this is really gettin ta b a real problem...me and alot of ppl i kno are having
problems with this flash thing... there is no way ta get flash ta register
correctly and no valid solutions ta tha problem. i've tried everything from
tryin registry trials, ta installin an active x manager and still no solution..
tha active x manager i install says flash flayer 8 has registered properly
flash isnt even on tha registry when i look....i've even tried using/installing
tha flash beta 8.5 and still nothing... that wont even register... im thinkin i
might jus hafta buy anotha hard drive but i shouldnt hafta... my computer's
only 2yrs old...i shouldnt hafta buy a new drive every time macromedia makes a
new flash player... im not blaming macromedia or nuffin im jus upset because
almost every site uses tha flash player feature and im tired of lookin at those
static active x symbols(red triangle, blue box, green circle) or w/e they
are... i mean y cant any one find tha problem yet(still im not blaming or
taking my problem out on macromedia)... i mean i can i wanna help figure this
out too but im only 17... tha only thing i can think of is that there are alot
of registry problems thats affectin tha flash registration... ta tell u tha
truth macromedia should get together with some registry fix experts or

I have the same problem. Flash Player 8 will not play on any web sites in
Internet Explorer 6. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help. Running:
RegSvr32 C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash/Flash.ocx in Run gets a file
failed to register message.

HOWEVER FLASH PLAYER WILL PLAY ON ALL WEB PAGES IN FIREFOX.

Hi Jean-Marc

I used your FlashRepair program and it worked :) SWFs are playing now in IE
after weeks of trying. Thanks a lot.

I deinstalled all Flash players.
I used your program.
I installed Flash player (not the direct install via internet which didn't
work): install_flash_player_active_x.msi

Merci beaucoup :)

:disgust;
I don't want to jump on the "what the heck is wrong with Adobe?" bandwagon,
but after 12 hours of trying to get Flash player 8 to work under Win98 and IE6,
and then finding this Forum, I am totally irritated. It appears that this
problem has been known for several weeks. I was working perfectly fine until I
visited some page three days ago, and in a window behind my active window Flash
Player 8 started downloading. By the time I found it, it was too late. For
some reason I didn't get one of those "do you want to continue" dialog boxes.
The only saving grace is that I was just about to reinstall Win98, IE6, etc.
It looks like that won't do much good. Jean-Marc, any chance you could write
your repair program for Win98? It is Monday, maybe the engineers can get back
to work, drink some coffee, and fix this thing. Ugggh.

Hi,

No, i can't. Because my script change XP registry rights and W98 don't
have this kind of security. So, your problem isn't related to registry
rights.

What's your problem exactly ?

5/2/2006 2:59:00 AM
Greetings Jean-Marc. I will try to recall what has happened. Basically, after
the auto-download of Flash 8, I started having IE crash when visiting a page
with Flash objects. On submitting the report to MS, the reply was "possibly a
problem with msvcrt.dll" at times, and "unknown" at others. So, I first tried
Add/Remove to uninstall Flash 8 and installing from the Adobe site. That
resulted in the broken file icon for the flash object and text appearing below
after the unsuccessful install (on the install page). At some point I read
that I needed the Adobe Flash uninstaller, so I downloaded that and tried
again. Same result, so I downloaded the Adobe Flash 8 installer to my
computer, and tried uninstalling and then installing locally. No error
message, and Flash 8 added to the list in Add/Remove, but when visting the
Adobe test page, an empty window in the Flash area. I looked at the Adobe
rep's long message in another thread, and looked for
Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash. On my computer I found
Windows/System/Macromed/Flash. In the folder I found the Administrator install
exe and the flash8b.ocx file (not 8a.ocx as the Adobe rep suggested). I looked
in the registry under one key (don't know which) and found flash8b.ocx, so the
8a vs 8b difference didn't bother me (I saw one guy said his registry said 8a
and the file was 8b). I did NOT find the flash.ocx file that is supposed to be
in the FLASH folder. I tried the Adobe rep's simple and harder procedures, but
had the same result on the Test page. Diddling with the registry doesn't
bother me, with proper direction, but I really don't understand how everything
fits together. I also don't have the knowledge to know why the Flash 8 update
could foul things up (this seems like something Adobe's people should be able
to answer, if you could find the right one. Then people with computer smarts
could 'splain to the the rest of us how to proceed). Anyway, I found that if I
uninstall using Adobe's uninstaller that I can surf without crashing. Just
can't see any Flash. I did get a message from Adobe asking if I have the
flash.ocx file, and am awaiting further reply. Any advice you could offer
would be greatly appreciated.

