Hi, all I'd really like to see an official message from Adobe concerning the issue with Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE. Surely they must have received a lot of messages from disgruntled users. I work for an online newspaper and we have several hundred thousand page impressions every day. And for lots of users our front page causes the Flash player to crash. It's practically impossible to isolate which banner ad(s) that will lead to a crash. My theory is that there are certain ActionScript commands that are handled in a different manner in the new player, while swfs that contain only animation will work. -+ Asp +-
I always have the same error message, which bumps me off the internet...flash9b.ocx. So far I have not seen any fix for this listed. I constantly uninstall and then install this lousy program. How can I just go back to the previous version 8? Im sure it works still....Can I get the previous version download somehere ?
I'm glad to see it's not just my machine! I just installed the new version the other day and keep getting an error message that flash.ocx cannot be found. Frustrating. When I get home from work tonight I'll try going back to version 8 and see if that works.
I have the problem with flash 7, 8 and 9, tried them all. I now know that the problem in my case is related to my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE but I'm positive that Adobe should fix something in flash player because this is getting crazy!
I think mine is finally fixed. I tried going back to version 8 but kept getting a message that flash.ocx could not be found when it was time for my screensaver to come on. Today I changed screensavers and the desktop picture, and it seems to be working with version 8. I'm staying away from version 9 for as long as I possibly can.
I *finally* fixed mine, but it took a video card swap to do it. I am still wondering if it has to do with drivers for certain video cards, because ever since I switched from an ATI Radeon X600 to an nVidia geForce 6600 (all PCI-e) I haven't gotten the crash. I have had all the pages running that used to crash my system since I switched the card. *shrug* Food for thought. I know its not feasible for people to change their video cards to suit Flash player, but this is my discovery on my personal machine. -Katte UCS Utah
I am having same issue... and i am running Display adapter - ATI Technologies inc. Radeon x300 serious... along with ide ata/atapi controllers - nvidia corp - nvidia nForce4 ADMA Will have to try replacing my display adapter think have extra one around here with something different. Will let ya know. Thanks for the Idea Katte
after installing flash 9b, kept getting message flash.ocx could not be found when screensaver attempts to start. in windows\system32\macrom\flash, i copied flash9b.ocx and renamed it to flash.ocx now no problems
It appears that some screen savers (electric sheep is one) or programs look for a "flash.ocx" instead of "flash9b.ocx" and this causes the problem. SOLUTION: Copy: "...windows/system32/macromed/flash/flash9b.ocx" Paste: it as a copy of flash9b.ocx then... RENAME: the COPIED FILE to "flash.ocx" IMPORTANT: do not delete the original flash9b.ocx just make a copy of named "flash.ocx" This "fix" has worked a lot of people that have programs or screen savers that look for the original flash.ocx file which it can't fine causing in some cases for I.E. to close and the resultant error message.
If the above solution works for you PLEASE send me a Private Message letting me know so I can pass this info on to other forums. Thank you, Jerry Ellis
i have a problem, every time im in my game www.gaiaonline.com in towns, it doesnt happen right away but little while after it says something went wrong and that flash was i think part of the problem and closes my internet, could some one please help me>?
non of them work -.- okay here is a url link

I'll try it and hope it shall fix the problem. But I don't understand this: This error occurs allready since end of January or begin of february 2006 on my computer, visiting a lot of sites. I spent allready very much of time trying to solve followed problems. I wrote allready an email to Adobe support and got not any perheaps only formal politeness answer, not to mention any suggestion of trying to fix it. I don't know what does this strategy of Adobe mean :/
[q]Originally posted by: sasukekid i don't have Flash9b.ocx[/q]It seems you don't have the last Flash Player 9 but only some older version. [q]Originally posted by: sasukekid paste it into where?[/q]Into the same directory where is the flash9b.ocx I tried it and it works but not everywhere, there are still some sites where IE crashes. IMHO there were also some other names of this file as eg. flash9.ocx in the development history of the program versions. I made one copy more renamed to flash9.ocx and following I could reach some sites more which I couldn't do before but there are still some sites crashing the IE remaining. I would like to know the complete list of all names of this file during the whole history of the program. But BTW: It's only the second best solution to must make such big amount of copies of the same file (2'210 KB per file!) for correct working of such standard everywhere used program :/
1. Drag and drop Flash9b.ocx into any directory, C:\ eg., pressing the Ctrl key on the keyboard simultanously (the file shall not be moved but copied). 2. Rename Flash9b.ocx to Flash.ocx there. 3. Drag and drop Flash.ocx back into the directory, where the original Flash9b.ocx occures.
okay i did it and it said i needed to install it, and now im back to my problem
We've been seeing a lot of crashes with IE 6 and 9.0.28 no mention of missing Flash.ocx though.
Hi all, sorry for my English. I had problem with Flash9b.ocx and Flash Games on Internet. Sometimes fall down. I changed Flash9b and in this time i have Flash8d. Games are ok, but ICQ5.1 do same error encountered in flash8d.ocx. Do you know, what shall I do? Many thanks, Tomas

Make sure all your drivers for your sound and video cards are up to date, and in some cases even your printer and web cam drivers. Manufactures put out new drivers to fix bugs, improve performance, and increase compatibility with other hardware and software. Often the combination of the web browser and the Flash Player can trigger a fairly complex code path. Anything out of sync can cause a cascade of problems that eventually crash the player or browser. If you have made sure everything is updated and your hardware is working ok, you should contact technical support for further assistance. -Ken
[q]Originally posted by: sasukekid well i checked most of my stuff and its all been up to date[/q] Have you made sure you crash is not being caused by a screen saver? Have you contacted Technical support for assistance? www.adobe.com/support/contact
I am running Windows XP & using ATI Radeon 9600 video card. I'm using a Windows screensaver. My computer freezes whenever I i visit certain web pages. This has been a source of endless frustration. I have reinstalled Windows, changed browsers, uninstalled and reinstalled the player numerous times and I'm still experiencing the same old freezes. Today, I was at the Microsoft website and could not access my e-Learning page because it required the Flash player. When I installed the player and went back to site, the computer froze. I haven't gotten any error messages.
