macromedia players flash : Can't install Flash player for Firefox 1.5.0.1 on XP Home SP2

I had been using various versions of Firefox with the v7 Flash player on this
PC for well over a year with no issues. I am on the latest Firefox 1.5.0.1.

Everything was working great until I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my
version of Flash player to the current 8.0.22 version. I downloaded and
installed the Firefox/Mozilla 8 version. It gave no errors. However, any Flash
content in web pages no longer displayed. The adobe Flash test page does not
even work. No error messages. No "You need to get a Flash plugin icon." No
nothing.

So I uninstalled the v8 flash player and tried to reinstall it. I found that
the install would no longer seem to run. I run the installer exe and the
installer progess bar appear flashes for 1/2, then disappears. No error
messages. Just nothing.

So next I tried completely uninstalling firefox and reinstalling that. Firefox
reinstalled successfully. So I tried Flash player v8 again. Same thing. It will
not run. Again, no error messages. Just a 1/2 sec appearance of the installer
progress bar, then nothing.

Next, I figured that maybe it's just Flash player v8 that is not working - so
let's go back to v7. I dug up an old copy I had saved of the v7 Flash player
for Firefox/Mozilla that had served me well for over a year. I tried installing
that. v7 setup actually ran and let me select firefox and install and then
indicated that it had installed sucessfully. However, now back in the browser
any Flash content in web pages no longer displayed. The adobe Flash test page
does not even work. No error messages. No "You need to get a Flash plugin
icon." No nothing.

After that, I tried just about every combination of removing firefox versions
and reinstalling and trying to get some version of Flash player to run on any
of them. None of them worked anymore, not even combinsations that had always
worked fine previously. In the browser, any Flash content in web pages is still
no longer displayed. The adobe Flash test page does not even work. No error
messages. No "You need to get a Flash plugin icon." No nothing.

Any ideas?

Frustrated beyond belief,
AK

I just started using Firefox a week ago and I'm having the same... literally...
the SAME exact problem. Flash 8 refuses to install. I get a dialog box for
half a second, then it disappears. No confirmation of successful download...
no error message... nothing.

Is it a Macromedia problem or a Mozilla problem???

I'm having the same problem with Win98 / IE6. Trying to get that resolved in
another thread...

In this case here, did you all try to install after disabling the Firefox
Pop-Up Blocker in >Tools >Options >Content ?

Juergen,

Yes, it's one of the first things I did. I also disabled Norton's Ad blocker and Pop-up blocker.

Please keep in mind that these are peer to peer forums, and not necessarily
monitored by Adobe on a daily basis. I monitor the players.flash forum as
often as possible, but official support needs to go through
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/

For this, the only ting I can think of for now is to check permissions on the
DLL:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins

If someone could email an incident on this it would be helpful..

I also had this problem. It turned out it was caused by and extension called
Amazing Media Browser. If you also have it - then that's it.
The problem is that it has an option called "Block all embedded objects" which
by default is set to YES.
Just go to Options and change that setting to NO, and all your problems will
be gone ;-)
