Uggh:Linksys router, Windows 2003 server, Passive FTP connection problems HELP? Gary
6/26/2004 5:46:40 PM
iis ftp: Oh please, where do I begin? OK-I am an internet dilettante, so maybe you
folks can help me out! I need to configure my system so that people can
access my FTP site from within a web browser, which I haven't been able to
achieve. I am running Windows 2003 Server off of an old PIII 800 MHz
machine, behind a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. I have another PC on the
router as well for surfing the net. So, I have set up the router for port
forwarding of 20 and 21, as well as enabling ports 5100-5700 for passive
connections, and have as well configured 2003 server with an FTP site
through the IIS Manager. I have even done a registry edit from Microsoft to
free up ports above 5000-here is the official link.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;196271 .In addition,
I have enabled UPnP forwarding on the router and enabled HTTP and FTP
settings to go to my server's local IP. I have a dynamic IP from Time Warner
cable, and I have a program from no-ip.com to update my DNS info-both for my
website which I host as well(which works fine) as for the ftp site.. OK.I
can access the FTP site through an FTP client like cute ftp, but only using
a PORT setting-I can upload and download no problem. Passive connections
seem to get kicked off. People have been ULing and DLing successfully so far
in PORT mode only. When I try to log in to the FTP through any web browser,
a username/password box pops up, I enter the U/P that I set up(with
permissions) and I get a message "426 Connection closed; transfer aborted".
When I look at IIS current sessions, it shows I am logged in for a couple of
seconds before I'm kicked out. Is there a problem in getting web-based ftp
connections due to a passive issue? Maybe one of you folks can straighten
this mess out before I lose my hair! I am getting to hate Linksys and Win2K3
Server!

THANKS IN ADVANCE

feel free to respond to my email address..thx

Gary,

You also need to configure the passive port range in IIS to mirror
that set on your router. This article explains how :

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=555022

Alternatively, if you don't wish to support passive connections you
can configure Internet Explorer to use PORT mode. This KB article
explains how to do this :

HOW TO: Configure Internet Explorer to Use Both the FTP PORT Mode and
PASV Mode in Windows 2000

Yes - your router isn't correctly translating the IP address in the PASV
response. Notice that the internal IP address is listed in the "STATUS"
line, and the PASV response (the line starting with "227").

This is a problem with your NAT router - any device that does NAT for FTP
_must_ translate the IP address and port from internal numbers to external
numbers. Contact your router's manufacturer for support in getting their
FTP Application Level Gateway to work correctly.

Gary,

If you can get CuteFTP to work in PORT mode you should be able to get
IE to work also. Follow the instructions this KB article :

PASV Mode in Windows 2000

No, it's not, but let's go with it for right now - what happens when
CuteFTP is used in PASV mode? Please, include any error message text from
the log window of CuteFTP.

I have Ports 5100-5700 open on the router and I did the passiveportrange
maneuver at the dosprompt. so those settings match. ports 20 & 21 are
forwaded and enabled on the router. I did a port scan from a free online
website www.grc.com and it said that port 21 was open, but 20 was closed.
And none of the ports 5100-5700 that were tested were seen to be open
either. I dont know what to think at this point. Any ideas?

Okay, so what did the Linksys forums have to say? Really, it looks like the
problem is entirely that the Linksys router isn't translating the PASV
response in the way it should. You're running the FTP server on port 21, so
it has no reason not to treat this as an FTP connection, and its FTP ALG
(Application Level Gateway) should be kicking in. IIS is doing what it
should. This newsgroup contains a group of people who know a lot about
IIS - Linksys is not necessarily a major strength of anyone here.

On a personal note, I've used a Linksys router (BEFSR41), and it worked fine
for me, as long as I used unencrypted FTP, on port 21 internal and port 21
external. It was a little flakey until I upgraded its firmware. I don't
know if that is helpful.

What did Linksys have to say when you called them for support?

Cool Alun. Thanks for the opinion!

People are grumbling about Linsys issues with NAT in this area...