OK, So at my work we have two NW8240 laptops with ATI graphics cards, both are running Vista Ultimate and nothing else is installed except flash on one it works perfectly fine on the other every page with flash causes an error??? we have tried rebuilding and all sorts and always the same result. I am a flex developer and this is getting very frustrating that i cant even view my own work??????
I have had the same problems. Flash9b.ocx crashes in IE 7 alllllll the time, a couple of months ago i just uninstalled flash. I cant view youtube but who cares!!! I have noticed more banners dont load (haha) and some websites are harder to navigate but it is a small price to pay to not have my computer crash all the time. I have dual nivida cards and tech support told me to uninstall them, i was like are you crazy?? Anyway, they kept saying it was nvidia but i only have problems with one program on my comp and it is flash

Hi to all. I had the same problem with the dll flash9b.ocx....just were going to became crazy. Tryied everything was possible. Now reading replays here I tried to replace that damned thing with a flash8.ocx which I luckily had on my daughter pc.... I just renamed the old dll to flash9bold.ocx ( but i think you can choose what you want), put in the macromed/flash folder the flash8.ocx, named it as flash9b.ocx and IT WORKS! I had really big problems to enter in www.stickcam.com, sometimes problems with flash games, and flv in youtube too. Now I have sent this dll to my server so I DON'T MISS IT!!!
I was having problems with IE7 crashing when trying to run Flash Player in certain sites. After much uninstalling, reinstalling, googling, etc. over a long period of time, I found that I, in fact, was the culprit. I had installed Comodo's VerificationEngine program and it was limiting the sites when I tried to run them. After uninstalling that program, I have had no problems with IE7 crashes due to Flash Player sites. If you are having problems, you might want to check your installed programs to determine if one or more of them are not compatible. Sometimes, we create our own problems and don't even realize it. Hope this might help at least just one person. Good luck to all.
I too have the same problem. I develop games for a large company. I haven't seen this on any of the other games, except for one particular game we have. This has happened for the last year. although the error message changes to flash9b along with the upgrade of the player. Im 100% sure its not to do with other factors like my screensaver/video card etc, as all the other games are fine. This is also the same for the people company wide. Is it because this game does a lot of polling, or perhaps because it uses alot of content (the file memory size in IE can get quite high). Is it a certain bit of actionscript? It happens sporadically. Sometimes you get it, sometimes not. Im not too sure where to send my query on the contact page for adobe? I know in the past ive emailed regarding other problems but they fell on deaf ears. Which puts me off contacting. Is this a known problem which adobe is addressing? Is there an offical response? I dont want this issue to put people off using Flash/Flash player. Cheers, Dave
Hello Speedy d, When you have problem to report you should contact technical support www.adobe.com/support/contact . They can walk you through troubleshooting steps and collect information that may be helpful. It can be more difficult to help in cases like yours where the source code and original developer is unavailable for questions because you may not be in a position to implement workarounds. However it can help us to narrow down problems we are unable to reproduce in house. I hope that helps, -Ken
Going back to the original start of this topic reguarding Flash9b.ocx crashing in IE 7... I see it crash every day. Here is a great way to reproduce it... Log into launch.com. Play a radio station or music video. Now try to rate music by clicking on an album or artist in your music player (radio station or music video). Flash9b.ocx will crash usually in less than 30 minutes. The most annoying part of this error is that IE7 will close and you lose everything you are doing.

[/q] As Ken posted earlier, support requests go through the web portal on http://www.adobe.com/support/ If you're the Flash developer, use http://www.adobe.com/support/flash. Phone and email support are available. If you're a Flash Player end user, email support is available at http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer. Now, as of 4/17/07 we are seeing a problem in which some Flash Player emails are being redirected to Customer Service. We're working to address that, so please reply back, mention my name and ask that your case be directed to Technical Support. If you get an unsatisfactory reply please post to my new thread (see below). Also note that a new version of Flash Player (9.0.45.0) released last week. So if you're having crashing issues please be certain to update to that version and retest. If you still crash, do open a support case. The tech support agents should request detailed system and crash information. Additionally the new installer has a logging function (as well as more detailed info about the install that you can see while it's installing). We realize many Windows users are having installation problems and hopefully the updated installer will help resolve those issues. Finally, we have been aware for some time that the first levels of Flash Player email support were problematic. For North America we have moved that function to another team and we believe the service should be vastly improved. However, I will start an open thread for direct complaints about the SUPPORT EXPERIENCE (not technical items..) where you can relay your experience.
