Flash 9 Installed but not detected
macromedia players flash:
I have installed flash player 9 on my computer. according to adobe's website it's installed however any time i go to a website requiring flash it says that i need to download flash player 9. i have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times yet the same symptoms occur. the weird thing is that there are two user accounts on my computer. one of them has no problem with flash and the other account does. i've tried setting up a new user account to see if flash would work on another account and it will not. all of the user accounts have administrator rights. i am really confused at this point and don't know what else to try. i am also running ie7 and this problem didn't start until i downloaded ie7. it seems that there are a lot of people out there having trouble with flash 9 and ie7. i have tried to email adobe about the issue but i have not heard back from them. does anyone have any suggestions. thanks for your help in advance!
Ditto here. I think i'm going to try a flash-less life until Adobe truly adresses this bug.
Same problem here. What site is causing the problem? I was using an old computer running Windows XP SP2 Home and just discovered Youtube. Really enjoyed it. Now I got a new computer with Windows XP Pro SP2 and can't get Youtube to work. This happened with the Macromedia version and with the Adobe FlashPlayer. Also, I'm using IE6. Is anyone listening to us? Can you hear us now, Adobe?!
I am having the EXACT same problem. I try and reload but it says I already have it... and can't do anything with YouTube or MSN or Comcast... This is irratating. Did anyone get a solution, by chance? Or is everyone just asking questions?
Whoah, looks like the flash issue I was having ISN'T limited to just me and my customer and collegues. I was able to unistall it, but all I could find to reisntall was flash 9 since all the popular sites are using it. Anyone experiencing crashes with flash 9?

I have the solution, delete the folowing folder from system32 :micromed After that reboot your pc and go to youtube.com. Klik a movie and you will get a messagge telling you that you need to have flash. Klik the link and install flash. the problem should now be solved :D
Add me to the list of frustrated IE and Adobe Flash Player users. When I go to Adobe and download the newest version of Flash Player, it says that it is installed. But various websites i.e. youtube, Cadillac, Home Depot all say I need the newest version of Flash Player. I have tried to delete what is on my machine but can't even find it in Add/Delete list on Control Panel! What gives? I use Road Runner and their home page is flash and I can view videos on the homepage?? Can they be running on another program such as RealPlayer? I am sooo frustrated because of not being able to view so many sites while paying a premium for Road Runner. Are you listening Adobe??? Can you hear me now????
I emailed adobe about this issue sometime last week. I have not heard a response. I called Microsoft's IE7 help number and they are trying to help me, but have yet to come up with an answer. They think that my user accounts were corrupted some how. I told them that doesn't make sense; when I create a new user account I cannot add flash player 9. They said they would research the issue and get back to me. If they come up with a solution I will let you know. I'm starting to think that it's not an IE7 issue, but an issue with Adobe Flash player 9, but since I haven't received a response from Adobe, I really can't say. I think Flash Player 9 may have corrupted my whole computer and I will probably have to start from scratch and re-build it. I will let you guys know if I find a solution before it comes to that. I know this stinks, but I'm glad it's not just me having problems.
Me too.....:disgust; also awaiting response about problem.... was convinced it was my PC till I found this thread! I even went back to my old ie but the flash problem stayed..... I blamed my kids on messing with the PC and all sorts, I am sooooo pi**ed off. An acknowledgement of the problem from 'those upstairs' would be good hey... don't ya agree?:wink;
Well, I have figured out that it is just youtube.com... but not youtube videos on other sites. That is to say that I cannot watch youtube.com files ON youtube.com, but if the videos are imported onto other sites, I don't have a problem. Music videos and other media are working... but youtube.com isn't. Can anyone help. PLEASE! OR JUST SHOW YOU KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM! Sheesh.
Hello there, just registered here. We have a serious incompatibility with IE 7 and Adobe FP 9 here! Even when downloaded to HD and IE being closed, FP9 will install _silently_ but not work afterwards! IE5.5 had this bug, IE 6 has it too and IE 7 hasn't it got fixed yet: the zone bug. I added adobe.com to Trusted Sites zone, set security to LOW (!) and really enabled each and everything, so as if I wanted to create a huge security hole in my PC. Went to adobe.com, tried to install flash player, but the install prompt "Do you want to run ...?" did NOT appear. So I removed Adobe.com from Trusted sites, closed every other IE window, put my system in serious security danger by enabling unsigned ActiveX for Internet (!) Zone, but voila, this time it worked!!! Trusted Sites zone seems to have a bug that no matter how insecurely you adjust your system, yet some ActiveX controls won't get installed.
