asp.net : Option Strict....

Is it required to keep Option Explicit statement when Option Strict
statement is used ?

Best Practices would dictate that both are turned on.

I just tried and it doesnt' seems to be required.
However, it looks to me a bit weird to require type safety without requiring
variable declarations...