And the crash rears its ugly head on me yet again. Fist time I have seen it since the new installation of video card and full reinstall of WinXPPro w/SP2. I have all the crash data in raw text format if anyone over ther at adobe is interested in taking a look at it. It is still selectively crashing IE windows, this time around it got youtube.com, livejournal.com and myspace.com while leaving up the sindows that I was using from nVidia.com, intel.com, alienware.com and this site which I tried to log into before the crash info disappeared. Current installation of flash is 9.0.28.0. Love some help on this one, guys, Its getting to be past annoying, and its hard to work this way. Granted those particular sites are not all that important, however, last time, it made my job a nightmare. Katte UCS Utah UCSUtah.com
I updated to flash 9.0.45.0. We'll see if that changes anything. One thing I would like to add about the newest fla sh crash I am experiencing is that it has an effect on how certain applications react until my computer is rebooted. For instance, when Flash crashed earlier on me today, it not only interfered with the way that flash applications ran in IE after that, but it also cut out the sound and caused stuttering in the video on Power DVD 6 5.1. I have checked all drivers, services and registry files to try and get a clue about that one, but I show 0x000000 as an error code in the system event log, and all drivers are up to date, all hardware tests good. All services belong to Windows and my resident virus scanner, audio card, and MSN messenger. Thanks for your help in advance! -Katte UCS Utah UCSUtah.com
Still getting crashes regardless of what version of Flash I am using in IE6, right now I am on 9.0.45.0. Any resolution coming soon? -Katte UCS Utah
Thanks for the feed back. Bentley Wolfe, im still not sure where to go for help. Im a Developer, but when i look at getting technical help regarding the flash player, it only seems to regard installation. And i dont want to take out a help package for a problem. Could you provide steps, or a direct email address for contact. Im more than willing to help anyone form adobe get to the bottom of this by providing what information i can. Many thanks, Dave
Speedy, if you're a licensed Flash Authoring user then you have a different avenue to get support. Flash Player support is installer only/email only (but generally install problems are the worst of the issues). In some cases I realize that's not optimal, but those are the limits available for a free download and I have to obey those limits. Flash Authoring support is available via email/phone at http://www.adobe.com/support/flash. If you're unable to test your Flash authored content then you have a problem with Flash, and you are entitled to two complementary support cases. So, open a case. And if at any point you feel you received less than satisfactory support on the case let me know. http://www.adobe.com/support/programs/flash/?tab:contact=1
Yeah, I tried that a few times over the last couple of months, but I never heard anything back..... *sigh* Thats why I took to becoming annoying in the forums. -Katte UCS Utah UCSUtah.com
Argh.. Can you PM me any case numbers, customer ID number, email address... anything I could use to dig up those cases? I mentioned this on another thread, but thought I'd repeat it here.. a few weeks ago we moved the first level of Flash Player email support to another team (just because of issues like this). There has already been a marked improvement in responsiveness. So we're working on it..
I never got any type of number, in fact, my email account reflects when I signed on to here, but I have yet to recieve an answer from anyone. This problem is something I have been battling since October. To give you the short short version, I reinstalled windows, changed my video card, and uninstalled and reinstalled IE 6, used IE 7, Opera, and Mozilla. All with the same results, over multiple computers. I work as a technition for a company called UCS Utah, where I have seen this also on customer computers. Hell, even my Mac does it in Safari, OS10X. I was told in the beginning when this first started happening that it was something I was doing wrong (basically) from rafiquel mansy (pardon if the name is not spelled right ) when I first took to the forums. I now have seen a large contingent of people with this same problem. Trouble is, most people are not going to find your peer to peer forum, or even in fact make a complaint here, since the average computer owner does not know that a level of support such as this exists. Instead, they bring these computers to the shop and have us try to fix it. We can find nothing amiss in the registry, although, I did try that regedit that was suggested on both my home machine and tech machine. There has to be some kind of common denominator here, and I for one, would like to help find it if I can. -Katte UCS Utah UCSUtah.com
Done, and done. Thanks.:) -Katte UCS Utah
I got a reply from my case, but none of the answers were satisfactory, or at least they were things i have already tried: The Flash9b.ocx error is hard to pin down. as: version issues, security settings with program (Flashplayer) etc. Easiest solution version of the FLashplayer so yor customers version. After that see that Active X controls their IE security settings. Also make sure not running the IE 7 Beta but a full version verison such as IE6. Hope it helps. I can not reply to this address, so what is the best way to go about escalating this if i would like more help? And what exactly should be the Active X settings? As the applicaiton can work for a long while without getting this crash. Many thanks, Dave
Hey, The case number for this was 172586455. Many thanks,
I emailed support with this same problem last week, the case # is172586688. No reply at all. This problem did not start until latest version of Flash 9 installed 2 weeks ago. I have updated all drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled IE7 (full version). Screen saver is not the problem. There does not seem to be any one banner or page that keeps causing the crash. Thanks in advance for any help, Vikki
At this point, I have totally removed FlashPlayer plugins from all web browsers on my computer and installed a killbit for the ActiveX control for Flash Player (and Shockwave Player) into the Windows registry. Flash Player 9 (flash9b.ocx) crashes every browser I have tried (including the antiquated Netscape 4.8, which does not rely on the ActiveX control, per se). Installing previous version seems not to be effective, as whenever you browse a page that relies upon FlashPlayer 9 specifically, and the animation includes FlashPlayer 9-specific Active Scripting controls without proper version checking, the software for the latest ActiveX control is downloaded (and installed, given your permission). I never had the problem with previous versions (up to version 8), and locally produced animations work effectively with FlashPlayer 9 as long as the Active Scripting component is not called upon. I have tried various settings for FlashPlayer to aleviate the problem, but certain advertisements always seem to crash the browsers and render the pages useless and unviewable. Without the killbit, the pages always try to download the latest version of FlashPlayer. Unfortunately, the killbit renders previous versions unuseable. It seems like a renewal of the late 1990's when Flash was abused by advertisers to a point that most well-intentioned users disabled Flash content to get the information they wanted without the excessive downloads. Pages that rely on Flash content are again non-viewable in any browser on my machine. I have even removed the Flash content creation programs from my computer until Adobe fixes this problem. While not all Flash content seems to kill the browsers, those that rely on version 9 do.
