Hi all,

As you're probably more than aware of, we are, as developers, in a transition
phase from AS2 to AS3 and FP8 to FP9. I am well aware of the great new features
of in AS3 and in the AVM2, but need to be able to convince my clients to go
with FP9. Please help me list some of the key features as you see them.

Apart from up to 10X optimization in performance, as well as the performance
increase through E4X, please list any and all features that would, from a
clients perspective, be a unique selling point.

Thank you!

Thanks for your input Jeckyl.

There's no doubt performance increase is the main factor. Of course other
features such as full-screen support through the FLV format is another
compelling point.

On the note of Flash player penetration, I am not that worried. With my
projects in mind, no release would happen before the end of Q1 next year, and
looking at the track record for FP8 we should be well in the 80- percentages
for FP9 at that point. Inline installation has surely benefited the community!

If anything else comes up, please do respond.

Thanks.

BTW: Note that some difference are due to the version of Flash Player you
are playing in, rather than SWF publish format version. So some features
that may appear as version 9 features may also apply to SWF8 or earlier
content when played in the FP9 player (for example. some performance
improvements will be for any SWF content played in the new player .. there
MAY even be improvements in the AVM1 with FP9)

I'll watch this thread with interest, as I'd like to also hear of any
experience or knowledge people have of new SWF9 format using AS3.

I can't think of anything other than performance and (for the short term)
some script security, until the flash decompilers are updates for AS3
decompile.

Targetting FP8 is a much better right now for web sites in general, because
FP8 has a better market penetration than FP9.

If you're doing intratnet work on RIA with heavy use of scripting, or you
want ot use Flex, then FP9 won't be much of an advantage.