:disgust; Just want to add that I have the same problem with IE7 and flash 9. If I want to see a page that requires flash, I have to use my firefox 5.0. Adobe, please let us know when there is a fix. Thanks
I've been having the same problem, too. But, what I finally "noticed" today (after removing Flash for the umpteenth time) was... when the flash player was being installed, it was automatically installing to Netscape (my default browser) and NOT Internet Explorer (I use both). Oddly enough, although Netscape is my default browser, I use IE most times. Sooooooooooooooo, I decided to try the following.... In my Netscape 7.2 Plug Ins folder were 3 icons for Flash. I copied and pasted them into Internet Explorer's (Ver 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2) Plug Ins folder. Restarted PC Visited adobe.com and page info indicated Flash Player was successfully downloaded and installed. It appears to be working fine now. Hope this helps. Good luck, B
Internet Explorer is my only default browser...
Hi abraxas, thanks for your reply. Sorry my solution didn't help you. Something tells me the answer is so obvious we've all missed it. This is just a thought so bear with me here... Did you check to see if "Set Program Access and Defaults" settings have not changed? B
You can place in on the list. So today I decided to upgrade my IE6 to IE7. Went to Youtube and could not see the video. So I decided to upgraded the Adobe Flash Player. Yet youtube keeps informing me that I don't have it and to install it in order to watch the video. So for the umpteenth time of installing and uninstalling I still get nothing! So I downloaded the Adobe Flash Player 9.0.21.75 Beta and still it doesn't work. I have Windows XP? I thought for one minute that it was something to do with the programs that I deleted today but the only programs I delete was: Google Earth,Adobe Photoshop 7.0, and Microsoft Money 2004. So have anyone found a solution to this problem?
I just had another go but this time also un-installed 'shockwave' from my pc 1st.... ... bingo!... I got the install instructions etc which I never got b4 and now it's okay.... Hope this helps ne1...:grin; Still didn't get a reply from 'those upstairs' tho...... :frown;
:sad; Same problem and none of the reported "fixes" works for me. Flash player was not recognized since about the time I started running IE7 Beta.
I also was using IE 6, then I tried IE 7 and was having the same problem. I would uninstall 7, went back to 6, retried 7 again...so forth. Everything seems to be working fine after I re-installed IE7 and Flash Player 9. I'm using IE 7 v. 7.0.5730.11 and Flash Player v. 9,0,16,0. Update IE 7 to the current version mentioned above and try the following, it helped me to get Flash Player 9 working: Issue After you complete the installation of the Flash Player ActiveX control in Internet Explorer for Windows, the post-installation test page shows a quotation mark (") where the test Flash movie should be. When you attempt to view other Flash content in Internet Explorer for Windows, you also see this missing content icon. Reason If you previously installed a later version of Flash, you may be prevented from reinstalling that same version or an earlier version. For example, if, while testing, you installed Flash Player 9,0,16,0, and then removed it, further installations of that same version may appear to complete but are not functional. This issue can cause the display of a quotation mark (") at the end of the installation where the Flash Player confirmation movie should appear. Solution Warning : The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage, which may require reinstallation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry then it's best to take your machine to a professional. If you choose to proceed, it is essential to create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information. To test for and resolve this issue: Choose Start > Run. Type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK to start the Windows Registry Editor. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\FlashPlayer\SafeVersions Right-click and delete the folder named Safe Versions. Using Internet Explorer for Windows, reinstall Flash Player 9 from the Flash Player Download page on the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/go/getFlashPlayer. I hope this helps.
I am having the same issue, after 2 weeks I finally got a response from someone at Adobe- their response is below, I tried it.. didn't work for me, maybe it will work for someone else. With regard to your query, I suggest that you download and run our latest uninstaller http://www.adobe.com/go/14157 Then download the exe installer: http://www.adobe.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_ie It is recommended that you temporarily disable your Antivirus, as it may interfere with the installation process. Verify if Flash player is working by going to this link. http://www.adobe.com/go/15507 If the above does not work, please ensure that you are running the installation as admin or as user with full permissions. If you are running on a restricted account, you may need to edit your system registry and allow certain entries to make Flash player work. http://www.adobe.com/go/19148 If you are running Windows XP service pack 2, there are certain settings that block Flash ActiveX. Try the technotes below: http://www.adobe.com/go/19479 http://www.adobe.com/go/19482 In case the above steps does not work or you do not wish to alter your system configuration. You can try non-ActiveX browsers such as Firefox or Netscape. Flash player should work fine there. Hope the above is of help.
I had the same problem, did everything mentioned on the Adobe website, re-applied SP2 and more. Flash worked well in Firefox and Opera. The problem was solved by the registering flash from a command prompt, see below: regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9.ocx I saw this tip in another message for returning to a previous version and tried it on flash9...with good results. Hope this helps. Didier.