[q]Originally posted by: VSnider I emailed support with this same problem last week, the case # is172586688. No reply at all.[/q] VSnider... I show that you got a 'right to service' reply from Customer Service on 04/25/2007. Ideally that wouldn't happen and these Flash Player cases would go directly to the support team, which is something we're working on fixing. So it seems that CS did the right thing and sent you over to the Flash Player support team. But, they assigned it to the wrong product and nobody saw it. Very sorry about that. I'll get somebody on it. What should happen is they support agent should provide you with steps on how to generate a Flash Player crash log. We need a bunch of those logs to figure out where we're crashing. In case they don't, here's how you do it (Windows only): 1. First open notepad or another text editor 2. Create a text file with one line: CrashLogEnable=1 3. Save the file as: c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\mms.cfg 4. Generate a crash in the browser and record all URLs open at the time (windows or tabs) 5. Open up a command line prompt. Select Start > Run and type cmd in the dialog. 6. Type cd "Local Settings\Temp" at the command line prompt. Be sure that Local Settings is in quotation marks. 7. Type dir *.mdmp at the command line prompt. These are the log files that are to be sent to adobe. Ideally we need all of the following: 1. crash log 2. dxdiag (machine specs ? instructions below) 3. URL 4. web browser 5. OS 6. Flash Player version How to get your dxdiag: 1. Select Start > Run 2. Type in ?dxdiag? 3. Save as a text file
Hi Bently, What is going to happen to my case? Its something i would like to persue with some speed, as i have quite a bit of pressure at work now to resolve it. Do i need to open another case? Will i be contacted? Also, this flash error log thing. I will try this, and see if i can get a report. Its just annoying that i dont know how to replicate it all the time. Thats the frustrating thing, so pinning it down is very difficult. Thanks, Dave
I cant seem to find any logs when i do get an error? I search for *.mdmp but nothing? Im i doing it right? Im following the instructions. Cheers,

Thats the frustrating thing, so pinning it down is very difficult. Dave[/q] Because your case is outside of North America I cannot work on it myself (some crazy international law I can't remember the name of...) So i've asked my peer in EMEA to take it on personally. I do see that you did get a response from the EMEA team (and yes, I can clearly see that wasn't helpful.. part of the big picture fixes I'm working on for Flash Player). The case is waiting for you to reply to that. So you wrote previously about not being able to reply. Did that mean you weren't able to reply to the address the agent mailed you from??? Let me know so I can have that checked out.. But.. we absolutely MUST get a Flash Player crash log and the other information I've mentioned on this thread. We can't really do anything without that. And unfortunately steps to replicate are also an important part of the process. It's like fixing the car.. if you can't make it happen or describe it clearly we have no idea where to start. Also in this case, since your company is developing Flash games you could have had your developers open a support case for the authoring tool. That would be helpful if they could find a consistent spot where a particular game crashes.. So I see in your next post that you got a crash but aren't seeing any logs. Here are some modified instructions that might work better. Also, have you turned on any Windows logging? Those might also be helpful.. Enabling log file generation In order to allow log files to be created by the Flash Player you must first enable this option by placing the string, CrashLogEnable=1, into your mms.cfg file. Which means you must HAVE an mms.cfg file. It is not created by the Falsh Player install, it is a simple text file you must create yourself. Instruction for creating and modifying the MMS.cfg file can be found here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/flash_player_9_security.pdf. Here is a similar note regarding modification of auto-update that identifies the location of the mms.cfg file. http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=16701594 Once mms.cfg is created and CrashLogEnable=1 then a Flash Player crash -should- generate a crash log. Locating log files Open a command line prompt. (From the Start Menu choose Run? then type cmd in the dialog. Type cd "Local Settings\Temp" at the command line prompt. Make sure that you enclose the Local Settings in quotation marks. Type dir *.mdmp at the command line prompt. These are the log files that are to be sent to adobe. If this fails to create a crash log then we're going to have to find another way to figure out what's going on. That's where 'steps to replicate' are going to be needed.
My browser is crashing several times a day this week. It would be nice if a fix is released this weekend.
I'm also in the boat of following the step-by-step for creating a log file, having Flash crash (I have 9.0.45.0...flash9c.ocx...took all of 5 minutes after install for the first crash), but no error log is generated. I'm a web developer who also happens to do a lot of web browsing, and this crashing business (and I'm really trying not to be profane, but I am so incredibly upset at how much time this thing has wasted) is causing me massive headaches. Does the machine need to be rebooted or something to get this log file to get generated? Does Vista's UAC locking have something to do with the file not getting generated?
I've totally disbled Flash on my PC by adding a registry value. Since I did this, Internet Explorer has been rock solid. Before that, IE crashed about once a day. Add a "Compatibility Flags" value of 0x400, as described in this article: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/noflash.htm This will totally disable all Flash, including download prompts, everything. It's as though Flash never existed. It's wonderful. I don't use Flash for any important applications - it was only used by advertisments on web pages. I can happily live without these; but I couldn't live with IE contstantly crashing. So I am enjoying life without Flash, and I am much happier for it. Before I disabled Flash I sent several crash dumps to Adobe; hopefully they can determine the cause and fix it. If/when that problem is fixed, I might consider re-enabling Flash on my machine; but not before. Cheers Andrew McLaren
I dont know if this helps, but I connect via a Sprint Novatel U720. Flash apps ALWAYS kick me off. I run with an open Task Manager to watch my CPU usage. When I'm using anything Flash (e.g. watching anything on youtube.com) I can watch my CPU usage fluctuating upwards. It inevitably hits the ceiling (100%). After about 5-10 seconds, my Novatel shuts down, disconnects, and often has to be closed and reopened. If I pause the video then CPU usage drops back down. When I resume play, it ramps back up. I have found that I can generally watch a video AND stay connected if I just pause the video for a second everytime it maxes out my CPU, but it is very frustrating trying to watch Flash video content while pausing every 5 seconds :( I have also found that this is MUCH more likely when I have multiple tabs with Flash content. Only Flash kicks off my Novetel, nothing else does it. Even if another program maxes out my CPU, I stay connected. But Flash videos ALWAYS disconnect me. By the way, I also get IE7 crashes caused by FP9 :] Jim
just wanna say that i had huge problems with youtube crashing and showing ie and flash error until i installed the beta flash version and plugin for ie looks like its finally working no errors yet and ie dont die like before every 2 minutes i hope this works for every one to:) ive installed the first two http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html
"Uppdatera flash - minska krascher i IE7 Adobe har släppt en ny version av Flash, version 9.0.45, eller Flash9c som den också kallas. Den nya versionen är betydligt stabilare än tidigare och gör inte att Internet Explorer 7 kraschar i tid och otid då sidor med flashinnehåll besöks. " This above can be read in a Swedish IT Magazine. Rough translation.: Update to the new version of Flash. As it is well known that the IE7 crashes all the time it might be better with the new Flash version. My IE7 crashes all the time when I use my Flash Player. I have updated to new version of Flash and have a full version of IE7. Sometimes it freeze the PC completely. It is a very bad advertisment for Adobe and Flash Player and their inability to solve the problems.
