Any page (or tab) playing a flash video (youtube for example) freezes firefox
when closed when firebug is loaded as a module. This only applies to flash
video's being played and intermittently fails to crash.

This message is cross posted to the bug report form as per the blog.

I am experiencing the same thing running Firefox on MacOS (17" G4 PoweBook).
And the problem seems to have started only after my Firebug was updated. All
else, OS, Firefox, etc, was already fully updated.

I am (and was) already using the latest 2.0.0.3 version of firefox. This
particular build comes from Debian though (iceweasel).

I find that even when creating a new firefox profile (a completely fresh
configuration with no cookies or plugins or anything), firefox still
occasionally freezes.

I have resorted to removing the flash plugin completely, and configuring
firefox to use the Videolan client to open .flv files.

Further information about the problem:

Firefox only freezes when the LAST tab containing a flash video is closed. I
assume that this is when the plugin unloads since the plugin seems to do that.

The freeze still occasionally occurs when firefox is opened with the
-safe-mode switch with all extensions disabled and all plugins but the new
Linux flash player removed.

So in the first report it's -with- Firebug on, but then in the last it's with
Firebug (and all other extensions) off, right?

You've already reported it via the bug form. So that's good (and should put it
in front of the right people).

This bug is reproducable without any extension loaded, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/98688 . Can
this be NPTL related? I reported via bug form too but as usual no reply yet.

Yes, the first bug report is with Firebug on, and the "further information"
message is with everything but Flash turned off. It seemed that with firebug
enabled, I was virtually guaranteed to get a freeze, and turning it off reduced
the chance of that considerably, however, looking back, I don't recall whether
the freeze only happened when closing the last flash enabled tab.

Yet more NEW INFORMATION:

While playing around with having the libraries installed or not, I noticed
that if I erase the flash libraries from the plugins directory without
restarting firefox, it will eventually act as if the plugin was never
installed. This leads me to strongly suspect that Firefox 2.0.0.3 actually
UNLOADS the plugin after it's finished using it. If Opera doesn't do that, and
the bug were in the shutdown code of the plugin, this would be a great
explanation for the bug.
