Hi salmerin,

i wasn't to surf on any website using Flash player 7. after almost a week of
research and testing I finally got Shockwave and Flash Player 7 working.

What I did is :

download "uninstall_flash_player.exe" and "flashplayer7_ax.exe" (the
stand-alone installer).
removed everything, restart the pc, install Flash Player, reboot. then I
went to the Macromedia test page : www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/
for Shockwave and Flash player.

If you see the animations, everything is just fine. It worked for me.

good luck,

michel

Internet Explorer has ecountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close.

The following add-on was running when this problem occured:

File: flash.ocx
Company Name: Macromedia, Inc.
Description: Macromedia Flash Player 7? This free player is required to view
the website you are visiting.

My daughter's computer is also crashing IE on every flash site she enters. We
removed and re-installed flash totally, no change. We reformatted the Hard
drive, installed flash fresh, and IE crashed immediately,

Something is wrong with flash. We can install flash 6 ans run beautifully, but
everything ewwhines wanting flash 7. As soon as it's installed, poof. I am
getting real tired of this.. Any clues

We are currently researching a crashing issue involving machines with a
VIA chipset on their motherboard.

See this thread for details:
<http://groups-beta.google.com/group/macromedia.players.flash/browse_thread/thread/1408fbe36cb4a9dd/41210c7391d4bb21?q=wolfe+via+group:*flashplayer*&_done=%2Fgroups%3Fq%3Dwolfe+via+group:*flashplayer*%26start%3D0%26scoring%3Dd%26safe%3Dimages%26lr%3D%26hl%3Den%26&_doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#41210c7391d4bb21>

From AOpen's website it seems a number of their boards use the VIA
chipset (http://global.aopen.com.tw/products/mb/).. (However, they
don't list an AX6BC board?)

My computer is experiencing similar problems (flash.ocx error crashes IE). I
cannot visit any flash sites without having IE crash at least once if not every
visit to a Flash enabled site. I have googled for a solution during the past 3
months and have found plenty of users with the same problem but no solutions.
I am running Windows ME (with latest OS patches) on an SIS 630 chipset with the
latest version of Flash player (v 7.0.19.0 Win).

Well, so far the only common cause we know of is the VIA chipset (and it
may be on your board somewhere. Finding it hasn't been easy)
Unfortunately I just don't have any more information than that at this
time.

Thanks Bentley.

I am very familiar with the motherboard and can guarantee that it does not
have any VIA components (actually it's a Luxor OEM board manufactured for IBM -
sold under the X40 Netvista moniker).
I came across another post in this forum from someone who had experienced
similar crashes. This person resolved the problem further to running a memory
diagnostic and discovering that they had bad RAM. Similarly, I decided to run
a memory diagnostic program and discovered that my system was having problems
with the L2 cache on PIII chips (I tried 3 different PIII CPU's - which
resulted in the same memory diagnostic error codes). Once I switched to
Celeron based CPU's, the memory passed. Once the memory issue was resolved, I
followed through with a visit to a Flash based web site (scoobydoo.com - one of
my daughter's favorites). This ended up locking up the browser and
furthermore the entire system (forced a re-boot). I uninstalled Flash 7 &
and then re-installed Flash 6. This seemed to work fine (scoobydoo.com) until
a day later - same system lockup occurred again.
Hmmm. It might be a hardware issue as you mention - though I'm not certain
it is specific to VIA chipsets. Do you know if Flash makes use of particular
CPU features (e.g. Intel SSE, MMX etc.)? I get the feeling that there's a
function 'call' being made by Flash at a low level that is causing a particular
piece of hardware to hang the system.

I'm having the same issue. I've read other forums and it doesn't seem to be
hardware issue or browser issues, but rather FLASH.OCX issues. This really
should be fixed. Noone will visit a site if they know it's going to crash.

Here's an update since my last post:

Further to the memory problems with the CPU, I inquired with IBM to discover
that the board installed in my system has a 66MHz front side bus. This would
explain the memory errors since the PIII CPU's tested were equipped with 133MHz
front side bus. I installed an older Celeron 633 with a 66 MHz FSB and ran a
full set of hardware tests. Low level hardware checked out perfectly. Only
exception was the Flash 'crash' under WindowsME ended in a total system
lockup. I uninstalled Flash 7 (with the flash uninstaller supplied on
Macromedia's website) and re-installed Flash 6. Total system lock-up again.
Un-installed Flash 6 (with macromedia's uninstaller app.), and re-installed
Flash 7. Now everything works fine. Since then, the only lock-ups I
experience seem to be triggered by a specific Microsoft Active X plug-in
(installing the ".NET" framework from windowsupdate.com). I would therefore
suggest to anyone experiencing the "Flash.ocx" crash that they take a hard look
"under the hood' of their computer (i.e. memory, CPU, chipset, configuration)
prior to looking for answers from Macromedia.

