When I attempt to install Flashplayer 7 on FC 3 x86_64, I get the following
msg: FlashPlayer is not compatible with x86_64 architecture. Hao is this
since FC 3 runs both i386 and x86_64 programs? How can I download and install
a 32 bit version of FlashPlayer?

You can force the 32 bit one to install, although you'll need to ensure if you
use Firefox browser that you downgrade from 64bit firefox to 32 bit as the 64
Bit firefox won't talk to the 32 bit Flash.
To force the 32 bit to install....
Search the file "flashplayer-installer" for the text "# check architecture"
and you'll see a short section of code that checks the architecture (uname -m)
to ensure it identifies itself as containing i386 or similar. Just change the
line
i[3456]86)
so it instead reads
x86_64)
and it should just ignore the check for supported architecture and carry on
installing.
Hope that makes sense!

The best suggestion I would give you is make your request known to the Flash
Player Product team by submitting the issue here:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

FYI, they do know about the issue and are currently looking at it. I can't
say if a fix or player is in progress or not, but I would suggest you fill out
the form above if that is something you really want to see.

Thanks for commenting Jason, but I find it very hard to believe that Macromedia
"have been looking at it" for the last year and still not managed to find the
right compiler!!!

I thought when I got my 64bit machine 7 months ago that it would be a matter
of days before there was x86_64 version of the flash plugin for
Linux/Firefox&Mozilla. I mean it should just be a matter of recompiling and
perhaps thrashing out the "bad programming practices" that sometimes sneak in
to code. I'd pace money on some curious dev's at MM having knocked up a x86_64
version in their spare time (probably about a 9 months ago!!) but they can't
share it due to "support" issues. I appreciate MM don't want the burdon of
supporting an additional product, but how about relasing it under a license
that simply doesn't provide any? I mean people haven't got *anything* at the
moment, surely something is better than nothing?

Sorry to rant, but it bugs me when something this simple to produce is ignored
for so long.... If the player had been Open Source we would have had our
version from day one (OK, maybe day two!!).

I'd place money on there being one for Firefox on OSX/Intel befoer we get one
for Linux/x86_64.....

I totally agree with you ColinGooth, so far I haven't found a plug-in for
Fedora x86-64, It is unbelievable how slow is Macromedia to release a plugin
for software that's been out for quite a long time.

Like most companies, it seems like nobody cares about converting their
applications to 64-bit. I thought Macromedia/Adobe was more on the cutting
edge of technology, we need companies like these to push the new technology

Any high-end system nowadays is 64-bit. By late next year, virtually everything is going to be 64-bit. Come on Macromedia, get with the program! (pretty please!)

I also have a hard time understanding Macromedia's inattention. I have had my
current setup -- dual Opteron x86_64 system for, what, a year? Just installed
VMWare 5.5 update -- 64-bit capable now.

I love my setup, but I don't think you'll find me switching to my Windows VM
just so I can view Flash :)

My reaction is different. I think that, from an accessibility standpoint,
sites that insist on Flash are a pretty bad idea. Since I don't have Flash,
these sites are pretty obvious. So now, when I encounter a site like that, I
send "sales/info@thatcompany.com" something of a canned email saying that
making their Web site Flash dependent is a bad idea and turns away business. I
can't count the number of sites I've sent mail to. Tonight,
www.bellwetherclothing.com. Last week, smartwool.com (interesting socks,
stupid site). and the list is quite long. (I've started to bookmark them in a
folder!).

So that's kind of my strategy. I don't have Flash, c'est la vie. I just make
sure that I let people know I don't like and can't use their alleged "Web
sites".

What is Macromedia/Adobe's business plan for flash?
Do they plan on killing it once the industry standard move to 64 bit computing
is complete?
Once could certainly figure this is the case.
That or their code is not at all portable?
Surely porting it to 64bit linux might even result in a bit of a cleanup of
the code, improving the longevity and maintainability of the codebase.
If flash doesn't work on the platform which I develop for, I won't use it, I
will use other tools.

I would say it is time to give it up, people. Looks like Macrodobe doesn't
have a clue. If you are waiting for them to produce x86_64, you might want to
put on your dive mask, hold your nose, go to the bottom of the pool and hold
your breath. It is not clear they would recognize portable code if it whupped
them upside the head with a Ted Williams signature model.

Probably time to get over Flash and move on. Stupid technolgy anyway.

is pathetic.......... After several month users in this forum are asking for
the 64bit version of the program - nothing happens. Adobe/Macromedia has
apperenttly and obviously NO intention to support the Linux users - I hate to
say it - but: it only shows that Linux users can not count on SW-companies.
I propose that webdesigners now need to "pull-to-the-plug" and ignore in
their designs projects the products from companies like Adobe/Macromedia and

This is crazy! I am running Fedora Core 5 on an AMD64. I have installed the
i386 (32-bit) versions of both mozilla (/usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.12/) and firefox
(/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/). I have commented out the check for architecture
in the installation script. I have even tried explicitly copying or symlinking
the 'libflashplayer.so' and 'flashplayer.xpt' files to all of the following
directories:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.12/plugins/
/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/plugins/
/home/<login>/.mozilla/plugins/

I also tried putting (both copying and linking) 'libflashplayer.so' to
'/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/plugins/' and 'flashpalyer.xpt' to
'/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/components/'. Neither of the browsers show anything
in the list of plugins (mozilla's "Help->About Plug-ins" or either browser's
"about : plugins" URI), and both still definitely behave as if the plugin were
not present (will not display flash animations).

I know I'm not totally off base, because I CAN get the Java1.5 plugin to work
in both Mozilla and Firefox by linking to it in
'/usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.12/plugins/' and '/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/plugins/',
respectively.

You should try to disable SELINUX in /etc/sysconfig/selinux.
Try to change the line SELINUX=enforcing to SELINUX=permissive (or disable).

Ah. Thanks! I had no idea it was an SELinux issue. There was no output to
stdout or stderr or anything.

It was not necessary to disable SELinux or set it to permissive. It turns out
I just had to set the 'allow_execmod' boolean to true. Thanks again!

Jason can you tell me if the hp-ux 11i version 6 of Flash is 64bit?

Also I think my amd64 3200 is over three years old now and my suse linux amd64
9.0 book is from 2003.
So after three years can you please find out when an alpha version of x86-64
linux flash will be released?

I hate having to tell your customers to stop using flash as I can not use
there websites or see any ads.