Dear Mr. Wolfe (or anyone else) For those of us not in the US and using a variety of text formats (ANSI, ISO, SHIFT-JIS, UNICODE), when creating the mms.cfg file, do we need to beware of anything? Is it possible that the wrong text file format will result in the logs not being created as several people above have stated? I assume ANSI is the correct format....
I have been getting many IE7 crashes with the flash9.ocx message. After trying many things I changed my IE7 Phishing Filter setting. It was set to "turn off automatic website checking", and I changed it to "Disable" (what's the difference between these settings anyway?). The problem disappeared! Could the answer really be as simple as that or was it just a coincidence? Can anyone else report similar results?
Ditto died 3 times in the last hour or so; no changes to hardware or OS that i am aware of .... I have added driver for a blackberry curve this morning ... but running fine all day .. wit the exception of the last hour or so
Oh yea ... I was using XM Radio control .. which does use flash 9 player.

When you say "died" for example, are you getting the typical application crash message followed by the "send information to Microsoft" dialogue or are you getting an MIE dialogue or what exactly? Or is the the whole thing locking up? I am tracking down a persistent bug that is either in Flash Player or MIE which causes an MIE add-on error with flash9(b,c).ocx and a straitforward application crash in MIE with flash9d.ocx (basically skips the add-on error message). Whether this is related to what you are experiencing I have no idea at this point. I am also following this thread and if we do find the actual source of the error will try to give some feedback. By the way, do you happen to know if the applications that are causing these crashes are perhaps running on the AVM 1 or 2 engine (or, in other words, made in AS 2.0 or AS 3.0)? Could they possibly be interacting with javascript? Are they possibly using getURL()? these are sort of technical questions but even your conjecture would be helpful... thanks
Well folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but yesterday night I went out and replaced my RAM memory. Not that I think it matters, but I went from 1 gig to 2. Anyhow, since it has been in my cpu, I have yet to encounter that ***damn crash error I used to see with regularity. I don't exactly know if maybe I'm just getting lucky to this point or not but my IE seems to have stabilized. Just thought y'all might be interested in hearing that. Do with it what you will.......
A screenshot of the crash can be found here: http://www.h-avis.no/files/div/flashcrash/error_flash.jpg If you try the online newspaper http://www.h-avis.no/ in IE you'll most likely experience a crash. It might take just a few minutes, or maybe 24 hours...There's no way to pinpoint which of the ads on that page that will lead to a crash. That's a big problem in itself, because it is next to impossible to predict when a crash will occur. The site crashes in both IE6 and IE7, but not in any other browser as far as I know. The player version is 9, both old 9s and the newest one (9.0.47.0). I don't know if version 8 or earlier will lead to a crash. My theory is that the sheer amount of ads on the same page is simply too much for the user's computer and will lead to a crash. Currently we have 18 Flash ads on our front page. In Firefox it seems like the player is not active unless you actually can see the ad on the screen, meaning that not all ads will start playing at the same time. In IE on the other hand, the player is active even in those ads that are further down on the screen and which are currently not visible before you scroll down. So Adobe, any information from you will be appreciated. Aspar
I have recent had the same problem with Flash9b.ocx shutting down my i-e 6.0 on my computer which is running windows 98 second edition and on my friends computer running windows xp and on his dad's wife's computer running windows 98.. I then went into regedit and completely wiped out any information regarding adobe activeX and flash player and that basically solved the problem and now when I go to yahoo mail and an add pops up asking me to always trust adobe flash player system I hit no instead of yes ot install and I no longer have the problem of i-e crashing on me.. I hope that adobe solves this problem soon.

I will have to take a look at the site and see if I can figure out how similar it is to the application we are testing. At the moment we are suspicious of the getURL() command inside of AS 2.0 used in conjunction with IE javascript's window open and close commands. Also, we notice that crash frequency increases with computer user (in other words, using your computer to do stuff... if you just let it sit there it doesn't crash). Don't hold your breath waiting for Adobe to fix this. Report the bug and the URL. We are trying to get support from them but it's like pulling teeth from a badger--slow, difficult, and mutually painful.
I have to say I'm absolutely floored that this is still an issue. 3 seperate PC's, running 3 different OS's with 3 different video cards. Go to weather.com, go to their interactive map and click on the play button. That is the quickest way to make it happen. However it happens all the time other places also. Every single one of them crashes due to flash. C'mon Adobe, it's been months. This is really quite ridiculous. Why are people still using Flash? Adobe has clearly not been a good caretaker of the product Macromedia worked so hard to make a household name. Shame on you,
Hello ! Iv'e been plagued with this ocx crash in both XP Pro and Vista flash9c.ocx or flash9d.ocx 00000005 appcrash. Think I finally have found the cure and should share it here. In Vista it seems flashplayer install creates a bogus registry entry at : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{D27CDB6B-AE6D-11CF-96B8-44455354000 0}\1.0\0\win32 Vaulue i had in a completely new Vista (fresh) install and activeX install from adobe website was C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx\2 String ends up pointing to a directory 2 (which of course is non existing) String changed to C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx And all crashing has stopped. It's the same with XP - string ends with directory 2 But classes typelib was another To check - do a search in registry (Vista or XP) for the word/key flash9d.ocx and when the flash9d.ocx\2 string comes up modify it. I'm guessing it should perhaps be a parameter like e.g C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx,2 But leaving it like "C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx" works now fine for me. - Syar -
Syar, I am afraid I couldn't follow that at all. Can you explain one more time a little more carefully the steps you took and with more detail? I looked through my registry and could not find anything like what you described...
