macromedia players flash : Linux, True Type Fonts and Flash Player

Hi!

I'm using Flash Player 7 (7,0,25,0) under linux (A debian-based distribution
made for a spanish ministry) running Mozilla Firefox 0.8 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U;
Linux i686; es-ES; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040614 Firefox/0.8).

I have some problems with true type fonts when using dynamic text fields. I'm
trying to let the user change the font of the text field by prompting a list of
the available fonts installed on the system. When I get to that point there are
only the flash player default fonts for dynamic text and not the full range of
fonts installed on the system. That's strange considering that I have followed
many "how to"'s over the net to install the true type fonts in linux and it
works for every program except Flash Player.

I have already tried to attach and link the true type font into the document
and it doesn't work.

How does Flash Player detect the fonts installed on the system? This can help
you to find out where the problem comes from.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Is it a bug of linux flash
player? I think this didn't happen in Flash Player 6, but I don't remember.

Thank you in advance!

I also have problems about fonts... but not those, which you have.

I may help you about fonts. The 'installed fonts' may be two: those in the
Xserver, and those in 'fontconfig'. Maybe 'flash' uses fontconfig. Try to
configure your fontconfig, or your xserver, according to the possible
misconfiguration.

This is not a solution... but a little help in trying to solve the problem.

[ A user has experienced the problem with "wimpy player" which utilizes
dynamic text, and is unable to see the text in the player.

Hmm. Interesting. Flash handles text in two ways: 1) you can "embed" the font
into the swf. 2) you can cause the swf to use a kind of "default" text -- much
like in HTML, where you can specify "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif." Wimpy
utilizes the latter. Under this type of font display method, the swf/plugin is
dependent on comparable fonts within the end-users system. I have no idea how
the plugin actually makes the connection to the system to grab the proper
font... One would think that there is a default action in the plugin to use a
"fail-safe" font in the case that the requested font is not available -- i know
this type of behavior is in the windows and mac plugins.

What i might do to troubleshoot is ensure that "Arial", "Helvetica" or
"sans-serif" is defined within the OS... paying special attention to the upper
/ lower case of the font definitions and/or the dash between the sans-serif.
You might want to do a little testing with straight HTML. WHat i mean by this
is create some basic HTML that references "Arial", "Helvetica" or "sans-serif"
-- such as:

<p><font face="Arial">Test Type - Arial</font>
