issue. A number of users have had this problem. Some have posted threads, others have opened support incidents. We have a potential fix but I need to have it confirmed by end users before I feel comfortable publishing a technote. If you have the 1904 error, please test these steps to see if they allow you to then install Flash Player 8. Reply back to the thread with your results.. (If you have other Flash Player install issues, see http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer). You will need to be comfortable editing the registry with regedit. If you are _NOT_ comfortable editing the registry then it's probably best to just wait until we confirm a solution and publish a technote, or to take your machine to a professional. STEPS: In the registry find the following keys (if they exist). Then right click and grant read/full control to Administrator. :disgust; I too am having similar problems with Macromedia.I recently uninstalled the older version of flash player from my PC, but now find myself unable to download the newer version. I use windows Xp professional and so far followed unscreen instructions to download Macromedia, all I get is a blank space with a small sqr. red & white image in the uper left hand corner. and thats it. the effect of this is that I use Incredimail, but now that wont work because it needs macromedia installed to make it work. Please help. Moraise
:confused; I am not able to get Flash Player 8 installed either.
I tried that and had no luck in getting Flash 8 installed.

I am running on Windows XP SP2. I followed all the advice mentioned and NOTHING works. This is truly frustrating! I can not download Macromedia Flash Player. I uninstalled the previous versions and attempted to reinstall. The download would not start, and no prompts to install an acitveX controll would appear. Also, there was a blank box towards the top of the page. PLEASE HELP!:confused;
About 2 mos. ago, Flash Player stopped working. Seemed to be blocked because the files were still there. I suspect spyware had something to do with it. For the last 2 months I have been trying everything to get it working and also have not been able to download a new player. All I get is the blank little box on the download screen with nothing happening. This has been a HUGE headache and I have been having many of the problems above. I finally was able to fix it today after uninstalling the old version and then downloading Flash 8 from http://www.brothersoft.com/dvd_video/multimedia_player/macromedia_flash_player_d ownload_43144.html (found by a last ditch, desperate google search) It works now. There is absolutely no reason one must go through such headaches on the Macromedia site to get their free player! Let it be downloaded like any other freaking file.
After many tech support calls and frustrated nights, I have finally figured out the problem of getting Flash 8 installed on MSIE on XP with SP2. It was a tech support nightmare. I almost lost my job over it. Anyway, the answer. Managed Add-ons. Go to Tools->Manage Add-ons. You may have to use the drop down to show "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer". Find the "Shockwave Flash Object" published by "Macromedia, Inc". First thing is to make sure it's status is "Enabled". If it's enabled and still does not work, select it from the list and click the "Update ActiveX" button. That will kick off the Security Warning pop-up with the Install button. I have fixed about 3 customers so far with more customers to call. Note: This is something new from MS.
Phil, I saw your response to the Flash issue on going to Tools and selecting Manage Ad ons. I am unable to find this option. I have tried all other suggestions and help that others in the Forum have given and I still cannot get the Flash download to be successful. I have spent countless hours trying to fix this issue. As a work around I have installed it in Firefox but that is not hte solution as I still experience issues viewing certain sites that have Flash content. I am extremely frustrated and appreciate any help you can offer.
phill-- do you see how many problems i am having with this? i cant even get anything to go through on this forum.... well i think you know the problems i am having.... i tried your advise with the ''manage ad-ons'' now what didnt work here is when i went to push the ''update activeX'' button, it wont let me i only have the otion to enable or disable.... any suggestions?!?!!?? thanks much, ash
:disgust;Text I have been trying for a week to get macromedia flash player to work. Very frustrated. Never had this problem with 7. I don't have pop up blocker, have internet security as low as I can get it, tried everything suggested on here! Still no luck getting it to work. It's also a new computer. Any better suggestions? Even tried http://www.comcast.net/flashUpgrade.html, & other ones suggested.
I cannot for the life of me download Macromedia Flash Player..... What is wrong?
Since Microsoft seems to want everyone to have a hard time, I suggest switching to Mozilla Firefox. Flash 8 installs just fine and works great. Firefox just works better. You may lose the ability to use MSIE only web apps, but do you _really_ need them? Get policy changed and get FireFox installed and let MS know you don't like how they are doing business.
:confused; I am experiencing the same problem here... For no apparent reason, my Flash player is no longer working in IE and some other programs (including the software I use to organize my MP3s). When I visit sites with Flash content, I'm told that I need to install the player. When I do try to reinstall version 8, nothing happens... no gold bar, nada. When I download the file from a non-Macromedia site, it starts to install, then I get this error message: Error 1904.Module C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8.ocx failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel. What a headache! I've tried literally everything suggested by other uses both here and in other fora, from editing the registry to uninstalling-reinstalling-uninstalling-reinstalling to checking out Manage Add-Ons and Publishers to setting permissions... basically everything short of dancing on my head and chanting in Urdu. So far, nothing has worked. I'm at my wit's end! I never realized how much I rely on Flash... Nearly every site I regularly visit uses Flash content. It's driving me crazy not to be able to see it! I should point out that Flash appears to work fine in Mozilla... this will do until I can resolve the issue, but I don't want it to be a long term fix. I actually enjoy using IE and would prefer to continue using it. I'm so disgusted with this problem and the inability of whosever-fault-it-is to fix it. Please, please, please... can someone help me?
For those of you who have attempted to update Macromedia Flash Player to the latest version (8.0.24) for Internet Explorer and haven't had the best of luck, please refer to a recent article posted on http://www.novelimage.net. They give easy to follow instructions on how to allow users to view flash content within IE on a Windows XP system. The problem that most of you are encountering is resolved by the aforementioned article. Please let me know if the article is useful. - gu1cho
I need help. Just bought a new computer and it has flashplayer 9 on it. I am in the process of moving all of my bookkeeping accounting software to the new computer and my 2005 version of Quickbooks Accountant Edition needs Flashplayer 7 to install it. I went to try and find it in downloads to no success. I absolutely need to install that software on my new computer, and it says it needs flashplayer 7. I had no trouble two years ago when I originally installed it on my other computer. Can someone help me out here. Not sure how I can get flashplayer 7 installed on my new computer