I have had this problem for a couple of months now, and since I have AOL, I
contacted them. Of course they said that it was a Macromedia problem, and they
in turn said that it was a browser problem. I have been playing pass the buck
with my problem, and today, I decided to check out the forums to see if anyone
else was having this problem, and I see that I am not the lone problem haver.
I am shocked and appalled that the company could not give me a solution, but an
online member had the solution.

I thank you Jean Marc for taking the time to help us! By the way, if anyone
should need to know, I have windows XP, an antiquated Toshiba laptop, and no
help AOL.

Jean Marc saved the day for me! I followed the instructions and clicked on to
the repair, and I can see again.

(Internet Explorer and Firefox crashing on them any time you try to view a

I tried your program and I got an error. I'm running windows XP home edition.

I've slightly changed the way the function who is at line 85 works and
updated the script to workaround what i think to be the problem.

BTW, after thinking about FF, i don't think that firefox can interfer in the
repair process, so the script don't ask to close it before repairing Flash.

You have replied courteously.
I appreciate that, even if you can't help me with my error.
I'm going to ask anyway since you seem the smartest person I've come accross
about this.

I left a window open then the script worked, but it didn't fix the problem.

Windows is freshly installed and all updates
I used to be able to my favorite web page until it upgraded to flash 10.1
Now the site makes me download this flash 10.1
Then when I try to load the page after 10.1 installs, I get an error in both
internet explorer and firefox saying
"has encountered an error and needs to close"
It mentions a module called "text asset.x32" as part of the error

It's clear that my script can't repair all flash problems.

We can found on these forum both the link for standalone installer and
the link for uninstaller.
(uninstaller is here :
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe )

Try to uninstall, then re-install with S/A installer.

Have you checked that you are malware free ? (spywares, viruses, etc...)

i saw 2 days ago in a french newsgroup someone with a neverending
flash problem. After a spyware cleaning, flash is now OK.

Weird, this key is corrected by my script. The few reasons the key
can't be corrected are :
- registry damaged
- ownership of the key isn't set to administrators

For the first case, just try to delete manually :
MacromediaFlashPaper.MacromediaFlashPaper (folder)
et retry my script

For the second, check advanced permissions on this key,
ownership tab and add, if needed "administratorS" group
(check the checkbox at bottom also), then ok, ok, ok.
Retry the script.

Hope this helps

I received a similar error:

Pongracic,
I will do my best to explain what I did. Kind of a long process, but well
worth it.

1. Download a SA installer for Flash
2. Download the Flash repair program mentioned above
3. Install the Flash Player
4. Run the regmon, set the filter and minimize the window.
5. Run the Flash Repair program. When you get the error, just hit ok and then
maximize the regmon window.
6. There should be a icon that looks like a piece of paper with an arrow next
to it. This is your auto scroll button. It is located between Options and
Help. Click it to stop auto scroll.
7. Use the scroll bar on the right to find all the highlighted "access denied"
entrys. Look for ones that have to do with Macromedia, Flashplayer, shockwave
etc.
8. Get a piece of paper and write down all the ones you find.
9. Close regmon. Click Start, run and type in regedit
10. This will bring up your system registry. You have to find all the "access
denied" keys. Once you find them, right click and go to permissions.
11. You have to make yourself(administrator) the owner of each one and give
your self full control of each key.
12. Once you do that, close regedit, and start from Step 4 again. You may have
to do this a few times. I ended up doing this about 5 or 6 times, before the
Flash Repair program worked.

Jean Marc is better at explaining then I am, but you can give it a shot.
Without the advice Jean Marc gave, I would have drop kicked my computer into
next week.

Good luck!

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for trying to send me in the right direction. I Followed everything you
said to do up to #9. Question about #7: I found quite a few "access denied"
entries, but only two of them seemed to have anything to do w/ macromedia. So,
I went to #9: and did what you instructed. #10 was not clear to me: How do I
find all of the access denied keys? Here's what I found, just in case you know
what it is:

5095 5.30556536 Regini.exe:3924
HKLM\software\classes\shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash.
5096 5.30570889 (the rest of the info is the same).

How do I do a search based on this information? Could you walk me through it?

Thanks so much for your help!

Christina,
When you run regmon, you should see some columns at the top. Time, Process,
Request, Path, etc. The Path column is the one that tells you what key is being
denied.

I know I was lost the first time I opened up the registry, but in time you can
get used to it. Almost all of the "denied" that I found were in the following
key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

There should be a plus symbol next to that key. Click it to expand the entire
tree. It's in alphabetical order, so look for the denied entrys in that key.
For example, one of my denied keys was Flashprop.Flashrop.

