FTP Stopped working

FTP Stopped working steveevets

iis ftp:
FTP has stopped working on a win 2003 server.
I can get it to work again by uninstalling it then reinstalling it.
I can set it up once for anonymous access only/listed IPs only. It then
works fine, but if I make changes to the configuration, eg add a new allowd
IP, when I try to access it (through IE 6) it demands a logon (despite
anonymous access only).
It then refuses to accept anonymous logon, or any valid account.
To restore access I then need to uninstall/reinstall it.

No I cannot get through using ftp.exe
I get

Connected to www.somename.co.uk
530 Connection refused, unknown IP address
User (www.somename.co.uk:(none)):

This is with accept all IP addresses set & allow only anonymous connections.
No log entries are produced, infact no log file has been produced for today
for the ftp service.

Steve

Hi Thanks for the reply.

I pointed out that this was with no IP address restrictions.
This is the way the FTP server is responding... as if it is still blocking
IPs even when I have told it not to.

This has been a repeatable phenomena on two machines, but I think that it
might have been caused by security patch installation. This is just a
feeling, because I don't use FTP very often. It was working fine for 6 months
on three machines.
It went wrong sometime after I installed the following patches
KB824151
KB840987
KB841356
KB885881
KB834707

Putting the latest patches
KB885836
KB885835
on the machines one by one with an uninstall/reinstall of FTP seems to have
fixed the problem.

Seems unlikely, but as I say the problem suddenly appeared on each machine
after I changed the list of allowed IPs.
The problem was repeatable.
The problem has now gone away.

If you have any thoughts on this I'd love to know them, otherwise thanks for
your time.

Regards

Steve

Well, according to the response. the IP is not accepted.
I would suggest you remove all IP restriction, then try to connect again,
check the ftp log file of the connected client's IP address. then recreate
the IP restriction and exclude that client ip address.

I cannot test futher because all available machines are no longer showing the
symptoms.
I don't know what caused it, but it was repeatable.
FTP is now working fine.
I am confident that it was not a firewall/ipsec/port filtering problem
because these things were not changed.
I'm going to have to drop it now that it has gone away because I have not
got the machines available to try & get the problem to come back.

Thanks for your time.

Steve

I have not see this related to any security patches. Do you have any
firewall in place ? ISA ?
how many ftp sites you have ? when the connection is block by IP
restriction, it will not be logged in the ftp log file. (i think this is
just wrong :), how would I know that there are someone trying to connect if
it's not logged?)

let's try again. once you have temporary disabled all IP restriction list.
restart ftp service. then try to connect via ftp.exe again.

:) mm.... maybe the IP restriction wasn't 'refreshed' at the time you
test...
