After applying patch MS04-021(841373), my FTP virtual
directories no longer work. It's giving me an access
denied in the status field. Event log records it as a
Event ID 101 error. I cannot find any documentation to
explain how to resolve this. I'm running Windows NT 4.0,

The FTP log didn't seem to record the issue but here is
the event log details; "The server was unable to add the
virtual root '/pcommon' for the directory 'D:\Personal
Shares' due to the following error: Access is denied. The
data is the error code".

Can you tell what the problem is based on this message?
If not I can give what ftp logs were created at the time
although they don't say much.

What are the actual NTFS permissions on the underlying physical
directory that /pcommon maps to ?

The directory contains the "Domain Admin" group and two
user groups. I've applied the "System" account to the
directory, but still I see the "stop" sign with the
word "error" in it. To alleviate the problem I've removed
the MS04-021 patch. Even though we can now see the
virtual directory "pcommon" and have access to all the
subdirectories, the stop sign is still there.

I need to reapply this patch without it denying us access.
Any thoughts anyone has is appreciated.

No really, now, get Filemon from sysinternals.com
close IIS mmc, run Filemon open IIS mmc,
navigate to the path... still see the 'stop' sign ?

then stop filemon, check for any access denied entry.

is drive D a local drive or mapped drive ?

have you check with this kb ?