Right click and select permissions. When the security box pops up, click the
add button. Anothe box will pop up. This is the Select Users or Groups box.
Click the advanced button. The box will expand and you should see a Find Now
button. Click it. The window at the bottom should now be filled with all the
users on the computer. Select the administrator or administrators. Click OK.
Make sure you check the full control box. Now click advanced. and select the
owner tab. Highlight the administrator or administrators and click ok. Click
apply and then do that for each denied key. Now open regmon again, set the
filter, and minimize. Run the FlashRepair again. You may have to do this a few
times, but eventually the Flash repair program will be successful.

Hope this helps!

Hi Stephen,

I followed your instructions, but only got as far as succeeding in what you
told me to do with macromediaflashpaper.macromediaflashpaper, found in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. I tried to do the same w/ denied keys
shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash, but received an error:

Unable to save permission changes on shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash. Access
denied.

I don't know whether this is happening b/c the denied key began w/ HKLM
instead of HKCR (what I'm assuming stands for HKEY CLASSES ROOT). For example,
here's the denied key:

HKLM\software\classes\shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash

When I go to the registry, should I be looking in the location called HKEY
LOCAL MACHINE (don't know if HKLM stands for this)? If so, there are SOOOOO
many files under this location, I have NO idea where to begin.

Thanks again!
Christina

Just an addition to the last message:

Under the location HKCR, I have a list of all the versions of shockwave (eg:
shockwave.shockwave1, shockwave.shockwave2, shockwave.shockwave3, etc. up to
shockwave8). Can these be deleted?
MTCobra369
5/10/2006 9:46:11 AM
Christina,
Stick with the original location. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. I don't recall any of the
denied keys being anywhere else.

"Unable to save permission changes on shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash. Access
denied."

I got the same error as above. You have to keep trying. Make sure the owner is
administrator and has full control. Otherwise the error will keep popping up.

As far as deleting goes, you shouldn't have to. All the shockwave keys are
still in my reqistry. I will do some research and then get back with another
post.

Hi Stephen,

I really want to thank you for all the help you're giving me. I'm going
insane. I think I'm just tired. I've been trying for the past 1 1/2 hrs to
change the owner, but I keep getting the same error. Here's more info, too:
before I try to make permission changes to shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash0....6,
a screen pops up:

You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for
shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash, but you can make permission changes. Well, it
doesn't even allow me to do that. I try to change the owner, but no success.
However, I was able to change permission and owner for
shockwaveflash.shockwaveflash 7 + 8.

Is it possible that I have these problems b/c both my husband and I have
separate user accounts and are both listed as administrators?

Christina

Christina~
I just checked my registry and I used the entry that says Administrators
followed by a slash and then my last name. My wife and I are both
administrators on our PC, but I did not use mine or hers. I got the same
message that popped up and then I was able to go in and change the permissions.
Try clicking the "add" button that is next to the remove button when the
Security box pops up. Add the administrator, then select full control. Then try
changing the owner. I know I had to play with it awhile before it finally let
me change the permissions. A little trial and error and you will get it. I
can't remember if you select the owner first or the other way around. Try both
and hopefully one will work. Also, your welcome on the help. Someone helped me
and now I am trying to do the same.

Good luck!!

Hi Jean-Marc,

What do you mean by "registry rights"? I checked in regedit, but didn't see
"registry rights". Also, I've been able to change the owner on many of the
files that were being highlighted in regmon. However, even though I
successfully changed the owner in this file:

HKCR\MacromediaFlashPaper.MacromediaFlashPaper\CLSID

it's still highlighted as access denied when I run regmon.

Also highlighted as access denied:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WBEM\Providers\Logging

What does this mean?
Thanks for your help...Stephen, feel free to answer, as well. Your suggestion
to change the owner first, then add, worked for me...still having problems,
though.

"What do you mean by "registry rights"?"

Registry rights are what type of control, such as read, modify or full. Make
sure you give "full" contol to the owner and whomever you have selected on the
first security screen. They should be one and the same.

"Also highlighted as access denied:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WBEM\Providers\Logging"

I am not familiar with this registry key. Jean-Marc, any ideas?

Hope this helps Christina!!!

Hi,
I was looking through past posts to try to "decipher" secret messages :) and I
found this post by Jean-Marc:

1) delete manually macroflashpaper.macroflashpaper and retry script.
or
2) check advnaced permissions, ownershop tab and add, if needed,
administrators group (check box at bottom, then okokok, retry script).

What box(es) need to be checked? There are two on one menu and one on another.
Under "owner" tab, there is:
Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.

Under the "permissions" tab, there are two boxes:

1st box: Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child
objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here.
2nd box: Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown
here that apply to child objects.

