macromedia players flash : [ADOBE] Resolving Mac Flash Player install problems 9/2007

As of 9/2007 many folks seem to be having similar permission related Flash
Player problems on OSX, including:
-- errors viewing Flash content such as "The page "Macromedia - Flash Player"
has content of MIME type "application/x-shockwave-flash", but you don't have a
plug-in installed for this MIME type."
-- "Error creating file: 1008:5, -5000 Access Denied Error"
-- "It appears that a browser is still running on your system. Please close
all browsers and click 'Continue'."

If you get these errors, run the following steps:
1. Delete the following files (or the entire folder) if they exist:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player Enabler.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt

2. Repair disk permissions using the Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/).
For details see Apple TechDoc "Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS
X".

3. Reinstall Flash Player 9.

-- At this point most people will have resolved the problem and should be able
to browse Flash content successfully. If not, continue..

THEN... if that fails do this:
1. Delete the following files (or the entire folder) if they exist *(again,
and yes I know it's repetitive...)*
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player Enabler.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/flashplayer.xpt

2. Run Disk Utility's "Permission Repair" again..

3. Install FP9 as root:
a. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
b. CAREFULLY type the following line, exactly as you see it here (there is a
space after cd):
for intel macs: cd /Volumes/"Adobe Flash Player 9"/"Install Flash Player 9
UB.app"/Contents/MacOS\
for powerPC macs: cd /Volumes/"Adobe Flash Player 9"/"Install Flash Player 9
OSX"/Contents/MacOSClassic

c. CAREFULLY type the following line (there is a space after sudo):
for intel macs: sudo "./Install Flash Player 9 UB"
for powerPC macs: sudo "./Install Flash Player 9 OSX"

Technote versions of these instructions are available in:

If you are getting the following error,

Error "creating file: 1008:5, -5000 Access Denied Error"

try the following:

Uninstall Flash Player, and run the Mac OS X Disk Utility to repair disk
permissions.

Run the Mac OS X Flash Player Uninstaller. Find the uninstaller and
instructions in TechNote tn_14157, "How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player
plug-in and ActiveX control."

http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157 -

Run the Mac OS X Disk Permission repair application.
Select Applications, Utilities, and Disk Utility and select ?Repair Disk
Permissions?.

Reinstall Flash Player. For instructions, visit the Flash Player Download
Center on the Adobe website at

www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

man, I've tried this like a hundred times over the past 3 weeks. I can get it
to work in a second login account but it doesn't help me. All my files,
preferences, bookmarks etc are on my main log in....

seriously, this is getting ridiculous.

Does not work for me either.
I have never had this problem with any other installer.

:disgust; I was wondering how long it would take Adobe to start messing up all
the wonderful Macromedia products after they bought them out. I can't believe
the FTC wasn't all over that deal. Well It seems like they are well on their
way to doing just that, destroying everything that was wonderful about
Macromedia's products. I have tried all of the suggested fixes in this thread
my disk permissions are repaired as can be. I don't have any of the files
hanging around in the /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ directory, yet can't get it
to install. When I try to run the graphical installer it installs just fine
and then gets to a point where It hangs displaying the wonderful sideways blue
and white barbershop pole. Above the pole it says "Items remaining to be
installed: 4" below the bar is simply states "Searching: Macintosh HD" I have
tried dropping down to the terminal and installing it from command line as
root. There I run into the problem that the "Install Flash Player 9 OSX" is
not a command. Well if it isn't a command then what the heck is it? Is it
some mystery magic file that Adobe expects to transform into an installer if we
don't make it home before the clock strikes midnight... I used to love
installing software on my Mac because it used to be simple. I would just drag
and drop the app directory where it needed to go (usually Applications...duh)
Now everyone is using these crazy package managers... eg. vise. Why not just
give me the stinking binaries and tell me where to put them. Do the developers
think we are so stupid we can't properly drag and drop a folder into another
folder??? GRRR..... this has been a real unnecessary headache!
