Many hours of head scatching lead me to believe that 8a was buggy and
had permission issues. Several peopl on our network had the same
problem around the same time. Then I found this article -

I would like to replicate the problem if anyone knows how, as I've
fixed all known buggy machines but need to carry out further tests.
