TEST POTENTIAL FIX for 1904 Flash Player install issue.

A number of users have had this problem. Some have posted threads,
others have opened support incidents. We have a potential fix but I
need to have it confirmed by end users before I feel comfortable
publishing a technote.

If you have the 1904 error, please test these steps to see if they allow
you to then install Flash Player 8. Reply back to the thread with your
results..

(If you have other Flash Player install issues, see
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer).

You will need to be comfortable editing the registry with regedit. If
you are _NOT_ comfortable editing the registry then it's probably best
to just wait until we confirm a solution and publish a technote, or to
take your machine to a professional.

STEPS:
In the registry find the following keys (if they exist). Then right
click and grant read/full control to Administrator.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.1
(There is NO ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.2)
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.3
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.4
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.5
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.6
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.7
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.spl
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.swf
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mfp
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.sol
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.sor

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}\InprocServer32
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/futuresplash

:confused;
I tried this as well - in my case, the registry key for
"ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8" existed but I didn't have permission to view
its contents, rename it, delete it, or change its permissions (yes, I have
admin rights on this machine and I'm the only user on the machine).

It would seem that this is the key problem (no pun intended); if I can't
access this registry key, the install won't be able to do so either. I would be
happy to manually delete the key but I can't find any way to do so.

Thanks

Ken

I have the same problem. One easy solution I describe here:
- Log in as a Administrator
- Look in de folder C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\Players\Release
- Dubble click on the two msi-files: Install Flash Player 8 ActiveX.msi and
Install Flash Player 8 Plugin.msi

That's all

I have a similar 1904 message.

Have Flash ver 8 successfully installed.
Need Flash ver 7 because QuickBooks 2005 must see it. Their install fails
without it. (sigh)
All registry keys listed have "full control" for "Administrators".

XP Pro SP2 (all hotfixes applied)
Only one week old install of XP
IE ver: 6.0.2.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Keep me in the loop on what I can do to fix this problem. I pulled the RSS
for the 1904 threads.

ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8 didnt even exist.... neither did
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.spl
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}\InprocServer32
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/futuresplash
maybe thats my problem

This is so sad.
Bentley and the boys are not even close to a fix.
Still not aware of the real problem, that the wrong registry setting they
created caused problems for thousands. Its not possible to edit the settings
even as an admin. And no JohanBatist its not that simple if you have a 1904.

Bentley listen up:
Its not possible to change rights to some of the registry keys!!
An uninstall will not get rid of the keys either.
Fix this issue now.. and make sure it works for all languages too..

Im amazed that you cant access your .msi file and find out exactly what you
did to our systems. Why do we have to tell you?

Also fix the flash player update for studio 8 and 2004 MX they contain the
same errors.

:beer;

In my opinion, no one should install this patch, as it sets deny flags on
Everyone and Anonymous users. Remember even system and Administrators are part
of Everyone! (Basic Window Security)
Registering version 8.0.24.0 of Flash8a.ocx sets the following permissions:

Everyone: Deny Set Value and Deny Delete.
Anonymous Logon: Deny Set Value and Deny Delete.

On the following registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB70-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{D27CDB6B-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}

Why is Adobe setting permissions in the OCX?

:disgust; This is absolutely ridiculous, hey you guys managed to screw up half
the world's computers running on M$, as i can see no solution to this stupid
simple problem. Maybe is time for open source, & let the real professionals
solve it. I cannot help thinking at microsoft&adobe as a deadly coktail.Damn.

Your solution works for me but instead of setting the permission for some of
the registry keys, i set the permission for the whole HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and it
actuallys work. Another part is that i actually grants right not only to
administrator but to the login user also.:)

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried to change the registry
permissions to the registry keys named here but I am totally locked out from
doing anything to these keys. The guys down at Macromedia/Adobe have majorly
screwed up our computers and I am on the verge of clean installing windows.
For all of you guys out there that do need to use flash, if you haven't already
done this, download Mozilla Firefox. It is a better browser overall but more
importantly it allows you to use flash even if ie doesn't work as it is a
seperate plugin. I will keep my eyes glued to this forum for any new ideas on
fixes... One possible idea although I don't know whether it is plausible or
not, could somebody who has a working version of flash export the registry keys
that we cannot access. If we could then import them into our registries would
they replace the current ones? More importantly would they carry the
permissions with them? Keep up the good work on fixes guys!

I had this problem, and tried the fix suggested by Bentley. I found
that the only key that caused problems was the key for
ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.8 - this one would come up with an error
message saying it was unable to open the key. I was able to right
click and enter the permissions section, however I wasn't able to add
change any of the permissions on the initial screen (I didn't have the
proper security) - in other words, I was locked out in the same way
that others have posted above. I was, however, able to go in to the
'advanced' area, then change the owner of the key to myself. This then
gave me access to the key and let me add permission for the
administrator group). Interestingly, there was also a gropu called
"S-1-5-21-1220945662-261478967-725345543-1005" listed, which had
special permissions. I'm not quite sure how this group was created,
seems a bit odd!

I then had to go through the same process for the subkey to this key,
which was called CLSID.

Once I did this, Flash installed perfectly!

Thanks for the fix, Bentley!

The unistaller you are told repeatedly to run to completely uninstall
Macromedia Flash as part of the cure does not work unless you go into the
registry and delete the deny settings for Everyone on the following keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D27CDB70-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{D27CDB6B-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}

Damn, I'm glad I didn't update any of the network workstations to 8.0.24 yet.
It's been a rather poor way to spend my Sunday evening. But then again, I'll
repeat, I'm glad I only updated two home computers, not 27 workstations. So
long Flash, it's been good knowing you. It took out Shockwave as well.

Definitely stay away from the MSI installers, use only the EXE installers. I
will manually install everything on the network. The security permissions being
set by the MSI installers on the registry keys is messed up.

Any work on this? I tried this fix and many of the keys were not set to Allow but I still cannot install plugin in IE

Bret Lanius

Solved! This is a registry mess. There are registry entries that have
permissions not set right.

On another forum the utility http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html
was suggested.

Use this and set the filtering to Denied and then when you try to install
flash OCX you will see what registry entries are being denied and you can set
permissions for Admin in the registry. Then Uninstall Flash and reinstall....

Worked for me.
