Anyone got Win XP ftp server working? JethroUK©

iis ftp:
I dont seem to be having much luck

I can access as anonymous login - but obviously i would like user/pass
protection

In username it has something like "IUSR_MyPc" as per here:

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1491&page=4

This article seems to skate the issue too ( i expect it's more complicated
than it seems)

If i change it to "username" & "password" - it doesn't let me login - it
does issue user/pass prompt, which implies the ftp server has recieved
connection, but it wont let me in.

make sure you have the right ports open in your firewall. blocking one of
the two ports ftp uses by default can give you problems like that, it will
seem to log you in but then you can't transfer any data.

Really dumb question: How can I identify the ports, to
open them? And then how do I open them? I'm having a
similar problem -- recently installed XP SP2, now I can't
access my web host's FTP server. I "appear" to be able to
log in, but it isn't letting me upload any files. My tech
skills are only marginal (and the MS help docs for this
issue make NO sense to me), so if someone could hand-hold
me through resolving the problem, I'd be eternally
grateful.

[By the way, I'm also running Zone Alarm -- that may make
a difference too, but I didn't have problems until I
installed SP2]

Replying to my own post... Problem solved. Of course it
was a simple solution -- unchecking the "Use passive FTP"
setting in Internet Options. Duh. Wish I had figured that
out this morning, but at least I can upload my web pages
now.

Thanks anyway. :]

JethroUK,

The instructions in this KB article for W2K should work for XP :

HOW TO: Create a Secure FTP Directory that Uses Password
Authentication

the default ports are 21 and 20. 21 makes the initial connection then 20 is
used to transfer data.
