iis ftp : home FTP with ISS - works only sometimes

I have set up an ftp site on my home computer (using ISS) and I'm
quite sure I have done everything right. I know this because sometimes
it works, but other times for no apparent reason it doesn't. I try to
connect to the ftp on my browser and it simply shows an animation that
it is searching for the folder, when it is finished I get an error
saying "An error occurred opening the folder on the FTP server. Make
sure you have permission to access this folder. Details: the
connection with the server was reset." the files are not shown
(everything is set to be read anonymously) but what is odd is that my
welcome message is still displayed. Why is it that this happens? It
can fine the welcome message but is unable to find the files I have on
the FTP. What should I do? Oh, and why does it work sometimes without
changing a thing?

That makes sense. It seems now (after I played around with it) that
the problem only occurs when I try to log on to the FTP with the

The difference between when it works and when it doesn't is that
something *has* changed. It could be your connection, it could be the
account you're actually using versus what you think you're using or
any number of changes.

To test, use the command line FTP instead of Explorer so you can see
the return codes. Explorer hides those. Also check the FTP log file
and see what got logged, you may never be getting to the FTP site if a
networking issue is the problem.

Sure. Most likely an issue with routing or name resolution. Try a
networking group for help in daignosing those, and try a command line
FTP to 127.0.0.1 or the IP of the machine to check name resolution.

Check, also, what IP address you've bound the server to. If it's "All
Unassigned", then you will be able to connect to the server from itself
using any name or IP address that resolves to the same machine. If it's a
single IP address, then you will need to connect to that IP address, and
localhost or 127.0.0.1 won't work.