No ! No error in installation. Say this because: I have an XP Pro installation too with exactly the same default registry key and value (string data ends with ...\flash9c.ocx\2 ) So adobe flashplayer install must have put it there. On this one IE7 crashed periodically depending on the flash ads on web sites open in browser. Modified it - removed "\2" from it and all crashing was cured. On the Vista install - brand new newinstall - visited adobe flash download - same thing - Default string ended with ... flash9c.ocx\2 Modified it - removed "\2" from it and all crashing was cured. Not much more details to add. Simple version : wrong stringdata in registry on the one mentioned typelib key. Both for XP and Vista . - Syar -
I also have to say that this APPCRASH with flash9d.ocx as cause and with the invalid reg entry = ...\Flash9d.ocx\2 for me just happens on one out of five computers I have. The one that gets the invalid reg key and crashes is a DUAL-Core AMD64 Nforce4 system and leeds me to believe that why flash installer puts in the 2 Digit , but as I said errouneous cause the backslash in front of it. The XP installation mentioned is on the same PC with dual boot. The other 4 PC's is two laptops with single core cpu's - one centrino Intel and the other AMD sempron. Both theese have XP and has never had the IE7 appcrash due to flash9(x).ocx. The other two is AMD 64 systems nForce chipset - one with XP and the other with Vista32 and has never had this issue either. So - those of you with dual-core cpu system - take note of this and check registry . I have now been having ten tabs open in IE7 from different media webs with lots of flash banner ads and other flash ads after the reg modification for several hours and no crash due to flash9d.ocx. - Syar -
Hi, I think syar2003 hit the nail on the head. Good work Syar! In the registry of my pc (XP and no dual-core) I found one entry with "flash9d.ocx\2" and one with "flash9d.ocx, 2". So I changed the first one to "flash9d.ocx, 2" (with a "space" before the "2"). Then closed and opened IE7 again, and untill now no crashes, finalllllyyyyyyyyy ! I think this might be the problemsolver. I'll post again if IE7 and Flash crash again. Thanks again Syar
That was an issue on my PC also. I changed to the ", 2" convention, and also tried it without the ", 2". WEATHER.COM still crashes on several pcs. Anyone else have that issue? The link is: http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/80918?from=mycity_wx It almost always crashes within 2 minutes on both pcs i mainly use. I crash at other times also, but not seen any patterns with other places, more random.
Hello I have since last post had elleven tabs up in IE7 under Vista32 without crash 00000005 flash9d.ocx source. Tabs from different news sources with lots of auto renewing flash ads in each "tab". Never could do this before with even 3-4 tabs - crashed before after less than an hour.
GregInCos: I agree with you, I posted this problem two moths ago(maybe longer ago or shorter) and I never got a clear solution. My laptop is brand new and does not have any conflicting programs or screensavers and is completely up to date, yet adobe keep insisting and posting that these are the issues. Obviously they are not what is causing it if my IE keeps crashing. It is quite annoying and I personally do not like adobe at all anymore. Sometimes after my crashes my IE won't even work right for a while. Hopefully some of these new fixes that regular people came up with(not adobe of course) will finally work.

Sorry to be such a newbie, but debugging software set-up problems is NOT my specialty.
Hello again, jpwrunyan, don't bother messing with your registry, Syar's solution didn't work either. Flash and IE7 keep crashing !!! It looked so promising and easy. Yeah, Adobe should really dig into this problem now... I have a quite succesful website with a chat in flash, and everybody tells me about their browsers crashing. Not only IE. The cpu keeps rising untill it crashes. I think the only solution is to uninstall the latest Flash and go back to a previous version. Come on Adobe, it is obvious that Flash causes the problems. Please find out what the problem is than instead we start messing with our registries.
Hi all, I tried the registry hack myself, but the player in IE still crashes after a while. This is getting really annoying. Come on, Adobe, admit that your player is buggy and please try to fix this error! Aspar
I have tried this solution suggested but to no avail. May help others though.
Syar2003.. didnt work for me either... Leave that weather link page up for 2 minutes and it crashes. Listen... if we just delete the flash player, do we lose much other than the ability to see adds we dont want to see anyway? BTW, anybody try Red Lichite's fix.. Someone verify it works on XP before we go through the steps, since its considerably more involved than Syar's supposed 'fix' which didnt fix at all.. Thanks. Think adoble will EVER step up to the plate.. We ought to be able to bring vendors like this to trial and give them what they deserve.
Well, not to let Adobe completely off the hook, but IE is also a problem. Due to specifications rules set out by our client, our application is only "guaranteed" to work on IE 6 for our clients. Well, after extensive testing, IE 6 (and probably 7) has several memory leaks when combined with Javascript. I think we all know that IE's javascript functionality is poor at best. We contacted Microsoft as well as Adobe and MS basically told us, "anything could go wrong with a leak like this--and we will fix it eventually--but since we don't make Flash Player, we can't help you with your application." So basically, until Microsoft fixes IE 6, there is still a limit to how much Adobe can do to make Flash player work. A house built on a bad foundation, no matter how well built, is still unstable. And developing stuff for IE is quite frankly like building a house on top of a marsh. Now, what Adobe fails to do is to make this clear to people who have to make applications. Why? Maybe because Microsoft is now competing with their own Silverlight RIA tool. You can bet that if Silverlight didn't work, Microsoft would do something about it since its theirs. Now Flash Player is their competitor, so I doubt Microsoft cares about fixing IE just so their competitor's application will work. Adobe obviously would never want to admit this. Adobe's answer? AIR, I presume. Finally, the only think I feel obliged to take Adobe to task for is that everytime they release a new player, they GUARANTEE that legacy applications will still work. This guarantee is fallacious. With FP 9 the memory management has changed such that it is exposed to vulnerabilities and instabilities in IE 6's own memory management where previously it was not. So, although in a "perfect world" legacy applications for say, FP 7 should work in FP 9, in reality, they do not. I also understand that it is unrealistic to expect Adobe and MS to cooperate since they are now competitors, but I really really wish Adobe would stop making these stupid guarantees regarding Flash Player and MIE that prompt users to update their flash player and then, by so doing, destabilizing legacy applications. Adobe does not suffer from the repurcussions directly. Who does? The application developer. With FP 9's release, suddenly our client is barraging us with complaints that our application does not work. Obviously, if they hadn't updated FP 7 to FP 9 in the first place, then our application would be fine. But then again, THEY are the CUSTOMER and they only updated because, like I said, Adobe GUARANTEED that contents made in AS 2.0 would work in FP 9. Thanks a hell of a lot, Adobe. The solution? Unfortunately there is none for us with or legacy applications. We have to simply learn from this horrible experience and move on. From now on, if our clients want us to make content to run in IE then our response has to be to use Silverlight. No more Flash. If they want us to make contents in Flash then our response has to be use AIR. No more IE. That is the only way to guarantee stability, or at the very least, guarantee a responsible response from either proprietor. In conclusion: Adobe Technology + Microsoft Technology = misery.