Which, if any, boxes need to be checked? I'm really sorry if it's obvious, but
I read these over and over and I just can't make sense of them. Any help is
MUCH appreciated!

Thanks so much,
Christina

"What box(es) need to be checked? "

I think he means to check the Full contol box.

"There are two on one menu and one on another. Under "owner" tab, there is:
Replace owner on subcontainers and objects."

Don't check this one. Mine aren't.

"Under the "permissions" tab, there are two boxes:

1st box: Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child
objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here."

Check this one. Don't worry about the second one.

Hello,
I uninstalled and reinstalled using the updated files, but still no success.
I get an error:

dllregisterserver in c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\flash8b.ocx failed to
register.

I did everything I was instructed to do w/ regmon, regedit (changing owners to
administrators. I felt as if I was changing the same permissions over and over
again. Ran and reran regmon, then flashrepair to see "denied access" files.
They're the same thing all over again.

I also get an error saying that ocxshockwave flash is missing. What's that all
about? I've cleared my temp files and history more times than I can count. I
ran the spybot programs several times, rebooted numerous times. I just don't
know what the problem is. Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm fried.

Yes, basically because each time flash8a/b registers, registry permissions
are changed again.

While the new ocx can't register, the old one is always called from
these parts of the registry. (the same who are "access denied")

Do you know this trick with regmon ? To reach a listed registry key,
just double clic on it. Also use favorites.

BTW, if the "owner" of the registry key (permissions > advanced) is
"administrators", my script or the uninstaller must work.

Hello Jean-Marc,

[quoted text, click to view]

Yes, basically because each time flash8a/b registers, registry permissions
are changed again.

So, what can I do to stop this from happening?

[quoted text, click to view]

While the new ocx can't register, the old one is always called from
these parts of the registry. (the same who are "access denied")

Do you know this trick with regmon ? To reach a listed registry key,
just double clic on it. Also use favorites.

I forgot to ask: When I do the regmon thing and check all the red-highlighted
access denied keys, I get many from keys that don't seem to have anything to do
w/ flash or shockwave, i.e., HKLM\software\classes\.spl and
HKCR\jascpaintshop\photoalbum project and the list goes on. Do I care about
these keys or should I just pay attention to the flash and shockwave keys?

BTW, if the "owner" of the registry key (permissions > advanced) is
"administrators", my script or the uninstaller must work.

Well, I change the owner to "administrators", but the registry has been denied
several times since the change and, so, I have to go back and change the owner
again to administrators. Under the security tab in the list of "group or user
names" there are several names listed. Should there just be "administrators"
listed?

Thanks!

Salutations pongracic, tu nous disais :
[quoted text, click to view]

You can't. The trick is to unlock all needed keys/values to allow
FULL flash player setup to end without errors.

[quoted text, click to view]

Take care about the process who add these entries in regmon (add a filter if
needed). Also start and stop regmon monitoring to get just the good entries.

[quoted text, click to view]

I don't know if i'm right, but i'm guessing there is some sort of confusion
between "owner" and "registry permission". ("owner" is in advanced button.
You need to change the owner if you can't change permissions or if it's
"reversed" as soon as applied. The "owner" must be propagated with the
little chackbox before applying)

Registry permissions can be changed in main (not advanced button) security
tab and you need : system-full control + administratorS-full control +
everybody-read only
(BTW, once registered, flash OCX will change these)

issues as listed on this very long thread. I have followed all the
instructions posted by MTCobra and still no resolve. I get the following

I have tried running the repair with and without an active IE 6 window open.
Also, when setting the filter in regmon, I am entering into the HIGHLIGHT field

Like many others I have having problems getting FlashPlayer to run on my
machine. I contacted Adobe help (via email) and it was a 2-weeks waste of time
as they didn't solve my problem. I searched Adobe, found this forum and found
you. It appears that the solution you provided help so many ppl and I decided
to try your fix using the link:
http://docxp.mvps.org/b1n/FlashRepair.exe

However, when I attempted to run this program, Nortons went ballastic with a
"Malicous" warning and I backed off. I am not computer savy like most ppl here
and that message scared the hell out of me, so I didn't use it.

Should I be concerned or instruct Nortons to over-ride it?

I have found the CURE!! or at least for me. First unistall your current bad
version of the flash player using the flash player uninstaller, then download
the trial version of Macromedia Flash 8 and agree to downloading the flash

Jean-Marc is truly awesome! i had major issues with this silly flash player
not working on this wonderful new computer i built. i used his repair program,
the regmon to figure out what i needed to set permissions on. and after
several times of doing permissions on all the registry keys, his program
finally did its magic! now all the flash stuff works just great. no reboots
or anything. just follow the directions and it works. thanks!!