Please give this a try. 5 out of the 6 including myself in this forum and other threads have tried it and it has worked. It is a standalone install of flashplayer 9.0.28.0. I opens the usual security box that shows it is a macromedia.com file. when I installed I had unistalled any FP that I had and I had Shockwave 10.9 installed. I think there is a co relationship between SW and FP some how. It is for IE only. I have IE6 and dial up and FP now works with no issues.
oops forgot to add the link info ..here it is
I had the same problem with 6.0. I upgraded to 7 and still doesn't work.
:disgust; First, get rid of IE7 via control panel - ad/remove programs, etcc.. As much as I like the tab feature and options improvements, it is NOT worth it. Now for the fix (at leasr for youtube.com and vh1.com): On http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=d9c2fe33 , you?ll find a link to download Flash Player 7r68. ?Windows Flash Player, Internet Explorer: Download (571 K) ? This link gives you an option to save the file. Save it to your HD and then open, run and , wala. Fixed! I don?t know if it?s IE7 or Flash 9, but the combo definitely is awful. Regards,
Ok I solved this by getting rid of Shockwave... first off I couldn't even install Flash 9, kept getting the ", but after uninstalling Shockwave it installed and seems to be working so far. Just got to work out how I can view Shockwave sites without using Shockwave now!!
Thank you very much. I have trying to get Flash 9 to work for weeks and notthing has worked until I tried the install on your post.
Hi, I had the same problems. I tried everything and am just short of reinstalling the entire operating system. BUT, I found a way that works!!!! It's not a complete answer but hey, it works! I've been trying it with the Internet Explorer browser. TRY installing the NETSCAPE browser. It's free. I tried it - it works! I didn't even have to reinstall the flash player. It read it from all my previous tries. Good luck, Regan
That's not a solution to the problem, its just avoiding it and hiding the symptoms. Obviously, using IE will avoid problems with Netscape and Firefox, using Firefox will avoid problems with IE and Netscape etc etc. Probably another anti-MS fanatic wanting to promote their favorite minority browser :) -- Jeckyl
Well, I have been having the same problem with the darn flash player. I finally found this forum and read through it. Someone said that when they downloaded flash it was going to their netscape browser even though netscape was not their default browswer so I went through my programs and tried lifetimetv.com/games with my Mozilla foxfire browser and it recgonizes the active x. It is not my default browser but I guess I am going to make it my default browser. I am tired of fooling with this darn problem. Hope this helps someone.
(your post is old, but this might help others w/ the same problem) Ok, what most likely happened is that u ran a reg. cleaner of some kind (and manipulated the flash player functions), contracted a streaming virus, and/or the flash player was afoul for some reason unknown to yourself. HERE IS THE SOLUTION!!!! (for windows) 1.Go to your sart tab 2. click on "run" 3. type in: SYSTEM32 (then press run/enter) 4. once the screen opens look for and open the tab/folder labeled: Macromed!!!!!! 5. then click on the flash floder/icon 6. inside there should be an icon to re-load/re-program/re-install.... do it and your problems are gone!!!! If that doesnt work, your pc is really mess up!!!!!! BEST OF LUCK!

I think I finally have a solution to this problem. It's been annoying me for the past few months. I'm 13 and like to use some of my spare time watching videos on YouTube. Then one day it told me that Flash Player 9 needed to be installed. So I did that and from then on I couldn't view Flash anywhere. It kept telling me I had to install Flash Player. I kept on trying to find a way to fix it and tried all the stuff mentioned here but nothing worked for me. Then I found this complete standalone installer that finally fixed the problem ! This is what you should do... 1. Download the un-installer and un-install Flash Player. 2. Then restart your computer. 3. Go to the Adobe website and install Flash Player again. The address is below. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFl ash&promoid=BIOW 4. Next, download the standalone installer. It can be found from this address, just copy and paste it into your browser. http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_f lash_player_active_x.msi 5. Done ! Go and check whatever you wanted to play to see if Flash works again. I hope this helps some people, it sure helped me. Regards.
The install process for the new 9.0 release of Flash Player, unlike that of previous releases, does NOT grant all users appropriate access to the various Flash registry items. It grants access ONLY to the administrative user who performs the install. Thus, ALL other users on the same machine can NOT even USE Flash Player 9.0. (That is, most web sites won't recognize that it's been installed.) I used Adobe's uninstall program to remove those registry items (the uninstall must be run by the administrative user who installed Flash Player 9, NOT by any other administrative user), and was able to install Flash Player 9.0 using a different administrative account than the original one I used, but this means the original administrative user no longer has access to Flash Player. This is NOT true of Flash Player 8.0, which is installed on our other two machines and works fine with multiple users because the Flash registry items all have appropriate access for all users, access granted by the Flash Player 8.0 install. (That is, any administrative user can update Flash Player 8.0 and any limited user can USE Flash Player 8.0.) Let's be clear about this. If you view any of the Flash Player registry items after 9.0 is installed, only one user has ANY rights to the registry items. Other users, including administrative users, cannot even VIEW the registry items. For Flash Player 9.0 to be designed so that its install grants access to the Flash registry items to just a single user, and thereby makes Flash Player unusable for all other users on the same machine, is a step backward from previous releases and a fundamental flaw that needs addressing.