All: I have returned. For anyone wondering why i dropped this thread it's fairly simple. For a two month period I wasn't an Adobe employee. Now I'm back to the fold and while I'll be focusing on live cases (and less forums) I do need to pick up on this crashing issue. So... consider this a reset. Most of the things I was working on back in May have radically changed. Not all, but most. My primary reason for returning to this thread is to discuss known crashes in IE7. There are several possible reasons and Engineering has been working very actively to find and fix them (and fixes have been rolled into the updates to the Flash Player 9 beta on lab.adobe.com). I can't document them all here, and I'm not even certain that we've found them all. I want to expound on that , but ideally I'd like to wait for the next release of the beta on labs. One of the things we should see in the NEXT player beta is a small but significant change in the way Flash Player manages memory in the AVM. IE7 introduced a lot of changes into it's memory management scheme and we think those are the core of the crashing problem. And some slight changes to some found problems with garbage collection. And we'll test those publicly when the next labs Player beta goes life (and when it goes live i'll post to this thread). And no, I'm not sure when that will be yet. Now, while we wait, let's see if we can all agree. I have it from a solid source that this specific weather.com SWF will reliably crash IE7. http://www.weather.com/outlook/homeandgarden/home/map/interactive/60178?from=36h our_map_large&animation=true&zoom=7&interactiveMapLayer=radar I'd appreciate it if the IE7 users on this thread could test that URL. All I need to know is if you crash or not. Don't need a crash log or mdmp yet. Now, we see IE6 crashes too. But those are different, and less consistent. jpwrunyan, do you happen to have a case number from your previous discussion with support? I'll do some digging to see if I can find anything related to getURL. I seem to remember a simlar flex case coming up.. Regards, Bentley Wolfe Adobe Systems
I tried the link to weather.com and within seconds I got an error message that IE had to close & sent error report. That usually doesn't happen. My system just freezes and then I have to use the power button to restart.
Yup.. that linked crashed the IE session that it was running in in about 3 minutes, abending with the following msg: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I wanna thank both jpwrunyan and BWolfe for going outside the box in trying to at least provide some kind of answer to whats going on...
FYI I have escalated this to our Adobe Technical Account Manager, who has already been in touch collating relevant information.
Excellent... Looking at this morning's press release it seems that there is going to be an update to the beta Flash Player release later today. At that time we can all retest....
I believe the build number for this beta (for Windows IE) is 9.0.60.184.. I"ve been testing IE7 on VMWare and just cannot get it to crash. But I have a lot of memory.. and we know that this is more likely to occur on machines with less memory. If you've over a gig then you're less likely to crash unless you open a lot more instances of Flash Player in either multiple tabs or Windows. One of my peers can easily make it crash with 2 instances open on a slower machine with 511 mb of ram.. So, please install this latest beta from labs.adobe.com. BE SURE TO RUN THE FLASH PLAYER UNINSTALLER FIRST!!!!!!! That's very important! And when you reply with info, please include player version number (right click, choose "About Flash Player") and Windows version and browser vesion.. I'm primarily focused on IE7 here, but i'd imagine someone with IE6 might be able to make it crash the same.. Bentley
You have version 9,0,60,184 installed. I crash much less now. But eventually it still crashes with multiple tabs open. Also I have 2 gigs of ram, so I'm definitely not one of those with very little ram. And before I crashed very quickly. With the new version, I've yet to crash if I only have one tab open. But this definitely looks like a step in the right direction.
so i uninstalled flash9d and installed the beta to see if it would fix my particular problem which is: every time i got to msn games i can play for about 5 seconds and then my browser crashes. I wiped my computer 3 times yesterday and had decided not to upgrade to IE7 but the problem was still occuring. I installed the beta and it didnt help at all. Any suggestions?......Please..................................PLEASEEEEEEE!!
Thanks GregInCos.. that's helpful information. Still, you can make it crash. So still a problem.. Now, I'd like to escalate this to Engineering, using you as my main test pilot. :) Can you give me some system specs? I can see 2 gigs of ram.. i need specific browser and OS versions.. Bentley

Browser. IE 7.0.5730.11 OS: XP Profesional (not x64) (5.1 Build 2600) Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe board AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 3800+ I have a case open 172809287. It has my dxdiag file. As well as an old crash dump file. If you want me to get a new crash file, let me know and I can generate one. Greg
Just wanted to report that that particular interactive weather page thats being used for the case here used to crash my 9d flashplayer every time I went there within about 2 minutes. With my new, 9e Flashplayer beta, Ive been running that weather page for about 20 minutes now with no ill effect. Ill report back yet, or edit this post, if it crashes. So far, it seems much better.
I am running a Core 2 Duo with Vista Home Premium 2G Ram Dell Inspiron E1705. Nothing but crashes with IE7 ever since I bought the computer in Feb. I uninstalled Flash 9 yesterday as prescribed and loaded the new beta version. I see very little if any difference. Still crashes frequently. Hope you guys figure this out. It's really annoying...
celeron 2.7gig...768mb ram....windows xp home. It happens the most on the msn hearts game but has also happened on several other msn games. I decided to go ahead and update internet explorer to ie7. the message doesnt pop up instantly anymore it takes any where from 2 to 15 minutes now.
