So, I installed Tiger and everything was running just fine -- including flash. One day, I went to load a flash site and the video loaded fine, but there was no audio. I've tried everything I can imagine. All the other audio on my computer works, I've uninstalled and reinstalled as recommended on 'try me first', I've run searches w/ various key words to find answers, and I am here, not having found any on my own. Anyone have any hints or suggestions?
Flash Player was working ok for me after upgrading to Tiger until just recently. I've tried uninstalling Firefox, uninstalling Flash Player, etc, several times, but so far I can still see the animations, but not hear anything. All of the other audio on my Mac is working fine.
ok, so this is really strange -- I reinstalled tiger, and when freshly installed flash worked fine... i have no clue what was going on, but it seems to be working @ 100% now. I even saved my previous user folder and transfered all the accounts (minus the prefs)... so I'm guessing it was completely something in the system somewhere. Halo wasn't working before either, but it runs like a dream now. Go figure. I suggest a reinstall, for whatever reason. At least it works. good luck. ~j
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@892.09ANab6DUUQ.1@.68af3da0/1, which they suspected was caused by updating iTunes. I recently updated to iTunes 4.8, too. Since you reinstalled OS X have you upgraded iTunes? If so, is Flash Player audio still working. This is my first Mac and I've only had it for 9 days. The thought of doing a fresh install so soon is a little disconcerting.
You know, that was one of the first things I thought -- audio resource confilcts between the two applications (flash and iTunes 4.8). Thankfully I have a community of friends who use macs, all of whom are running tiger, itunes 4.8, and flash w/ no problem. If it were a major conflict I'm sure there would be more people w/ the same problem, but there was probably some fluke somewhere (maybe installed iTunes 4.8 w/ safari open and a flash animation loaded!?) and ideally it could be solved easier than a reinstall... maybe deleting certain pref files or something like that. But at this point in the game for *me*, everything is backed up and it was a breeze for me to reinstall and I don't have the time to try and figure it out right now. Hopefully you may be able to find an easier solution, or at least maybe you dont' have much to backup since you just got your comptuer recently! Did you have any app open when installing the iTunes upgrade? it may be good for us to compare notes (as much as memory allows) to see what could be causing the problem. It would be good to get at least one resource out there availabe for people w/ this problem. Have you tried downgrading iTunes to 4.7 to test flash? that could be a next good step. peace, ~j
I may have had a flash animation open when I was upgrading iTunes. I also recently installed Audacity. I know for sure that I was playing a song in iTunes while I installed it and when I ran it for the first time. I remember the song coming to an abrupt halt. I'll try downgrading iTunes if I can. If all else fails I'll probably back up the little data I have on there and do a fresh install The computer came with 10.3 on it, so it wouldn't hurt to make it a clean install rather than an upgrade. Thanks for your help. I'll report back here.
I have also had this exact problem. On Tiger, no flash animations, FLVs, or projects in the Flash MX 2004 editor will generate any audio. I also recently installed Audacity, on the same day the problem started. My audio is fine for everything but Flash. Please, any ideas for fixing this short of reinstalling the system would be very very welcome.
I read in the Apple forums to run Garage Band to fix the problem. I tried it and it worked. I've got sound again. Aparently when you start Garage Band it checks and repairs some core audio settings, or something. Anyway, it works now. Give that a try.
Yup, Garage Band does indeed seem to do the trick. I also installed Audacity and this thread seems to suggest a connection between that and the stopping of sound in Flash. Seems like this is a pretty simple solution so you may not need to avoid Audacity altogether, but be aware that this problem may happen if you decide to install it.
Strange twist. I too had the sound problem caused (somehow) by the installation of Audacity. I ran Garageband and this fixed the sound in my browsers, but not the player used to preview the Flash site that I am building! This is frustating to say the least. Any ideas?
Same issue. I installed audacity and lost the ability to use audio in Flash. The frustrating thing was that sometimes it worked; most times it did not. When visiting sites with .swf files playing audio, it also didn't work, so it isn't just the development environment. As others have found, launching Garage Band does fix it. Would be nice to know why, and have a more stable (and reasonable) solution.
After pulling a brand new PowerBook 15" out of the box, I immediately noticed the problem of Flash movies playing video but not sound when deployed via Tiger. I refernced this site, and per the recommendations launched Garage Band, but the sound did not come back. I then went through a Restart, and still no sound. That evening I Shut Down my Mac resigned to the reality of having to go through a re-install of Tiger the next morning. Right before I started the process, I checked one last time to see if sound was active and to my surprise it was. I suspect that starting Garage Band did in fact resolve conflicting resources, however it appears that a hard restart (via powering off and back-on) is also necessary. Hope this helps.
Same problem with sound after installing iTunes update and windows media player. Garage band startup resolved the issue. Thanks all.
Fantastic job, prsnmn! I've encountered a similar problem as others in this group. One day, the sound in my Flash MX 2004 Pro environment went completely silent (Tiger 10.4.3, iMac G5). When I clicked the return key to preview my movie, the timeline marker would advance one frame, then halt. If I clicked the button again, it would advance one frame again but wouldn't budge or play any sounds. I scoured the web for a solution, but came up empty handed. Then I stumbled upon this post. I ran Garage Band 2 like you said, shutdown the machine (per cel3742's recommendation) and voila! everything is working fine. prsnmn and cel3742: I owe you both a thousand "thank you's"! :-)
Well Well! I had the same problem, I have a brand new iMac g5 and i was reading the forum and I just did what you told me to open garageband, I did and Wella! Flash sound is working very freaky but YEY!!! it works! Thanks
I've had this problem for a couple of months and, eventually, just learned to live with it. I tried installing Audacity but to no avail and I wasn't about to drop money on GarageBand. Until this morning when the super hot amazing guy who shares my bed found the solution: the Preferred Device for sound playback was Modem; he changed it to my sound card and problem solved. I'm on a PC running Win2K. Sounds like most of you are on Mac so I won't bother with instructions for making the change. I know you can figure it out. Good luck!
(Mac user) I had secondary symptom in that Windows Media Player lost sound too...it always gave me crap about a missing codec. I don't remember when i installed Audacity and it's relation to Flash not producing audio, but i do have Audacity. Running Garageband was the solution for me for Flash in web browsers, Flash Publish Preview and inside Flash as I'm building, as well as WMP now plays audio with no error message.
Will this Garage band thing fix the issue sound issue on XPpro also? Any help would be appreciated....
I found the Priblem FLASH 8 uninstall flash 8 then reinstall flash 7 then all games should work but for some reason i can n ot find flash 7 and flash 8 tries to always download now that is were i need help
Well, if you could run Garage Band on a WinMachine, I would imagine it would be worth a try... but since it is one of the free apps (a kick-ass app, i should mention) that comes with Mac OS X, I don't think this will be an option for you to try. Sorry... good luck. ~jonathan
:beer; Hi, folks. I am new to this forum but I think that you should start a new thread, rather than post your problems in somebody elses. You will be more likekey to find an answer and I will not get false alarms. Thanks.
:light; IT WORKED!! I OPENED GARAGE BAND AND MADE A LITTLE SONG- AND THEN FLASH PLAYER WORKED LIKE A CHARM
To fix this problem, do the following: 1. Open Applications 2. Open the Utilities folder. 3. Open "Audio Midi Setup" 4. Set Audio output to "Format: 44100.0 Hz" Screenshot: http://q45.spilky.com/gallery/d/2053-1/ams.jpg Quit the program, and Flash should work immediately.