Hi, There is a patch to correct this hidden on Adobe site but I cant find it again. The file is - flashplayer_9_ax debug. If you can't find it email me and I will send it via email attachment, it is a very small file. K.C.

I believe I have this problem solved after being on this computer for over a week! just get Netscape it has plug ins. get the flash player from there. good luck everyone. if it stops working I am going to throw this computer out my window! have a great day everyone. :-)
Looks like one of my kids tried to install IE7 and now I too have problem. Solution has been found at the following site (apprently a wide spread problem): http://www.angryharry.com/esproblemwithflash.htm Note: Best to download the uninstaller and ensure no programs are loaded including any browser and run uninstall. Reboot machine and go back to Adobe site and re-install Flash Player 9. Good luck.:smile;

:beer; This problem has bugged me in the past and I have discovered one solution that may help. First, a little history: I upgraded from Flash Player 8 to 9 in 2006 and, though installed properly, it would not show flash content at my ISP's home page. Screwing around with some other applications, it began working as advertised. Earlier this month, I removed a small application (not related to Flash Player 9) from my PC and FP9 quit working again. Doing some detective work, I discovered that it is related to VB script issues (these do NOT show up in the Windows "Events" file! "Start + Administrative Tools + Events"). This is how I discovered what happened to me and what you might do to get FP9 working again: I downloaded the MicroSoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) tool at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx (I highly recommend this program for an occasional check-up for your Windows PC) I ran the program and it "hung." Reviewing the "Event" log, I discovered the "Error Code: 2738" associated with the MBSA failure. Searching the Internet, I discovered that this error is a VBScript run time error (see: http://www.appdeploy.com/msierrors/detail.asp?id=273). Using the link at this web-site will send you to - ugh - MicroSofts Windows Script 5.6 web site ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86E B-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en). To fix your FP9 problem, simply download and install this VB scripting program and you will probably see your FP9 problem fixed! If it doesn't work, use Adobe's Flash Player removal tool ( http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157) then reinstall FP9 (make sure you follow ALL their instructions doing this. Reboot and use a Registry Cleanup tool to make sure everything is clean - http://iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html). Then reinstall Windows Script 5.6. If this still doesn't work, then you're on your own.
Have you try the adobe Flash player with active X
I can verify that the registry problems explains by TechWtr are likely the cause. I downloaded the uninstaller and reinstalled, and it works fine in IE7 only when logged in under the admin account that installed it, just as TechWtr said. You'd think by now big companies like Adobe would have a grasp on microsoft user accounts and get with the program, but apparently we are all still expected to run everything under one insecure admin account aka the days of windows 95. i'll wait for the patch instead of mucking up my registry.
hi I had to make this account to be able to voice my problem, im having the same error as all you are but I have something else compiled ontop of it, for some reason the uninstaller wont work either >.< gets up to 38% and freezes, I have to get into task manager to close it its so annoying!
Wasn't going to take the time to fill out the info in order to reply, but felt others may benefit. I too, have had many of the same problems with Flash 9. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, uninstalled Shockwave, tried to install Flash 9 again, rebooted my computer I don't know how many times, followed all instructions on Adobe support, tried a few of the other suggestions on this forum, took it to a computer science grad, etc. etc. and nothing worked. On November 20, Reproman66 posted a link for a standalone install of Flash 9. Thanks!!!! In the span of 1 minute I had Flash 9 installed!
I tried it and during the installation I have this message : Error 1904 Module C:\WINNT\System32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9b.ocx failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel. ahahahaha... so can someone be my support personnel and tell what to do please ? :) I won't live without Flash Player :'(

I was having the same problem and even posted in a few forums without luck. Today I was trying to install iTunes and I received an error message: "iTunes could not be installed because Visual Basic Script (VBScript) is not installed or has been disabled. Make sure VBScript is installed, turn off script blocking in anti-virus and personal firewall software, re-register VBScript, and then install iTunes." I found the solution for that problem and is turns out I finally found a solution for my problem with FLASH too. Maybe it tries to detect the Flash application using VBscript and somehow when I updated my windows one of the programs disabled it or unistalled the right version. I followed these steps: 1- Downloaded the latest version of vbscript at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en 2- Then I followed a suggestion from one of the post: go to start press run....type: regsvr32 vbscript.dll I dont know which one did it for me because I did both before testing with a site that i had troubles with www.toyota.com After I followed these steps I was able to install iTunes and see the toyota site. Hope it works for you!