I am still getting the problem as well. We have no intention on ugrading to IE6 as yet. We are slightly diffferent as this issue is manifesting when we run our inhouse developed application. O/S - Windows XP Pro Browser IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 2GB RAM I also have a case open 1-48672054
ok heres the error i get when my browser crashes: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16512 ModName: flash9e.ocx ModVer: 9.0.60.184 Offset: 0005a2fa I also read the on real player. I dont have a real player download and record add-on to disable.
Well, there's no question that putting new memory in my computer has solved my problem. 8 days post memory change and I still have yet to experience any type of flash error whatsoever. WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[q]Originally posted by: GregInCos How about if you open like 8 tabs each with some different flash content. Then on the 9th tab try to run that weather.com link above. Does it crash then?[/q] thats when I used to get the problem most.. with loads of tabs opened, and then the weather.. So far Ive had 4 opened plus the weather, and no problems.. Going out of town now.. be back monday. Will try more then.
Exactly. Every tab means more instances of Flash Player in memory, each taking up their own piece. What we're trying to improve is the way each of these separate instances -asks- the browser for memory... FP says to IE, 'hey, how much is available?" and IE responds.. well, previous versions of Flash Player weren't very sensitive to that response. But along comes IE7 which breaks it's memory chunks into 256k pieces.. so many of the IE7 crashes were caused by some instance of Flash Player asking for more than 256k, not realizing that IE wouldn't give it that much. Crash. So improving that allocation process is the key for IE7.. And at this point I think we should try to focus on IE7 in this thread to eliminate as many variables as possible. Crashing in IE6 is a different animal. Bentley
RedLichtite, I'm going to check on your request. Sounds like something probably different than what we're talking about here. It -would- be helpful if you could test your app in IE7, especially with the latest Flash Player beta. I'm wary of IE7 on my systems too, so I understand (and I only install it on a VMWare partition just for that reason...) Bentley
Hello Bentley, Can you please tell me what Beta I must install ... - ActiveX Control for Windows Internet Explorer or - Plugin for Windows
I tried every single thing mentioned here and NOTHING worked. It first happened randomly two days ago when it kept freezing during YouTube videos and other videos using flash. I have to restart my computer every time because firefox wont open up again after crashing. I'm getting sick of this and I have no where to turn!!!
The issue is only occuring on certain PCs. Other PCs with the same spec and installed software (before instlaling the beta) are not experiencing this?!? If you want more infor Bentley send me a private message.
Hi, I posted in another thread last week about having all the same problems everyone else seems to have with flash9.ocx. It started on a new (2nd hand) pc whereas on my old pc I had zero problems with flash games and videos..anyway. I appear to have sorted it myself and have had not a single error block in any flash game or you-tube etc etc.. all I did was take out my RAM and dusted it off and placed the two of them back in.. not sure if that is going to help anyone else but it worked for me :)
I don't have much to report just now.. Your particular case is handled out of another office and I'm waiting for access to that system. Unfortunately I have a lot of balls in the air just now... So still working on it. Bentley
I'm having the same problem with Flash9d.ocx. It's always when using the animation radar at the weatherchannel.com. Microsoft says it's the flash plugin and of course Adobe points the finger to video driver or sound. It's a shame that all these interfaces can't play well together after all these generations of growth from years ago. It reminds me a lot of the "old days" when it was always Microsoft and Big Blue pointing fingers back and forth. Seems somethings never change.
Please test with the latest Flash Player public beta (r60) from labs.adobe.com. Weather.com's map is one of the sites we're trying to focus on, because that seems to be one of the most common crashes. Read back in the thread for more info. Bentley

Bentley[/q] Whoops, another beta number.. YOu told us previously to download and use beta number: 9.0.60.184 . Is this the same as the new beta number you just used, ie ' Beta r60' ??
The website says the beta version was released on August 21. Bentley, as boostm3 asked, has this been updated from 9.0.60.184?
Whew, thanks for clarifying. BTW, for me, this beta has practically completely solved the crashing issues I used to experience with many tabs open. Since I installed it, Ive had only one inexplicable crash, but I cant even pin it 100% on the flash player.. No banners or warnings.. What happend is that my IE7 session, with several open tabs, simply closed without a trace.. No msg about sending a report to microsoft like I used to get.. Just a silent termination of the IE7 session. Thats the only aberrant behavior Ive seen since I installed it.. So Im very happy with it.. I realize others have been experiencing little improvement, which will make it even harder to debug, perhaps.. But for me, its been great.
I know now that these OCX/add-on errors are definately being caused by different things by different browsers so let me preface this post by saying, this applies to MSIE 6 add-on errors (not 7!!). Although I don't have details yet, we have 100% confirmed with Microsoft that IE 6 contains an unhandled error (particularly when opening new windows) that, if when the browser content contains the Flash Player 9 (and up) ActiveX control, can cause the add-on error. This also is regardless of what the Flash Player's .swf content is doing. So for this particular problem, it looks like a hotfix for the MSIE 6 browser is necessary. Still, if Adobe gets back to us with some sort of work-around--which seems impossible--I will try to post it. I hope that this at least saves people from running around in circles as much as I have the past 2 months.
jpw, can you mail me any more detail about that exception (bewolfe@*d*b*.com)
Bentley, for some reason after i installed your beta, IE 7 which used to crash at least daily, has not crashed once... I have 1 mb ram and routinely operate an IE7session with over a dozen tabs opened in it, some of which use the Flash ocx player. So despite the ongoing problems some are having, Im ecstatic!
Well that does confirm that we are making some progress. I'd say the current public beta has solved maybe 70% of the crashing problems. It's the other 30% I'm worried about. If you're testing with Flash Player 9.0.60.184, and still crashing, private message me your email address.
