macromedia players flash:
I 've got the latest versions of flash and shockwave player. But my " .swf " files are not linked to flash or shockwave player. Their icons are even not changed in an flash or shockwave icon. And if i want to open these files with a program (" open with "), it is not possible to find a program named flash or shockwave player to link them. What must i do? I 've win xp pro (full updated)
That is correct . All you have is the player control/plug-in for use in a browser. You don't have the stand-alone player (which comes with Flash MX etc). Select your browser as the program to open your SWF files. Or see if you can get a stand-alone flash player. -- Jeckyl

Thank you for replying nightwish1966. I know that by installing FlashMX, the stand-alone player gets installed as well, but, the problem I have is that I cannot go to the 5 computers and install FlashMx on their machines, as it would be illegal. The other problem is that when I cut this animation to CD, 2000 users will be using the animation. So the only thing I could think of, was to download the stand-alone drivers and put it on the CD. This does not work. I see now that they have a new Flash player (which I have downloaded) but this only works for browsers and not as a stand-alone.
If you want it stand-alone, then make a projector exe (which is freely redistributable). -- All the best Jeckyl
I seem to be experiencing the same problem. I have downloaded the stand-alone flash player from the macromedia website and installed it on 3-5 different computers and none of them can read the .swf file. My need is a simple one i.e. I have a flash animation installed on the 5 computers and I would like the user to click on the swf file and the file must play BUT like nightwish1966 the file does not even assosiate with the flash player. How can this be rectified?
Sorry something else that I would like to mention is the fact that I have given the website of the flash player and asked the users to download it directly from Macromedia's website themselves, BUT this does not solve the problem.
Thank you once again for replying as I really enjoy your input to the problem .... heee. Ok! Yes you are correct making an exe works and that is what I am busy doing at the moment but I have variouse problems with this. 1) Size .... size always seems to count ... heeee. 2) Our firewalls prevent exe's going through (there are variouse steps around this but believe me it is a hassel). 3) I have a client that I am creating a web site for. I sent him all the files so that he can make alterations etc, only to find out that he cannot view the swf file. I sent him the stand-alone player ... did not work ... sent him to Macromedia's website ... no luck. (Hopefully this new player will work ... I will let you know). To conclude .... what happened to the old days where I installed the stand-alone player and it would play the swf, no matter if you were in the browser or not? Thanks Jeckyl
There was never a time where you had a standalone player you could redistribute .. only way to get it was to install Flash. -- All the best Jeckyl
Are you sure about that Jeckyl? Then how is it that before could I distribute all my swf files and they worked? Whenever there was a problem I sent the player to the user and it would solve the problem .. or I would send them to the website and they would download the player and it worked. I seem to still be doing the same thing but the results do not work .... I mean the files do not even associate with the player (that needs explination). It is my opinion that the player seems to be faulty. Do you think I will discover anything if I creat something in Flash 5, take the player for Flash 5 (which I have saved) and see what happens. Then do the same with FlashMX and the new player. Reason being is that I want to make 100% sure that what I did in the past worked. Once again thanks for you input Jeckyl
Someone must have had an illegal stand-alone flash player. Or they had a projector exe that they had set up as a player. Its never been (as far back as I remember, around Flash 4) legal to redistribute the standalone player, and MM have not made it available for download (only updates to it). But there certainly were/are copies around illegally .. there is no protection for it, and it is very easy to get by installing the Flash trial. Also the player control you could download (not standalone) never has and doesn't play swf files standalone. If you have a flash 5 player, and don't mind doing the strictly illegal thing of giving to someone else, then it should be ok (if your swf is published to FP5). -- All the best Jeckyl
Mmmm ... maybe my terminology is incorrect. If one goes to this site http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/ the second last link on the page " Interested in distributing the Macromedia Flash or Macromedia Shockwave Players? ISPs, enterprises, and software developers can distribute the Macromedia Flash Player on intranets and fixed media. Learn more about the free Macromedia Flash distribution agreements for intranet and physical media distribution. Macromedia Flash Player Licensing" Is this not a stand-alone player? This is what I have been distributing with my CD's. Dimitri
No, that's the installer for the browser plugin.
This flash Player is really giving me a headache. I have a client with Windows XP. I have installed the latest Flash Player on his machine. I created a webpage for him and everything works 100% exept the .swf file??? What is the matter? In the last 5 years I have never experienced such trouble with the Flash Player .... Can anybody help? Dimitri:confused;
Maybe its you HTML in the web page .. can you provide a link to it? -- All the best Jeckyl
Unfortunately the webserver is down and has been for some time (not sure when it is going to be up and running). If you have the time and you want to help me out I can zip it and send it to you? Dimitri
