You don't configure the FTP service in the Default Web Site. When you
expand Internet Information Services in the Management console do you
see a folder called FTP Sites ? Under Services in the MMC do you see a
service called FTP Publishing ? Try typing net stop msftpsvc at a
command prompt and see what the result is.

It sounds like you haven't actually installed the FTP service. You
need to install it if you haven't done so already.

I have WindowsXP pro, I have IIS installed and running (I could go on
http://localhost and get IIS help)

I can't figure where to view/configurelauch my FTP server.

So far I launch the IIS console, right clic -> proeprty on my default web
site, then I have 9 tabs:
HTTP headers, Custom Errors, ASP.NET, Server Extensions, Wb Site, ISAPI
Filters, Home Directory, Document, Directory Security
none of them has any FTP button.

Arrgghhh... HEEEEEEEELLP!!! how do I setup my FTP ?!

I try in the DOS console: 'ftp myIp'
and get:

I found it.
The FTP server is an optional component of IIS.
It was not installed!

Hey I'm having problems with ftp too and I don't see FTP publishing in the
ISS management console.

btw my specific problem is that even though I've set up my ftp to login
only anonymous users I'm prompted for a username and password, and my
login is always rejected.

"FTP Publishing" isn't something that would ever appear in an IIS
console, though I don't know what an "ISS" console might have.

It's configured incorrectly then. We might be able to suggest a
solution, but we don't even know what version of IIS/Windows you're
running.

whether I login with ftp://ipaddress or ftp://username:password@address
dialog box pops up prompting password and username (even if I have it set
to only allow anonymous logins.)

-when I attempt to login anonymously "either the server does not allow
anonymous logins or the email address was not accepted."
-when I attempt to login under my username I get "could not login to ftp
server with the user name and password specified."

I have zonealarm pro set to allow ftp to have access to the internet and
to act as a server. I also have zonealarm pro set to allow incoming tcp
port 21

I got it to work, tested it out by downloading a file and then all of a
sudden it stopped working again with the same problems.

Still doesn't help. What *actual* error message do you get when you
try to log in ?

But what is the *exact* error you get?

thanks but I already did that stuff. A better description of my problem
is:

whether I login with ftp://ipaddress or ftp://username:password@[EMAIL
PROTECTED]
box pops up prompting password and username (even if I have it set
to only allow anonymous logins.)

-when I attempt to login anonymously "either the server does not allow
anonymous logins or the email address was not accepted."
-when I attempt to login under my username I get "could not login to ftp
server with the user name and password specified."

Test without ZoneAlarm, and using the command line from the server
itself. Report the exact messages, exactly as you see them.

go on settings -> control panel -> add or remove program -> add windows
component

you will see IIS has subsection
FTP is not checked (and not installed) by default when IIS is installed !!!!

Check the FTP server, install it, and here you go !

have you try with the command line?
you have better control and feeback.

launch the commande shell

ftp://ipaddress

then it will ask user / pwd
anonymous
someone@somewhere.com

see what happened ..

The command is "ftp ip-address". If you enter "ftp://ipaddress" at the
command line, you get "'ftp:' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file."