I am having most of the problems as everyone else, except I get no error
messages or any indication that I tried to download FLASH.

I have tried everything from changing settings in my firewalls and pop-up
blockers to disabling my firewall and blockers for the duration, which is
dangerous since I believe someone is attacking my computer on a regular basis.
(Actually I think a malicious file was downloaded on the computer and none of
my security features can find it.)

I do not even know how this happened. I just noticed that FLASH wasn't
running and I couldn't view a web application. I uninstalled FLASH according
to the directions above, but I cannot locate the standalone download for FLASH.
I 'searched' Macromedia, which couldn't find that file.

Where do I get it? I had to do standalone for shockwave, too, and it worked,
I think. Both of these were embedded in the system when I purchased it.

I too am encontering problems with the Flash OCX module. Here's my story:

I created some FLV's for a client's site, tested them, uploaded them and such.
When I created a simple PHP script to get simple URL encoded variables (via
$_GET[] superglobal) and echo them into the <embed> and <param> tags as is
described in this article:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?event=view&id=KC.tn_14
253&extid=tn_14253&dialogID=2591013&iterationID=1&sessionID=9630f4363c74a$3FP3P$
&stateID=0%200%202589018&mode=simple#querystring I started encountering
problems with the Flash.ocx module.

At this point, AFTER attempting to close the window (using two different
methods - both a javascript call from within the SWF and using the Windows
"X"), I'm presented with the "add-on crap-out" dialog.

I've checked my Flash Player version - 7,0,19,0. I decided to try it on my
Mac OS X 10.3 laptop and encountered similar issues.

Here's a breakdown by platform and browser (version noted) as to the results:
====================================
URL for examination: http://www.christhrash.com/products.html
Click "Preview Online" to trigger said behavior - launches a new window via
JavaScript. Try closing the window using the link in the SWF or using the OS
Window controls.

Windows XP Professional SP2:

MSIE 6 .0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
-------------------------------------
After closing the window using any aforementioned method, I'm presented with
the exact same dialog as is described in the very first post in this thread.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107
Firefox/1.0
--------------------------------------
After closing the first window, behavior is normal for several more minutes.
I haven't been able to ascertain a certain timeframe because the number of
viewing attempts and time between initialization and crash varies. I've seen
FF present me with a dialog saying something to the effect of "A third party
component has crashed. You are strongly advised to restart Navigator." (I
specifically remember it saying 'Navigator' NOT 'Firefox'). In another,
seperate attempt after a reboot, the window continued to launch, but it showed
the SWF in a very disjointed, jumbled layout - almost like the graphic data
itself was corrupt. None of the interface controls worked, even when I moused
over their "new", out-of-place position.

Opera 7.5.4 Build 3869
--------------------------------
Amazingly, NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! I can't seem to make it "break" in this
browser at all.

Apple Mac OS X 10.3
================

Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac 5.2.3 (5815.1)
------------------------------------------------------------------
When launching the window that plays the video, the first frame is shown then
no actual video follows it. I get no "hand" when hovering over my close link
in the SWF, and closing it by force results in the death of the entire
application.

Apple Safari 1.2.4 (v125.12)
-------------------------------------
Exact same behavoir as MSIE 5.2 Mac

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/2041107
Firefox/1.0
--------------------------------------
Video shows first frame while allowing audio to continue (as above). However
with Firefox, I lose complete control over the application, and FF appears to
be completely lockd up. Eventually (after 30 seconds or so) another frame will
play, but the audio will be well ahead of it.

Stats on my production Windows PC:
---------------------------------------------------
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2

I apologize for the length of this post, but I really would like to see this
problem resolved. It seems to me that this has crept up just in recent months.
There could have been a coding error somewhere along with way with Flash (as I
don't buy the problem with low-level hardware, although I could be wrong) that
didn't sufficiently check external factors that may have been influenced by the
date. Besides, even if it IS hardware related, I hardly think an acceptable
solution is for normal users who are experiencing this issue (people's family,
kids, etc. not just developers) to do hardware diagnostics.

I'd very much like to help Macromedia with this issue in any way I can.

One thing I forgot to mention: I compared my player versions installed to the
latest versions available for each OS through your site. Both my PC and my Mac
have the latest version of the player installed for both browsers.

My mistake, I tweaked that page because it's a live document, didn't want a
bunch of links that break people's browsers - thanks for reminding me!
