macromedia players flash: Need help with this one. All of a sudden I keep getting a pop-up saying "cannot
locate file flash.ocx". What the heck is it and how do I get rid of it. It is
QUITE annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar pop-up problem. After downloading Flash player 9 (and doing
the appropriate uninstall procedure) I incessantly get the following pop-up:
"could not find the macromedia flash." The sites I view all work fine, but I
still get this pop-up. I even get it when I have not yet even opened my
browser. Any help would be appreciated, because it is inded annoying.

I am having the same problem. Ever since I allowed the upgrade to 9. The pop-up
is extremely annoying and appears all the time. I f anyone knows how to get rid
of the little sucker I would be ever so grateful!!!

I have discovered that this is generally a problem specific to screen savers
and their inability to deal with the flash update. Everytime my screen saver
was scheduled to come on, the pop-up appeared. I switched to different, older
ones and no longer have this issue. It appears to be up to each individual
screen saver distributor to upgrade their product to work with the flash
update, as I gather from comments elsewhere that adobe will likely not get
around to fixing this issue.

I have a new iMac and use Safari and I'm also experiencing this annoyance. I can view the web sites just fine but who needs popups?

I am also having this pop-up problem. "could not find the macromedia flash"
pops up after a period of inactivity, It began when I upgraded to version 9.
It goes away if I go back to version 7. (I'd go back to version 8 if I could
find a copy of it.) It could be screensaver related, but I am just using one
that came in Win XP, not a third party product. Does Adobe ever look at posts
and reply to them? Any help would be appreciated.

After reading the above and checking my own scren saver, I did turn out to have
a non-standard screen saver. I switched to a simple windows standard
screensaver and I think my pop-up has gone away. Adobe should still solve it
from their side, though. After all, version 7 does not do it.

I am glad to hear that changing or disabling the screensaver seems to fix this
problem for most of us. Certainly, screensavers are pretty antiquated and
pointless on the newer computers out there, but there are still some uses.
Ever since I turned mine off on one computer and switched to an older
screensaver on my oldest computer, I have not had this problem. And,
unfortunately, I think the problem is isolated to such a small fraction of
screensavers that adobe is just going to let those distributors take care of
the problem rather than spending the time to fix whatever glitch is affecting
them. The only downside is that once you figure out the problem, which can
take time and effort, you could lose a pretty cool screensaver. All in all,
that isn't much in the long run, certainly not enough to get adobe involved.

I Found my Dale Earnhardt Jr. Screen saver was causing the problem

Our IT department had us copy the flash9.ocx file (in the
system32\Macromed\Flash folder) as flash.ocx in the same directory.

The error is gone and my screensaver now works again correctly!

Looks like some screensavers look for "flash.ocx" and the new name is
"flash9.ocx"
Copying as the new file name will make both flash 9 stuff, and the old stuff
work!

Let me know if this works for others!

I had the issue with a screen saver also .

Tried Dan's suggestion - worked perfectly!

Adobe should still fix it but I'm happy.

Copying the flash9.ocx file and renaming it to flash.ocx appears to have
stopped the error message for me as well (and it was associated with my screen
saver). Way for Dan's IT guys to go! Please tellt hem thanks-- it was driving
me nuts! :sun;

Your solution worked for me too. I'd found and followed all kinds of standard
recommended uninstall reinstall procedures that did nothing but waste time.
I've now had 24 hours without that annoying cannot find flash message. Many
thanks for posting that! Paul
